REES, MARTIN JOHN
mjr@ast.cam.ac.uk
Theoretical astrophysicist Astronomer Royal and Royal Society Research Professor and former director of the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. He has modeled quasars and has made important contributions to the theories of galaxy formation, galaxy clustering, and the origin of the cosmic background radiation. His early study of the distribution of quasars helped discredit the steady state cosmological theory. He was one of the first to propose that enormous black holes power the quasars. He has investigated the anthropic principle, the idea that we find the universe the way it is because if it were much different we would not be here to examine it, and the question of whether ours is one of a multitude of "universes". He is the author of several books including Before the Beginning : Our Universe and Others and Just Six Numbers : The Deep Forces that Shape the Universe . Awards :
- Peter Gruber Foundation, Cosmology Prize, 2001.
- American Astronomical Society, High-Energy Astrophysics Division, Rossi Prize, 2000.

Martin was born on April 9, 1889, in Philadelphia and moved with his parents to St. Paul, then on to Roscoe, Minnesota. Upon completion of the eighth grade, he took a normal training course and began teaching in rural schools in Stearns County. Continuing his education through correspondence courses and summer school, he eventually became Superintendent of Schools in Walnut Grove and Norwood, Minnesota. While teaching at Box Elder Grove School, near Spring Hill, Martin met and married Rose Mary Miller , daughter of Mathias Miller and Juliana Lentsch. Rose was born at Spring Hill on September 30, 1889. Their marriage took place at Lake Henry, Minnesota, on August 28, 1912. Their children are Esther Bert , and Betty After 31 years of teaching and administration, Martin retired at the age of 49. Never one to remain idle, he sought other employment, chiefly with the National Youth Administration and the Minneapolis Municipal Court. In 1958, Martin and Rose built a home in Paynesville. Martin died on June 30, 1960, in the Paynesville Hospital. Rose died in the same hospital on April 4, 1966. They are buried together in the Paynesville cemetery.

Colourful nasturtiums used to grow wild in my garden when I was a bachelor but I swear I never ate them.
My memory of them came flashing back today when my wife Katherine came home from her parents' place with a bag of mystery ingredients.

I am writing to complain about your horoscope last weekend. At no point did it warn me I am likely to witness a big war soon.
I am a Taurus.
But I also note that innocent people under the star signs of Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pieces, Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo similarly were not warned. Why I have an ironing deficiency

Draeger
Home Martin John DRAEGER John ) was born 12 JUN 1874 in Germany. He died 1 MAY 1939 in Madison, Dane, Wisconsin and was buried in Mound Cemetery, Racine, Racine, Wisconsin. He married Marie C. STEIMLE , prob. bet. June 12, 1896 and Nov. 14, 1896, daughter of Lucas STEIMLE and Anna Marie WOLFINGER . She was born 14 NOV 1873 in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and died 1 SEP 1953 in Racine, Racine, Wisconsin. She was buried 3 SEP 1953 in Mound Cemetery, Racine, Racine, Wisconsin.
Birth
The only source I have right now for Martin and Marie's births are what was reported in their obituaries.
Marriage
I do not have a wedding date or location for Martin and Marie at this time. The 1930 census states that they were both married for the first time at age 22. I believe they were both only married one time. So, if the information in the 1930 census was correct and they were both 22 years old when they got married, and the birth dates given in their obituaries were correct, then they probably would have gotten married between Martin's 22nd birthday on June 12, 1896 and Marie's 23rd birthday on Nov. 14, 1896. The most likely location for their marriage would be either Chicago, Illinois or Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Census
1900 United States Federal Census:
I believe Martin, his wife Marie and their sons William and Walter were living in Chicago in 1900, but I will wait for the census to be indexed to try and locate them. I checked through District 1 with no luck.

Research Interests Imprinting control mechanisms of the small nuclear ribonucleoprotein- N gene. While most autosomal genes are expressed from both parental copies, some are subject genetic imprinting and expression is therefore restricted to either the maternal or paternal allele. The small nuclear ribonucleoprotein N gene ( SNRPN ) on human chromosome 15q11-q13 is one of a cluster of genes expressed from the paternal allele, the maternal copies being silenced. Cytogenetic deletions of the paternal allele or maternal chromosome 15 uniparental disomy cause Prader-Willi syndrome, a mainly sporadic disorder of neurological development and growth in 1/15,000 neonates in the UK. A few cases are associated with paternally inherited microdeletions to exon 1 and the CpG island of SNRPN . These are of interest as they define an imprinting centre (IC) having long range effects in abolishing expression of all the genes in this cluster. Also affected are epigenetic differences (CpG methylation and DNase I hypersensitivity) that are characteristic of imprinted loci. A paternal chromosome carrying such a deletion therefore has a maternal pattern of epigenetic modification and silenced expression.

Status in 1973: Missing In Action
Category: Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: F4C "Phantom II" Other Personnel In Incident: Charles J. Scharf (missing) REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: The McDonnell F4 Phantom used by Air Force, Marine and Navy air wings served a multitude of functions including fighter/bomber, interceptor, photo/electronic surveillance, and reconnaissance. The two man aircraft was extremely fast (Mach 2) and had a long range, 900 - 2300 miles depending on stores and mission type. The F4 was also extremely maneuverable and handled well at low and high altitudes. It was selected for a number of state-of-the-art electronics conversions, which improved radar intercept and computer bombing capabilities enormously. Most pilots considered it one of the "hottest" planes around. On October 1, 1965, Capt. Charles J. Chuck" Scharf, pilot; and then 1st Lt. Martin J. "Marty" Massucci, co-pilot; comprised the crew of an F4C (serial #63-7712), call sign "Gator 3," that was the #3 aircraft in a scheduled flight of 4. Gator flight was conducting a mid-day strike/road reconnaissance mission against Route 155, which was a primary road used to transport war supplies from China to Hanoi; and the North Vietnamese Army's (NVA) Ban Tain staging area located along that route, Son La Province, North Vietnam. The Ban Tain staging area was a suspected truck park located near the Black River valley between Son La and Van Yen Provinces and slightly north of the North Vietnamese/Lao border.
