Roy Lichtenstein:
Landscapes in the Chinese Style March 19 - July 6, 1997, Foster Gallery
by Barbara Stern Shapiro
Lichtenstein notes that his recent series Landscapes in the Chinese Style was first inspired by a 1994 exhibition of splendid landscape monotypes and pastels by Edgar Degas. These, in turn, stimulated his interest in lyrical and atmospheric Chinese mountain scenes, which he studied in the color reproductions of art books. His familiar technique is evident in this new body of work, but the color range is spare and mostly subdued; nevertheless, bold accents anchor the monumental compositions and amuse us with their anecdotal details of small boats, bridges, and twisted trees or strategically placed philosophers and scholars.
Barbara Stern Shapiro curated the exhibition.

Roy Lichtenstein

From his first collaboration with Gemini in 1969, Lichtenstein generally worked in series there, exploring variations on a single theme such as in his Cathedral Series (31.1 - 31.8). Sources for both his prints and sculpture are found in commercial art and in modernist traditions, including cubism ( Modern Head #1 [31.23]) and expressionism ( Head [31.72]). Transformed by Lichtenstein, images from fine and commercial art sources coexist, redefining the sources from which art derives. Flattened, schematic forms, dots and stripes, and bright, rich colors are all essential to Lichtenstein's visual effects. His earlier prints, such as the Bull Profile Series (31.44 - 31.49), depended in large measure upon mechanical printmaking methods that yielded flat, unmodulated surfaces. Lichtenstein later explored different techniques and materials: in lithography, he drew directly onto plates and stones; he also explored the woodcut, a process that offers distinctively rich surface effects. For his Expressionist Woodcuts (31.62 - 31.75) and the wood blocks for his "Paintings" Series (31.76 - 31.83), the artist carved all of the essential edges that delineated form while the workshop staff cleared away more generalized areas. During his long relationship with Gemini, Lichtenstein developed increasingly

IMPORTANT WORKS BY LICHTENSTEIN, MARTIN, AND DE KOONING ARE LATEST GIFTS TO NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART FROM PREEMINENT COLLECTORS ROBERT AND JANE MEYERHOFF;
GIFTS SINCE 1986 HAVE TRANSFORMED POSTWAR COLLECTION
Washington, DC The latest gifts of leading art collectors Robert and Jane Meyerhoff to the National Gallery of Art are three significant 20th-century works by major artists: Girl with Beach Ball III , a 1977 homage to Picasso and 1930s surrealism by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997); Field #2 , a 1963 classic grid painting by Agnes Martin (b.1912); and Two Women , 1952, an experimental and exploratory charcoal by Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) of one of his most prevalent subjects. This brings to 42* the total number of works given to the Gallery by the Meyerhoffs since 1986, works that have transformed the shape of the Gallery's postwar art collection. "Through their remarkable acuity, exhaustive study, and close relationships with the artists, the Meyerhoffs have amassed one of the world's most outstanding collections of postwar art, primarily American, including an unsurpassed collection of works by modern masters Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Brice Marden," said Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art. "Their connoisseurship and generosity continue to help the Gallery build a superb contemporary collection, an effort that gained momentum with the construction of the East Building in the late 1970s."

REMEMBERING ROY LICHTENSTEIN
SEPTEMBER 30, 1997
NEWSHOUR TRANSCRIPT Paul Richard, art critic for the Washington Post , and Phil Ponce take a look at the life of Roy Lichtenstein who died this week. PHIL PONCE: Roy Lichtenstein, one of the originators of pop art, died yesterday at age 73. He rose to prominence in the 1960's by making art based on cartoons. And whether the images were of romance or war, his works often parodied and poked fun at American life. Paul Richard is the art critic for the "Washington Post." He joins us now for a look at the artist and his work. Welcome, Mr. Richard. First of all, why was Roy Lichtenstein considered an important artist? PAUL RICHARD, Washington Post: Oh, he was a lovable artist, and he left a very strong imprint on 35 years of American painting and American pop culture. And he took elements of pop culture that were really not at all a part of the world ofhigh world of painting and brought them together. PHIL PONCE: So what did he do that hadn’t been done before when you talk about making new elements of pop culture, what do you mean? PAUL RICHARD: He took images that had no esthetic content. You could open a romance magazine if you were a teenage girl or a war comic if you were a teenage boy, or flip through the ads in the back of a New York tabloid and see images that your eye would just skip over. He took these images, copied them, at first rather crudely, but then with fabulous elegance, and made these images deserving of being scanned or attention paid to them equal to the art in museums. And he really broadened what we saw as and thought of as art.

You probably know the story. Art today is all, well, a rush need shock tactics. How else can they go right for fame and find it? Irony rules, and the art world, that hoary institution, looks more settled, elegant, and downright trendy than ever. Of course, you should know the story. It comes as part of the sales pitch. It also allows backward-looking critics like me to complain how everything is going downhill, just as we look eagerly for the latest and trendiest successor. Something remarkable happened this fall. The story came true without my complaining. The master of postmodern irony, Gerhard Richter , retraced his own career, and Roy Lichtenstein took up his cartoons and pretend brushstrokes. Yet one would have missed plenty in seeing only pat answers. Lichtenstein and Richter show how much beside irony they put in. Together, they offer a look back at four decades and their complex interaction.
Postmodernism's heated pool
Gerhard Richter has a decided virtuosity, the skill of an artist equally at home in photorealism and abstraction. He can comment on painting as well as a high formalist, but from a distance that any postmodernist would envy. His use of color, clarity, and gesture has in turn influenced even a photographer like

ZANIMLJIVO
