The Tea Rooms of Mackintosh by Alan Crawford and Wendy Kaplan Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh is famous for his tea rooms, and he deserves to be. The Willow Tea Rooms in Sauchiehall Street were among his most original buildings and the most complete in their scheme of decoration and furniture. In the Salon de Luxe, the inner sanctum of the Willow, the waitresses even wore chokers and dresses designed by Mackintosh. If they were still flourishing as tea rooms in their original state, the Willow Tea Rooms would stand beside Glasgow School of Art and the Hill House as one of a trio of Mackintosh masterpieces. And they were only the finest of a dozen or so tea-room interiors that Mackintosh [and his wife and collaborator Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh] worked on between 1896 and 1917. A Unique Building Type Mackintosh was a consummate stylist, and most of the writing about him is concerned with style, and style alone. But his tea rooms, which were spread over most of his career, should also be treated as a specialized building type — the tea room as a place of public refreshment. This article is excerpted from Charles Rennie Mackintosh edited by Wendy Kaplan, with permission of the publisher

Calloway art illustration Aubrey Beardsley >> architect, artist, icon McKean, professor of architecture at the University of Brighton, and photographer Colin Baxter provide an in-depth overview of the Scottish architect, painter, furniture designer, and graphic artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). Scarcely dead before art critics began calling him a pioneer of modernism, the United Kingdom's master of art nouveau, and the last great Victorian architect, Mackintosh's reputation has withstood the test of time. This handsome hardcover coffee-table book amply demonstrates why, with McKean's informed and scholarlybut never dry or boringtext accompanied by more than 200 color photos, including both Baxter's contemporary photographs and many archival images. McKean doesn't aim to simply describe the work, providing the sort of "verbal guide" so often found in such books. Instead he examines the artist's life and work through a primary biographical and critical narrative and a secondary track that focuses pictorially on Mackintosh's various styles.

    A NEW VISION
This page is dedicated to the Glasgow architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The images have been gathered together from the various pages of my other architectural explorations, which have been arranged primarily by location rather than by architects. Charles Rennie Mackintosh Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in 1868 in Parson Street, Townhead, Glasgow, where his Martyrs Public School still stands.
His novel architectural creations in Glasgow were all completed before his 40th birthday. He devoted his later years to interior design, furniture and visual art. Like Mackintosh's architecture, his works of art are unparalleled in their originality.
Glasgow Herald building The very narrow Mitchell Street was the home of the Glasgow Herald building for many years before new publishing practices created a requirement for more modern premises.
The lower floors were used as production space where the newspapers where dispatched from platforms open to the street. The upper floors, which have less of an industrial feel about them, were used for the editorial and commercial side of the operation. When Glasgow was awarded the title "UK city of Architecture 1999", part of the block was intended to serve as a museum of architecture - the Lighthouse, entered from Mitchell Lane. Unfortunately it was not able to open until the end of 1999, after most of the major exhibitions had appeared elsewhere.

    Peripheral Glasgow
    Architects in Action
Glasgow is a large city by both Scottish and British standards and much of its interesting architecture is outwith the city centre.
This page provides a brief tour of some of these buildings, most of which are not too inaccessable to the casual traveller. Peoples Palace, Glasgow Beyond the City Centre and the Merchant City lies Glasgow Green by the banks of the River Clyde. The Peoples Palace Museum stands in the centre of the park.
Glasgow Green was public space on the edges of the earliest city boundary before the city's massive expansion of the 19th and 20th centuries led to the absorbsion the surrounding villages and hamlets.
The Peoples Palace was designed by Glasgow's City Engineer and Surveyor, Alexander.B.MacDonald (left), in his preferred Renaissance style.
As its name suggests it is intended as a popular museum featuring the history and folk culture of Glasgow. The exhibits are unpretentious, as you would expect from a museum devoted to the city's down-to-earth population.
It was opened in 1898 by Lord Rosebery. who had briefly been British Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895.

The Sir Walter Scott connection to Hillhead
"In 1702 the lands of Hillhead were part of great Blythswood Estates. They had been purchased about 1680 by Robert Campbell of Northwoodside, Dean of Guild in Glasgow, second son of Colin Campbell the first Blythswood. Robert's daughter Janet inherited Hillhead at his death in 1694. On her marriage to Thomas Haliburton, advocate, of Dryburgh Abbey, in 1702 she sold Hillhead and Byres of Partick to Andrew Gibson the tenant and removed to her husband's estates in Berwickshire where, in the course of time, she became great-grandmother of Sir Walter Scott by her daughter Barbara marrying Robert Scott." This information is from the historical note in 'A Hillhead Album' by Henry Broughham Morton.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh , the son of a police superintendent, was born in Glasgow in 1868. He was educated at the Allan Glen's School before starting his architectural apprenticeship. He attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and in 1889 joined the firm of Honeymen and Kepple.
Although Mackintosh's architectural output was fairly small he had a considerable influence on European design. Especially popular in Austria and Germany, Mackintosh's work was highly acclaimed when it was shown at the Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900. It was also exhibited in Budapest, Munich, Dresden, Venice and Moscow.
An outstanding exponent of the Art Nouveau style, Mackintosh was responsible for the Glasgow School of Art (1897-99), its library block (1907-09), the Cranston Tearooms and Hill House in Helensburgh. His work, often done with his wife

    Charles Rennie MacKintosh - CRM (1868 - 1928)
Born into a family of eleven children in the Townhead area of Glasgow or as we say here 'Toonheed', his celebrated work only reached worldwide status after his death. People only realising later what this genius ideas and designs had actually done for Glasgow and it's future.
Did you know that he has 11 celebrated main architectural sites in Glasgow ? with the addition of commissioned work which is not open to the public. The first is of a main door and entrance hallway in one of the main squares of Glasgow - Blythswood Square. It was inserted in 1909 about 10 years after Blythswood Square was completed. If you go to the square, take a look at all the main doorways, I'm sure if you know your stuff you should be able to recognise his work. If not drop me a line and I'll tell you!
More of his commissions can be found in Glasgow. Another example, Craigie House (1872) is a private residence, currently office space at 6 Rowan Road, Bellahouston Park. This area is know as Dumbreck. In 1892 The Glasgow Firm, "Honeyman and Keppie", entrusted their young architect, John Keppie with a series of alterations to the entrance and library but it is believed judging by the wood carvings it is seen as Charles Rennie MacKintosh's work, at this time he was the architects assistant!.
An original mural by MacKintosh can also be found inside the premises at 91 Buchannan Street, which was the Clydesdale Bank (1896) and the building was originally designed as a Tearoom.
