Henri Matisse
During the course of his long and exceptionally varied artistic life, Henri Matisse redefined the basic principles of art and secured a place as one of the masters of the Modern period.
Born in northern France in 1869, he began painting in 1890 and quickly discarded plans for a law career. Studying art in Paris, he began to experiment with form and color, an exploration that flourished over the ensuing years through painting, sculpture, lithography and other forms.
Matisse's stature as the most significant artist in the Paris School by the onset of World War I owed largely to the influence of Leo and Gertrude Stein and their circle. Until his death in 1954, he pursued his interest in the sensual properties of color and his concept of line as a means to explore shape and space.

88. Henri Matisse
He was henri matisse, the famous artist of the twentieth century. henri matissewas born on December 31, 1869 at Le CateauCambresis in France.
http://www.kyrene.k12.az.us/schools/brisas/sunda/art/matisse.htm
A young Frenchman was roaming around his house pondering what to paint. Taking his easel, palette and tubes of paint he went out to his garden thinking that he would get an idea or two there. He sat on the steps of his front porch of his old Moroccan house and started watching. He was Henri Matisse, the famous artist of the twentieth century. Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 at Le Cateau-Cambresis in France. His father was a prosperous grain merchant and his mother was an artistic woman who made hats and paints of China. He married Amelie Parayre from Toulouse, France in 1898. They had two sons.
Henri was never interested in art while he was growing up. His father expected him to either work at their store or become a lawyer. So Henri chose to go to Law school but found it really boring. One day his mother gave him a box of paints so he would have something to do. Suddenly he was no longer bored. Henri found out he loved to paint. He got a job as an assistant lawyer. He took some art courses before going to work and was spending more and more time drawing and painting. He decided to become a full time artist. Henri went to study art at a famous art school in Paris, France. He worked very hard studying all the things needed to become a good artist. He also took up a municipal evening course in sculpture. He was not a popular student and many didn't like him. Henri did not like the way they taught art in the school. He had a style of his own. One of his teachers took special interest in him. His name was Gustave Moreau. He felt that Henri had great talent and that he would become a great artist someday.

Reserve a group visit Matisse Picasso is the first exhibition dedicated to the lifelong dialogue between two of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Struck by each other's genius since they met in 1906, each recognized the other to be his only true rival and measure of his success. Matisse Picasso tells the compelling story of two artists who, by looking at and learning from one another for nearly half a century, were driven to ever higher levels of accomplishment, and despite their personal differences, were closer in spirit than any other two artists of that time.

The Fauves Between 1901 and 1906, many of the work of the Post-Impressionistic artists, like Cézanne Gaugain and Van Gogh , was exposed in France. Some of the younger generation of artist, like Van Dongen and De Vlaminck , were very impressed by the work and they developed a total new style based on the post-impressionism. The new aspects were the vivid colors and the unreal disforming of objects. In 1905 the group exposed their work for the first time. The critics called them a discrase for art and therefor called them 'The Fauves'. The Fauves means 'Wild Beasts', a name that the artists of the group excepted with pride They decided to call their group like that. The central artist of the group was Henri Matisse . In his work he used vivid colors and precise indications of the structure by strong outlines. The work of Matisse is based on the principals and possibilities of 'leaving out'. The human minds can fill in what is missing in the painting, like dimension, details and plastical forms. In stead of following the German Expressionists by expressing their feelings of unhappiness with the society, The Fauves expressed their feelings of joy for life and joy for art and painting.

Saturday December 1, 2001 The Guardian
View the work online Artist: Henri Matisse (1869-1954) painted a world suspended in time, at once modern and archaic. He was in his 30s when the 20th century began, entering middle age when his rival Picasso painted the revolutionary Demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907. By then Matisse was established as leader of the avant-garde group known as the fauves, or wild beasts, proselytisers for pure colour. And yet the world they saw was recognisably the same as that painted by the impressionists when Matisse was a baby, a 19th-century bourgeois sphere of elegant pleasure. Matisse was not thrown by Picasso and Braque's more extreme modern movement, cubism - or only a little. He experimented with flattenings of space, while never abandoning his study of colour, and his art emerged as a unique, inimitable form of modern abstraction.

    • Prints by Henri Matisse including Music 1939, Large Red Interior 1948, and Chapel of the Rosery 1951. Prints should represent the changes in art through his life.
    • Print of The Snail, by Henri Matisse. 1953.
    • Woman with the Hat 1905. Private collection. (Found in Raboff book)
    • Face paints, brush, water jar.
  • Explain that Henri Matisse was alive when Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec were. He was born five years after Henri Toulouse-Lautrec but lived much longer. Because Matisse took care of himself and didn't overdo things like Toulouse- Lautrec, he lived a long life of almost 86 years. Matisse began his art career one year after Van Gogh died at the age of 22. He startled the world when he and several other artists had an exhibit of art that took Impressionism one step farther. Colors were very bright and in some cases totally different from the actual colors. For instance, faces had blues and greens in them. (See Woman with the Hat, 1905) People said that it looked like wild beasts painted the paintings. The French word for "wild beasts" is "Fauves." This is how Matisse became known as the father of Fauvism. Henri chose the simple lines of a child and pure color to help us read what he thought.
