The Lowry Centre
Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887 - 1976) is one of Britain's best known artists and is closely associated with the City of Salford. Born in Manchester, he moved in 1909 with his parents to Pendlebury, Salford where he lived for almost 40 years. He studied at Salford School of Art in the Peel Building which is now home to our Geography Department. The Lowry collection is currently displayed in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery which is directly in front of the Peel Building but will be moved to the purpose built Lowry Centre in 2000. The centre will be part funded by the National Lottery as one of the Millennium landmark projects. The Centre will provide a top class venue for the performing and visual arts as well as a new home for the city's Lowry collection. It will incorporate Britain's first hands-on gallery for children, a state of the art 1650 seat theatre and a 400 seat flexible theatre for community activities. The University of Salford's National Industrial Centre for Virtual Reality and a wide range of other entertainment and visitor attractions will be located on adjacent sites. The centre is being built on the old Number 4 dock at Salford Quays. Formerly this was part of the Manchester docks. The site has been cleared for a few years now and the final go-ahead for the Centre was given in November 1996 after government funding was approved. The impressive waterfront setting completes the transformation of the Salford Quays area. Over the last ten years a massive programme of land use change has seen the construction of office towers, residential property, restaurants and new road layouts.

Lawrence Stephen Lowry
(Sorry! Under Construction!)
British painter, born in Manchester. He worked as a clerk until his retirement at 65, using his spare time for art lessons and paintings. He exhibited regularly in Manchester from the 1920s, when he began his most characteristic works, bleak industrial landscapes and towns dotted with matchstick figures. These first attracted serious attention in the 1940s. A large retrospective exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1976. A Manufacturing Town (1922, oil on panel, Science Museum, London)
It is currently on display at the Museum's Picture's gallery until February 1997. Top of Page Mitsuharu Matsuoka's Home Page

About the Lowry The Lowry art gallery is set in the heart of the regenerated Salford Quays. It is a highly original, distinctive and unusual combination of stainless steel and glass. It has 2 theatres, each with its own unique atmosphere, a Promenade and Galleries. The interior of The Lowry covers an area larger than 5 football pitches. It is located on what once was Pier 8, with the Manchester Ship Canal still lying on two sides of its triangular site. The third side looks out over the newly constructed square. The spectacular Lifting Footbridge across the canal links The Lowry to Trafford Wharfside, Manchester United Football Club and the

Foggy conditions can transform even familiar surroundings beyond recognition and artists have used fog and haze to depict the world around them in new and occasionally unexpected ways. Some, like Victor Pasmore , have used the shrouding effects of fog to reveal the underlying structure of the scene before them. Others, like Whistler , used mist to hide the defects of a landscape, transforming an industrialised view into a beautiful, dream-like vision. Painters from Claude to Monet have responded to the way in which clouds of fog capture and reflect light to stunning visual effect. Artists have also exploited these optical effects for emotional ends: in Millet’s stunning depiction of moonlight through mist the atmosphere fuses man with nature in an almost mystical manner.
