Reward offered over stolen Lowrys
LS Lowry was famous for his matchstick figures
A "substantial" reward has been offered after thieves stole five paintings by LS Lowry in a haul worth more than a million pounds from a private collection. The Lowry works - valued at up to £250,000 each - were among a collection of some 59 paintings taken two weeks ago from premises in Northamptonshire where they were being stored by their owner. Lowry: Many paintings based on Salford life Auction houses around Europe and Interpol have been alerted and advertisements have been placed in antique trade publications to warn dealers. And a reward - believed to be a five-figure sum - has been offered to help recover the artworks. The owner of the paintings has asked for no publicity. The stolen Lowry paintings are Gateposts in the Snow, The Chapel, A Cornershop, People on a Promenade and Street Scene.

Lowry's Going to the Match: Sold to the FA
Laurence Stephen Lowry died wondering if his work would ever be remembered - today he is considered one of Britain's greatest artists. An only child, his father was an estate agent and his mother a talented musician and he had a comfortable, happy childhood. He started painting classes at the age of 16 and later studied during the evening at the Manchester Regional College of Art.
Lowry: Debt collector by day
Now his work is being celebrated at a new £96m museum in his birthplace of Salford, Greater Manchester. It was during his 20s that he was introduced to painters of the local industrial scene and began studying the work of the Impressionists. The two influences were to shape Lowry's work as he became fascinated by mills and the documenting the lives of people who worked in them. He began exhibiting in Manchester during the 1920s - his most characteristic works being bleak industrial cityscapes and towns dotted with matchstick figures.

Closed Shop, Commonside, Crookes, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Although Commonside seems like a quiet little West Sheffield street it's one of the most direct ways to get between Walkley/Crookes/Upperthorpe and the University area of Broomhill. This could be why two pubs grew up directly across the street from each other. The Hallamshire House is an interesting tardigrade of a pub with pretty stained glass windows and details and lots of nice, old, dark wood. With a pool table in the front room, a full-sized snooker table in the back room, and lots of snug rooms and alcoves here and there and everywhere, it feels both cosy and cavernous. There's plenty of space for the three resident dogs: two black Alsatians who pop outside quite a bit and an elderly and quite curmudgeonly female who spends most of her time standing and glaring at the wall. On our first visit our pints of Ruddles Best Bitter (3.7% ABV, Morland PLC, Abingdon, Oxfordshire) were crisp and full and satisfying, just like Ruddles Best should be. Sadly we've had a few disappointing pints here since then, but I think it's simply a matter of turning over the Ruddles. Sometimes your timing is right and sometimes it isn't. The frustrating feature of the Hallamshire House, which seems to be a feature common in a lot of English pubs, is the constant intrusion of television. Why do so many pubs insist on having the TV on all the time? I can see the point for particular sporting events or important news stories. But all the time? Do we really need to have "The Weakest Link" or "EastEnders" foisted upon us when we're out having a pint in an effort to be away from home and our housemates or family members who are probably sprawled in the lounge watching "The Weakest Link" or "EastEnders"? Is there no escape?

“He painted matchstalk

Who did? The line above is from a song which you may have heard about a painter called L S Lowry. The L S stands for Laurence Stephen, but he is usually just talked about as Lowry. Lowry was born in 1887 and died in 1976. He was a painter from Manchester who became famous for his pictures of towns in the north of England. The ‘matchstalk men’ of the song are the people in his paintings. Why is Lowry in the news? Because a new arts centre named after him has just opened in Salford, Greater Manchester. It cost more then £100 million to build, and will house the world's largest collection of Lowry's paintings. The centre is simply called The Lowry, and it has been built on the Manchester Ship Canal on Salford Quays. People hope it will bring jobs and people into the area, as Salford is one of the poorest cities in the UK. For more information about the museum and what it will offer, see the

laurence stephen lowry (1887 1976) is best known for his depiction of pre-warnorthern England, at a time when heavy industry was still its most prominent
http://www.garnerinternational.com/home/idtext.html
Garner International's identity features elements from a collection of paintings by English artist L. S. Lowry. Lowry epitomises 'working Britain' and more than any other artist has managed to capture living and working in the urban landscapes of Northern England. This he does with charm, wit, and a gritty realism. Andrew Garner, founder and chairman of Garner International, grew up near the area on which Lowry concentrated, and therefore has a strong personal affinity with Lowry. Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887 - 1976) is best known for his depiction of pre-war northern England, at a time when heavy industry was still its most prominent feature. Living and working in Manchester, he identified closely with the people he met every day. His trademark was his use of beguilingly simple 'matchstick men', who always exude a humanity which makes them stand out from their stark backdrop of factories and mills. The abstract nature of Lowry's figures makes them instantly recognisable and at the same time means that they can represent a wide range of people. Their use in a new context has achieved a distinctive identity which is unique in the otherwise faceless world of executive search. Lowry has achieved worldwide recognition, and there has been a particular renewal of interest in him at home with the opening of The Lowry galleries in Salford at the end of April this year. The centre's website is on the internet at
