Post 1914 Claude Monet
French artist Claude Monet was one of the most innovative and productive of the impressionist painters and continued to paint in this style throught his life
click picture to enlarge By 1914 he was seventy four years of age,but he was yet to have his most fulfilling periods of painting. The most famous paintings following this time were his "Decoration" series. They were paintings of his water garden and the most well known were of waterlilies. This was the culmination of his long journey as a painter. He was encouraged to do these paintings by Georges Clementeau, a well known polititian and a close friend who sustained his later career as a painter. His journey as an artist began in the late 1950s,when he was nearly twenty. He was discovered by Eugene Bodin who encouraged him to paint outdoors with him. Bodin believed that "Everything that is painted directly and on the spot always has a force or power, or vivacity of touch that is not to be found in studio work". Monet found this type of painting more exciting than traditional academic studio work and this preference lasted throughout his life. In a letter written to Gustave Gaffroy in 1920 he expresses his gratitude and appreciation of Bodin as the main mentor of his career. He briefley studied academic figure painting in art school due to pressure from his parents. These paintings were accepted by the traditional salon but Monets intrests lay elswhere. His main influences came from painters who did not work in the traditional academic chiaroscuro style notably the Dutch painter,Johan Barthold Jongkind.

Claude Monet
Monet, Claude , 1840-1926, French landscape painter, b. Paris. Monet was a founder of impressionism. He adhered to its principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative painter of the school as well as one of the foremost painters of landscape in the history of art.
As a youth in Le Havre, Monet was encouraged by the marine painter Boudin to paint in the open air, a practice he never forsook. After two years (1860-62) with the army in Algeria, he went to Paris, over parental objections, to study painting. In Paris, Monet formed lasting friendships with the artists who would become the major impressionists, including Pissarro, Cézanne, Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille. He and several of his friends painted for a time out-of-doors in the Barbizon district.
Monet soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of light and atmosphere brought on by changes of hour and season. Rather than copy in the Louvre, the traditional practice of young artists, Monet learned from his friends, from the landscape itself, and from the works of his older contemporaries Manet, Corot, and Courbet. Monet's representation of light was based on his knowledge of the laws of optics as well as his own observations of his subjects. He often showed natural color by breaking it down into its different components as a prism does. Eliminating black and gray from his palette, Monet rejected entirely the academic approach to landscape.

Artist - Monet Monet, Claude-Oscar (1840-1926) Portrait by Carolus-Duran One of the world’s most famous landscape artists, Monet was a leading member of the Impressionist group. He rejected the conventions of high finish and tonal colour to complete pictures out of doors and directly in front of the subject. His rapid technique, luminous palette and attempts to capture fleeting weather conditions were at first condemned by critics. Later however, Monet was hailed as a master in the painterly tradition of French art. Read the BBCi Arts profile. Thames below Westminster , c.1871 Haystacks, Snow Effect Monet: did you know? "Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you," advised Claude Monet. He was a successful caricaturist in his native Le Havre, but after studying plein-air landscape painting, he moved to Paris in 1859. He soon met future Impressionists Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir and Monet began painting outdoors together in the late 1860s, laying the foundations of Impressionism. In 1874, with Pissarro and Edgar Degas, Monet helped organize the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, etc., the formal name of the Impressionists' group. During the 1870s Monet developed his technique for rendering atmospheric outdoor light, using broken, rhythmic brushwork. He received little but abuse from public and critics alike, who complained that the paintings were formless, unfinished, and ugly. He and his family endured abject poverty. By the 1880s, however, his paintings started selling; Pissarro accused him of commercialism, and younger painters called him passé, for he remained loyal to the Impressionists' early goal of capturing the transitory effects of nature through direct observation. In 1890 he began creating paintings in series, depicting the same subject under various conditions and at different times of the day. His late pictures, made when he was half-blind, are shimmering pools of color almost totally devoid of form.

Claude Monet
Paris 1840-Giverny 1926

Claude Monet
was one of the Fathers of Impressionism, true enough. But until the last day of his fruitful old age, he never stopped seeking new ways of putting the effects of colour and light down on canvas.
Water Lilies and Agapanthus
Virtual Visit de rigueur , Monet took up with a young model, Camille Doncieux, whom he married in 1870. Women in a Garden were rejected two years later. Was it too modern? Or too much "garden" and not enough "studio"? I leave it to you to second guess the Salon jury. Monet went back to Le Havre, to his family that was anxious to get him away from Camille. The birth of a son, Jean, struck a hitherto unsuspected paternal chord: with wife and son, he settled in the country near Bougival, department of Yvelines. Not quite the Giverny gardens yet, but already Monet was eager to surround himself with a flower garden. After all, he needed something to paint, even in bad weather.

Impression: Sunrise , crystallized the perplexity of the critics in regards to this new way of painting. Monet was no longer content to paint simply out-of-doors; he began working on the water, in a specially outfitted studio-boat, from which he could calmly observe the motion of the water and the clouds it reflected. In Paris, he was more likely to visit the Saint-Lazare Station than the Louvre: the train station's steaming engines and grand halls bathed in light inspired him in a way that scenes from ancient mythology couldn't.

"I would like to paint as the bird sings" - Claude Oscar Monet (1840 -1926)
Whenever Claude Monet talked or wrote about his art it was his role as an interpreter of nature and the natural world that he emphasized. His response to everything he saw about him, and it's subsequent translation into paint were amongst the most direct and heartfelt in the history of Western art S o, whats all this Monet stuff about then? The aim of this site is not just to showcase his visual artworks, as there are many places on the 'net where you can go do that. My purpose for this collection of Dali pages is to give you an insight into a broader picture of Monet, where people new to Monet can read a bit about his history, and view a collection of his most famous work, as well as art by him which isn't so wel l recognised.
