Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) Laurence Stephen Lowry is one of the most popular British artists of the twentieth century, best known for his atmospheric urban and industrial landscapes. Born in Stretford, Manchester, Lowry enjoyed drawing as a boy, but it was not until he started work as a clerk that he was able to afford drawing lessons. His early drawings from life reveal an accomplished and academic draughtsman..a far cry from the more stylized figures of his later years. Working as a rent collector, Lowry got to know the poorer districts of Manchester. The mill, the terraced streets and their inhabitants provide the subject matter of some of his most famous works. "I'll always be grateful to rent collection, I've put many of the tenants in my pictures". It was not until the 1930's that Lowry achieved any kind of commercial success. Lowry's father died in 1932. His mother, to whom he was extremely close, died in 1939. He later said "I have never felt much interest in life since then". (Above) is a picture of Lowry doing what he liked to do best, painting another scene from his life.

'Lawrence Stephen Lowry' Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Old Trafford, Manchester (UK), on November 1st, 1887. He moved to Pendlebury in Salford with his parents in 1909, where he was to live for nearly 40 years. Despite the inexorable link between Lowry and working class life, he did not grow up in poverty. He had few friends at school and passed no exams, but it was decided that he should enrol at Manchester School of Art which he did in 1905, for evening classes. He joined Salford School of Art for evening classes in 1915, which is where his work on the matchstick figures developed. He had his first job in 1904 where he 'drifted into' office work as a clerk with a Manchester accountant. In 1910 Lowry took a job with a property company in Manchester as a rent collector, and stayed with them for the next 42 years. He spent much of his working life walking the poorest streets of Manchester and its surrounding area, and this is where his vision formed. 'Coming from the Mill' Lowry first exhibited in 1919 at Manchester Art Gallery. By 1945 Lowry had had 3 exhibitions and was starting to establish himself. By the 1950s the Royal Academy had invited him to join and his fame and success were assured.

Biography Laurence Stephen Lowry Lowry's extraordinary standing and popularity owe everything to his reputation as an urban realist, a painter of mill towns populated with a myriad of 'stick' figures. In truth, for more than a third of his career he had left the urban scenes behind and turned to more solitary subjects, reflecting perhaps his own loneliness. Lowry was born in Manchester to relatively prosperous parents, who in 1909, moved to the industrial district of Pendlebury. He studied at Manchester and Salford Schools of Art until 1928, while working as a clearly very sympathetic rent collector, one of Lowry's teachers being Adolphe Valette. From 1932 Lowry exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and in 1934 was elected R.B.A. The year 1939 saw his first one-man exhibition and sadly the death of his mother with whom he had lived, his father having died in 1932. Lowry stayed in Pendlebury until 1948, then moved to Mottram in Longdendale Cheshire, which from all accounts he disliked, and where he died in 1976. Lowry was belatedly elected A.R.A. in 1955 and R.A. in 1962. Lowry was perhaps surprisingly, a great admirer of the Pre-Raphaelites, he owned works by Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, and works by Lucien Freud. His early work owes something to an anglicized form of impressionism, while his industrial scenes, far from being naive or primitive, show careful observation and character, the work of an artist who studied at art school a considerable time. Without question Lowry is a unique artist, his works a product of his environment and character, one of the great names in twentieth century British art.
