67. Hannah Arendt And The Meaning Of Politics
An afterword by martin Jay on Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics edited by Craig Calhoun and john McGowan.
http://www.upress.umn.edu/Books/C/calhoun_hannah.html
Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics Craig Calhoun and John McGowan, editors Afterword by Martin Jay Is politics really nothing more than power relations, competing interests and claims for recognition, conflicting assertions of "simple" truths? No thinker has argued more passionately against this narrow view than Hannah Arendt, and no one has more to say to those who bring questions of meaning, identity, value, and transcendence to our impoverished public life. This volume brings leading figures in philosophy, political theory, intellectual history, and literary theory into a dialogue about Arendt's work and its significance for today's fractious identity politics, public ethics, and civic life For each essayon the fate of politics in a postmodern, post-Marxist era; on the connection of nonfoundationalist ethics and epistemology to democracy; on the conditions conducive to a vital public sphere; on the recalcitrant problems of violence and evilthe volume includes extended responses, and a concluding essay by Martin Jay responding to all the others. Ranging from feminism to aesthetics to the discourse of democracy, the essays explore how an encounter with Arendt reconfigures, disrupts, and revitalizes what passes for public debate in our day. Together they forcefully demonstrate the power of Arendt's work as a splendid provocation and a living resource

69. Center For Complex Infectious Diseases
The Center founded by Dr. W. john martin, a researcher of stealth viruses.
http://www.ccid.org/
The primary mission of CCID is to determine the nature, origin, disease associations, modes of transmission, methods of diagnosis and responses to therapy of complex infectious diseases, and to disseminate such information. CCID is currently specializing in the detection and characterization of viruses which have undergone a "stealth" adaptation to avoid elimination by the immune system. It bas now been scientifically proven that stealth viruses do, indeed, exist and can be at the root of many multi-system neuro-degenrative illnesses, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, attention deficit disorder, autism and other diseases causing behavorial changes. CCID's focus is away from the clinical categorization of illnesses into such entities as CFS, FM, MCS, psychosis, etc. Patients are viewed as having multi-system illnesses due to persisting stealth viral infections. Treatments are directed towards suppressing the virus and correcting the metabolic derangements caused by these infections. Integration of laboratory and pharmacy provides a good foundation for appropriate, approved and scientifically valid clinical trials. Enter this site to read about

There is no way to fully prepare yourself for an operation like this.
It's so much more complicated than a simple hospital stay. There are panic attacks and shaky nerves to steady. It's also easy to underestimate the psychological effects of a loved one giving you his or her organ so that you might live a longer, fuller life.
On Tuesday, March 28, Amber and I packed up her car and headed out to Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where we met my father. We underwent a few pre-operative tests the following day, and Thursday I dialyzed hopefully for the last time.
My dad, Amber and I woke up around 3 a.m. Friday, March 31, as did a couple of photographers who walked with us to Northwestern's emergency room, where we waited to be admitted. After that, the waiting just continued.
My dad's surgery didn't begin until around 9 a.m. Hours passed before we heard his operation was taking a little longer than expected, simply because his adrenal gland was more tightly stuck to his kidney than most people's.
A little before 2 p.m., I was wheeled from my room on the 11th floor to the operating room on the seventh, where I was given the chance to question doctors one last time before surgery. Two and a half hours after my operation began, I was taken to the recovery area. Shortly after, I returned to the 11th floor, which was my home until I transferred to Northwestern's Galter/Carriage Outpatient Pavilion on Monday, April 3, where I stayed until Amber brought me home April 10.

73. In Focus: A Photojournalist's Journey Through Kidney Failure
john F. martin, a photojournalist, documented his bout with kidney failure, dialysis and the livedonor transplant he received from his father. Over 100 photos take the reader through the year-long process step-by-step.
http://www.johnfmartin.net
idney disorders currently affect some 3 million people nationwide. In the United States, more than 44,000 people are on The List, patiently waiting to get a phone call telling them they're a near-perfect match for a cadaveric kidney. Hospitals across the country are flooded with more than 100,000 dialysis patients, who sit for hours at a time as man-made machines do what their own kidneys can't: clean toxins and fluid from their blood. In the fall of 1998, these numbers were little more than a jumbled set of statistics for me. I knew early in life there was a chance my kidneys could fail, but I never gave it a second thought. I was too busy growing up and pursuing a career in photojournalism. Read the

on John and his recovery.
Update: 02-28-02
When I learned my kidneys were failing, I turned to the Web for more information. I was disappointed in what I found. While there are a ton of sites filled with statistics and jargon about renal failure and countless kidney organizations and support groups, there was no detailed story of one person's battle with kidney failure, dialysis and transplant. I was looking for someone's complete story that could give me some idea of what was ahead. Who better to undertake such a project than a photojournalist? I admit the whole idea of turning the camera around made me uncomfortable. After all, my place is behind the viewfinder. Thankfully, all the shooters involved are friends and they made it easy for me to become the subject, and after a while, I forgot they were there. The chapters of this Web site chronicle my journey through the kidney transplant process, from early discussions with my doctor, to dialysis and ultimately to the surgery on March 31, 2000. ... 76. The Onion A.V. Club | John Boorman
The Onion AV Club interviews the director of Deliverance on Irish gangster martin Cahill, the subject of his film The General.
http://www.theavclub.com/avclub3502/avfeature3502.html
features cinema music video ... justify January 21, 1999 Volume 35 Issue 02
By Joshua Klein With such diverse movies as Deliverance Hope And Glory The Emerald Forest Point Blank , and Hell In The Pacific to his credit, John Boorman has ensured his reputation as a filmmaker who won't be pigeonholed. But he's also been responsible for some ambitious failures The Exorcist II: The Heretic Beyond Rangoon , and Zardoz , to name a fewwhich means Boorman retains an alternate reputation that also looms large. Fortunately, if there remains any doubt as to which is the real Boorman, his new film The General , a brilliant and vivid portrait of Irish gangster and folk hero Martin Cahill, allays it. The Onion recently spoke to the director. The Onion: Martin Cahill is not very well-known in America. John Boorman: Well, he's a very well-known and notorious figure in Ireland. I first became aware of him in 1981, when he robbed my house! Amongst what he stole was this gold record I had for the music from Deliverance. He obviously thought it was made of gold when he took it. That's why I put that scene in the movie. I sort of followed his career thereafter, when he started doing these big robberies. He had this strange mixture of being elusive and an exhibitionist. He became a very well-known figure, but I couldn't have done a movie about him while he was alive, because he wasn't convicted of any crimes. So it was only when he was killed that the thought came to me [to make a movie]. This guy Paul Williams, a crime reporter, wrote a documentary account of [Cahill's] activities, and I bought the rights to that.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
You're messin' with the wrong guy!" and "I can take anything." are a couple of memorable catchphrases from John Hughes's hit comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The movie stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, currently doing business in New York, who only wants to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Chicago, but instead gets three days with the turkey, a turkey named Del Griffith (John Candy).
The two meet in front of a taxicab and fight over who gets it. Del gets the cab and Neal has to go to the airport by foot. Neal and Del meet again at the airport as they are getting ready to board a plane to Chicago, but a little while into the flight, bad weather forces the plane to land somewhere else, but that ain't going to stop the two guys from getting to Chicago.
Del invites Neal to stay with him at a motel and things get silly when the two share a bed and accidentally fall asleep. They wake up and quickly get out of their beds thinking of something other than their personal lives.

  • Discover more about the life and career of Martin Shaw >> Mr Justice Deed isn't an average high court judge. An idealist at heart, his more traditional colleagues regard him as something of a renegade. Deed's made it to the top of his profession on his own terms, armed with a sharp intellect, a rakish charm, keen wit and passionate belief in justice. Fearless and independent, he's sworn to serve state and sovereign, not the government hacks who constantly try to influence his decisions. Away from the courtroom, Deed continues his tempestuous relationship with prosecution barrister Jo Mills (Jenny Seagrove). His ex-wife Georgina Channing QC (Caroline Langrishe) is now engaged to Cabinet Minister Neil Haughton (Nick Reding). Deed and Haughton are destined not to see eye to eye. Among the guest stars lined up for the new series are John Sessions, Christopher Cazenove, and Donald Sinden. Judge John Deed is written and produced by BAFTA award-winning writer GF Newman, whose previous credits include the ground-breaking BBC series Law and Order and the Channel 4 series The Nation's Health. Executive Producers for the BBC are Mal Young and Ruth Caleb.
