Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
After surgery in 1941, he remained bedridden for most of the remainder of his life, but Matisse felt philosophically reborn. He changed his method of work: instead of painting, he covered sheets of paper with brilliantly hued gouache. Next, he cut out shapes with scissors, and pasted the shapes on flat paper supports. He called the results decoupages or cut-outs. These cut-outs had the wholeness of gesture that most abstract painting could not reach. At an age when most artists are repeating themselves, Matisse re-entered and redefined the avant-garde.
Memory of Oceania, 1953
Matisse attempts to resolve two visions of nature. One vision is that of the artificial paradise-garden, such as the Alhambra in the south of Spain, with nature tamed and formalized to a high degree of comfort. The other was the natural paradise, exemplified for Matisse by Tahiti, where he had visited in the 1930s.
The Chapel of the Rosary
Vence, France In 1947 Matisse immersed himself in the decoration of a small chapel run by an order of Dominican nuns in the village of Vence in southern France. The project was, in his own words, "the last stage of an entire lifetime of work, and the apex of an enormous, sincere and difficult effort."
The cornerstone of the Chapel of the Rosary was laid in 1949 and consecrated in 1952. The interior of the chapel is unexpectedly modest. White tiled walls with black line drawings face blue, yellow, and green stained glass of climbing leaves depicting the Tree of Life. When the sun is shining, the tiles reflect the changing colors of light through the stained glass in a delicate spiritual unity.

"It is not possible for me to copy nature in a servile way; I am forced to interpret nature and submit it to the spirit of the picture. From the relationships I have found in all the tones there must result a living harmony of colors, a harmony analogous to that of a music composition."

"My choice of colors does not rest on any scientific theory; it is based on observation, on feeling, on the experience of my sensibility. Inspired by certain pages of Delacroix, an artist like Signac is preoccupied with complementary colors, and the theoretical knowledge of them will lead him to use a certain tone in a certain place. But I simply try to put down colors which render my sensation." "What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, an art that could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair that provides relaxation from fatigue."

Henri Matisse, often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment.
Matisse's artistic career was long and varied, covering many different styles of painting from Impressionism to near Abstraction. Early on in his career Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist, and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Here he concentrated on reflecting the sensual color of his surroundings and completed some of his most exciting paintings. In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed as having duodenal cancer and was permanently confined to a wheelchair. It was in this condition that he completed the magnificent Chapel of the Rosary in Vence.

H enri Matisse was born in 1869, at Cateau-Cambresis, France. He grew up in in Bohain-en-Vermandois, near the Belgian border, the son of a seed merchant. As opposed to most of the artists covered on this site, Matisse did not begin his artist's career at a very young age. In 1889, he studied law to become clerk, but a bad case of appendicitis, and the sojourn in the hospital made him take up painting as a way to occupy his convalescing time, and two years later, he decided to abandon law, and take up art studies. After a brief stint at the Académie Julian, Matisse enrolled at the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he only stayed for two years due to his disillusionment with the curriculum, and artistic differences with the teachers. After discovering the works of van Gogh Monet and the impressionists, he decided to make color the central focus of his work. As opposed to the impressionists, Matisse used bright colors, and seldom painted outside.

[French Fauvist Painter and Sculptor, 1869-1954]
Grandfather of Paul Matisse
Studied under Gustave Moreau and Adolphe William Bouguereau
Matisse's students included Max Weber
Henri Matisse was the most important French painter of the 20th century, rivaling Picasso in his influence.
His background was diverse. He studied under Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau and experimented with Pointillism, which he found rigidly confining. Later, building on the work of and Gauguin , he and Andre Derain developed Fauvism, a much freer and more expressive style of painting which was in fact the forerunner of Expressionism.

Henri Matisse Matisse, Henri (-Émile-Benoît) (b. Dec. 31, 1869, Le Cateau, Picardy, Fr.d. Nov. 3, 1954, Nice)
artist often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. (Biographie en français)
Matisse, Master of Color
The art of our century has been dominated by two men: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They are artists of classical greatness, and their visionary forays into new art have changed our understanding of the world. Matisse was the elder of the two, but he was a slower and more methodical man by temperament and it was Picasso who initially made the greater splash. Matisse, like Raphael , was a born leader and taught and encouraged other painters, while Picasso, like Michelangelo , inhibited them with his power: he was a natural czar.
