Along with Picasso, Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in (c. 1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g.

Hilary Spurling: The Unknown Matisse
Hilary Spurling is no art historian, but a broadly acclaimed biographer (e.g.: Paul Scott ). After eight years of research on the subject, she has published a brilliantly written book about the Henri Matisse (1869-1954). She explores the life and work of young Matisse up to his recognition in the years 1907-1908 (a second volume on the following years is still to be published). Spurling successfully goes beyond the - sometimes false - anecdotes that were known about Henri. With the help of Matisse' family, Spurling presents a lot of details about his childhood and in particular about the national financial scandal that ruined his wife's family, who had been a vital support for the artist.
Matisse was born in 1869 in the French part of Flanders, near the Belgian border. According to Spurling, he was a typical child of the Picardie: brusque, sober, unromantic, but full of energy and wit. In the drawing lessons at school, he had to copy mecanically geometric objects. Deviation from the established method or using colour was immediately punished. Matisse rebelled against it and this might be the reason why he became a great colorist. Another inspiration for the color in his paintings were the weavers of his hometown Bohain.
His father was a seed merchant and Henri was to have become a lawyer. For this reason he went to Paris for a year, fullfilling the middle-class aspirations of his family. Only at 20 did he discover his true calling when he saw Léon Bouvier's painting "Swiss Chalet" (1890). He moved again to Paris - but this time to study art. In order to get admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he first had to study in one of the multiple Paris art schools. He moved from William Bouguereau to Gabriel Ferrier and then to Gustave Moreau, where he finally got recognition. Matisse was influenced by the paintings of Chardin and Goya. His teacher Moreau was a painter who despised the "art du salon", so Matisse remained in a certain sense an "outcast" of the art world. He initially failed his drawing exam for admission to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but persisted and was finally accepted.

Henri Matisse
Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. He joined Gustave Moreau's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he met Camoin, Manguin, Marquet and Jean Puy Woman Reading, 1894
Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes. T IMELINE The 20th century ``Instinct must be thwarted just as one prunes the branches of a tree so that it will grow better.''
Henri Matisse (b. Dec. 31, 1869, Le Cateau, Picardy, Fr.d. Nov. 3, 1954, Nice)
artist often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment.
Encyclopaedia Britannica
(Biographie en français)
Matisse, Master of Color
The art of our century has been dominated by two men: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They are artists of classical greatness, and their visionary forays into new art have changed our understanding of the world. Matisse was the elder of the two, but he was a slower and more methodical man by temperament and it was Picasso who initially made the greater splash. Matisse, like Raphael , was a born leader and taught and encouraged other painters, while Picasso, like Michelangelo , inhibited them with his power: he was a natural czar.

Worcester Collection, 1953.158 View enlargement During his long career, Henri Matisse worked in varied media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage . Matisse's art diverged from the Cubist style in his freer use of color and greater attention to the decorative effects of line and pattern. A leader of Fauvism , a movement that relied on the exaggerated, non- naturalistic use of color, Matisse later began to exhibit a more austere style closer to Cubism. Bathers by the River, a work completed in several stages between 1909 and 1916, is a supreme example of this phase in Matisse's art. It is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The painting began as one of three panels commissioned for the residence of a Moscow collector. The first version was a stylized rendering of a pastoral scene showing five nude females near a waterfall. After the collector decided not to purchase that

When I put a green, it it not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky. Henri Matisse Henri Matisse painted Open Window, Collioure
The scene is filled with light, vibrant, and inviting. The vermillion masts of blue-hulled boats float on pink waves below a sky banded with turquoise, pink, and periwinkle. Reflected in the glass of the open window, the scene becomes rectangular blocks of bright green, watery cyclamen, and lilac, and the walls framing the view are violet and turquoise. These are hardly the colors of natureand they provoked an outrage when Matisse exhibited Open Window, Collioure later in the year at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
"Tiens, Donatello chez les fauves" (Well, well, Donatello among the wild beasts). Soon, these artists were being called the fauves, and room VII le cage. It was one of the first places where the world got a glimpse of what art would be in the twentieth century.
The fauves liberated color from any requirements other than those posed by the painting itself. "When I put a green," Matisse would later say, "it is not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky." He was painting pictures, not things. Color was a tool of the painter's artistic intention and expression, no longer limited by the imitation of nature.
Though he was inspired by what he saw around him, for Matisse the imperative was to "interpret nature and submit it to the spirit of the picture." Derain later called the fauves' color "sticks of dynamite," but the serious and hard-working Matisse was an unlikely revolutionary. It was something of an accident that he became an artist at all. Growing up in the bleak, industrial regions of northern France, he had showed no talentor even interestin painting.
