(Polchinok, 1890 – Schodnia, 1941) Russian painter and printmaker, considered as one of the most famous of the Russian abstract artists. An important collaborator with Chagall, El Lisstizky was the professor of architecture and graphic art at the art school in Vitebsk, where Chagall served as the head. He was also influenced by Malevich, a keen advocator of pure geometric forms in art. An example of his abstract paintings is the series Proun (Guggenheim Museum), which he referred to as ‘the interchange station between architecture and painting’. Elizar Morduchivitch Lissitzky was born on November 23 1890 in a village Pochinok several miles southeast of Smolensk into a well-to-do Jewish family. He spent his childhood in Vitebsk, and in his secondary school days he lived with his grandparents in Smolensk. His father was a westernized Jew with the ideals typical of the turn-of-the-century assimilated Jews : He acquired his place in the society by accepting a secular job, and as soon as he had enough money, he emigrated to the United States and asked his wife to join him. Lissitzky's mother was much more orthodox than his father, and first she went to ask the rabbi for advice, and he told her to stay. So the father came back, and El grew up in Russia. His wife Sophie Küppers wrote that he inherited traits of both his parents; actually, Lissitzky's identity consisted of many different parts, and the Eastern Jewish tradition contributed to a certain extent to this conglomerate. Another flash piece, done by the Getty Museum a few years ago, contains a chronology that showcases the work of El Lissitzky and the highlights of his life. The overall site goes into rich detail about his work and has tons of examples, that popup to larger details. In this particular case, it seems like the site could have been done in HTML just as easily. Nothing that I can see, makes flash a better choice - unlike some of the other museum sites I have commented on in the past. Technology aside, this is a a great way to get an overview of El Lissitzky and his work and see how it was a product of the times and geography. Lissitzky was a master of communication and information organization. He was skilled across multiple media and his design work feels as fresh and lively today as it was during his life.

El Lissitzky: From Two Quadrants This book is a facsimile of the original Russian 1st edition, which was published in 1922. A masterpiece of ideological simplicity it presents El Lissitzky's political-didactic attempt to teach children mathematics using a puzzle in which the red square always overcomes the black.
This is where modern typography began. Lissitzky's playful approach attracted the eye and made the viewer want to read.
As Max Bill commented, typography is a game that leads to communication, and it all began with Lissitzky's tale of two squares. 20 pages, Paperback, 8 1/2'' 11'' (280 x 220 mm)

EL LISSITZKY:
A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO MODERN ART Lazar Lissitzky called El (1890-1941) worked as a painter, typographer, architect and designer. Lissitzky grew up in Vitebsk, the hometown of Chagall , and studied architecture in the Polytechnic school in Darmstadt between 1909 and 1914. He then went to Moscow where he began to work as an architect. He also began to illustrate Jewish books for children in 1917, at first in a style influenced by Chagall and produced popular prints as well. In 1919 he was appointed professor of architecture and applied art at the art school in Vitebsk, where Malevich was a colleague, and collaborated with him in the Unovis group. He began to make abstract pictures, which he called Prouns, as the interchange station between painting and architecture. Lissitzky was sent to Berlin in 1921 to establish contacts between artists in the USSR and Germany. There he met Schwitters, Moholy-Nagy, van Doesburg and many others, and has his first one-man exhibition at the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover, in 1923. He also designed books and periodicals with radical innovations in typography and photomontage. Lissitzky went to Switzerland in 1924 and returned to Moscow a year later. He then devoted himself to designing, periodicals and exhibition displays, including an exhibition room for the Landesmuseum, Hanover, and the Soviet pavilions for several international exhibitions. His works, mostly gouaches are now worth between US $ 15,000 and 150,000.

He pursued architectural studies at the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt, Germany, from 1909 to 1914, when the outbreak of World War I precipitated his return to Russia. In 1916, he received a diploma in engineering and architecture from the Riga Technological University. Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich were invited by Marc Chagall Pro dva kvadrata. The following year, he taught at Vkhutemas with Vladimir Tatlin and joined the Constructivist group. The Constructivists exhibited at the Erste russische Kunstausstellung designed by Lissitzky at the Galerie van Diemen in Berlin in 1922. During this period he collaborated with Ilya Ehrenburg on the journal Veshch/Gegenstand/Objet. In 1923, the artist experimented with new typographic design for a book by Vladimir Mayakovski, Dlya golosa, and visited Hannover, where his work was shown under the auspices of the Kestner-Gesellschaft. Also in 1923, Lissitzky created his Proun environment for the

El (Elizar or Lazar or Eliezer) Marcovich Lissitzky was a designer, typographer, artist, photographer, architect, and teacher (among other jobs). He had a great influence on the design work from the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements, and on modern commercial art and design. Here we present in full one of his great books, as well as other examples of his work in various media. In addition, we present art from other Suprematist painters, especially Kasimir Malevich.

View book by pages with graphic browser. About 2 Squares is a short picture book for children. It is also one of the most powerful expressions of revolutionary Communism and modern art. It deserves close and careful examination as we embark on a similar revolution from text on paper to electronic cyberspace.
  • [A Note on the Text] At the end we adduce a note on the printed text. The following pages are each comprised of a JPEG file with the original illustrations and text, in Cyrillic characters of the Russian language. An approximate English translation is given in the following notes, which serve also as a sort of text description for the blind and those of us who look but do not see. Remarks draw heavily on Railing's excellent notes in the MIT Press edition (see below). Instructions:

El Lissitzky’s contribution to the abstract art of the twenties is well known and has been analysed in a whole series of articles, books and catalogues. Yet his experiments in the fields of photography, photomontage, graphic design and exhibitions in the late twenties and the thirties still give grounds for controversy among specialists and are practically unknown to a wider public. With the title El Lissitzky: Beyond the Abstract Cabinet, 1930-1941, this exhibition brings together Lissitzky’s multimedia works, with examples ranging from 1920 (when Lissitzky started designing the Abstract Cabinet) to 1941 (when he died in Moscow), devoting particular attention to his intense collaboration with German and Soviet photographers, designers and cinema producers, and the influence they had on his body of work. A prominent feature of this exhibition is the fact that many of the works will be going on show outside Russia for the first time.
