http://www.museum.oas.org/permanent/surrealism.html
Roberto Matta One must recognize the power exerted by Surrealism in this introductory period(1900-1950's). Mexico provided a natural home for the movement and many of its outstanding figures served to reinforce a century-old native tradition running from Jose Guadalupe Posada through Julio Ruelas and Frida Kahlo to Francisco Toledo. At the other end of the continent, in Argentina, Surrealism was practiced as an intellectual exercise, in accordance with orthodox European principles. Strange: These exceptions aside, although South America has been described as a "Surrealist continent, "the theories of the European Surrealists and their “planned fantasies" had practically no repercussion there whatever. Modern Latin American art is nourished in large part from the myths and magical beliefs that are integral to most of the region’s societies, and carry far deeper meaning than the limited fantasizing of a René Magritte or a Paul Delvaux. Excerpt from the introductory essay of

Paintings, Sculptures, roberto Sebastian Antonio matta Echaurren was born inSantiago, Chile in 1911. Permanent Collection, roberto matta (Continued).

Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren was born in Santiago, Chile in 1911. He studied architecture at the Universidad Catolica in Santiago. In 1933 Matta traveled to Paris and worked for two years as a draftsman in the Paris studio of famed architect Le Corbusier. While visiting his aunt in Madrid, he met Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Neruda introduced Matta to Salvador Dali and Andre Breton. Impressed by Matta's drawings, Breton invited him to join the Surrealist group in 1937. Influenced by his association with the Surrealists and by Marcel Duchamp's theories of movement and process, Matta began to explore the realm of the subconscious and to develop an imagery of cosmic creation and destruction.

(Continued) His early works, the Psychological Morphologies and the Inscape series, were organic in style and content. By 1939 the war in Europe drove Matta to exile in New York, where he was an important influence on the young New York School artists, especially in his use of automatist techniques.

Psychological Morphology Roberto Matta Considering the absolute inventiveness, and the magisterial incitement to exploration and discovery
that one encounters in the visual works of Matta, it is obvious that he was the greatest painter of the
20th Century, and most likely of the 21st as well. It is the pure explosion
of a mysterious and magical knowledge that excites, and undermines the otherwise mundane and aesthetic
history of "art" with it's boring reasons for being. Matta stands alone and points the way... Preliminary Translation and Notes by Pierre Petiot In autumn 1938, Matta launched the expression psychological morphology . He spoke about it in Les Deux Magots* with large gestures and using the objects which were at hand, in front of an impassive Breton who declared not to have understood anything of it. He asked Matta to write down his theories. This was difficult for Matta, not due to the fact that he did not have ideas enough, but because it was causing him to lose his momentum. But he succeeded in producing this text: Psychological Morphology A T he concept of a psychological-time medium in which the objects are transforming, leads to compare it with an Euclidian space caught in a rotative and pulsatile transformation in which the object, with each risk of interpenetration may oscillate from point-volume to moment-eternity, from attraction-repulsion to past-future, from light-shadow to matter-movement. The fourth dimension would be the diagram of the risks encountered during the complete duration of the transformations.

Editorial Portal do Assinante Cidades ...

ROBERTO MATTA by Kathy Zimmerer
Latin American Masters , Beverly Hills) In a stunning retrospective of Roberto Matta's fluid drawings and paintings from 1936 to 1959, his preoccupation with the terrain of the subconscious and nature's shifting microcosms are closely interwoven. During the 1940s in New York, Matta's Surrealist visions provided much of the connective tissue linking the Surrealist exiles with the burgeoning School of Abstract Expressionism. Known for his compelling, dream-like rendering of space, Matta was born in Chile in 1912. Originally he was trained in his native country as an architect and interior designer. He left for Paris in 1932 to work as a draftsman in the Paris studio of Le Corbousier. Through a letter of introduction from Frederico Garcia Lorca he met Salvador Dali, who suggested he show his drawings to Andre Breton. Matta joined the Surrealists in 1937, and exhibited in the major international Surrealist exhibit that opened in Paris in 1938. Because of the ominous threat of war, Matta left for New York in 1938and produced his strongest works ever. Although a relative latecomer to Surrealism, Matta's eerie depictions of inner space highly influenced pivotal Abstract Expressionist painters such as Arshile Gorky and Robert Motherwell.

cidade
