"The Cross of Snow"... Longfellow Born in the city of Bolton, Lancashire, England on 12 January 1837, Thomas Moran was destined to become one of America's greatest landscape artists . He and his family sailed from Liverpool, England in April 1844 to America. Thomas Moran Sr., a weaver by trade, settled the family in Philadelphia...one of the textile centers of the country. Thomas showed an early interest in art, and at the age of 15 he sought employment in an engraver's shop...the chosen occupation of young aspiring artist of that day. Never really mastering the engravers trade, his drawings drew the attention of his employer. Noting the quality of his work, he was kept busy sketching designs on the engraver's blocks for others to engrave. Moran began to spend his spare time doing watercolors and drawing, which he easily sold for $10 to $15 apiece. In 1856, Tom and his brother Edward, who was also an aspiring painter, rented a studio in Philadelphia. There, they could study and apply their craft full time. Thomas was to show a growing interest in the works of H.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), an English painter of note. His early works reflected much of the style of Turner. This can be seen in the paintings below...(Turner, left...Moran, right) Thomas Morans' first extended trip in search of the scenic wonders was to the Lake Superior region in 1860..."to the shores of Gitchee Gumee". No artist at that time had visited this area.

Thomas Moran was born on 12 February 1837 in Bolton, England, the son of a hand-loom weaver whose life had been irrevocably changed by the advent of the Industrial Revolution. Displaced by labor-saving machinery, Thomas Moran Sr. emigrated to America. He settled his family in Kensington, Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia), in 1844. By the time young Thomas completed grammar school and entered an apprenticeship with a local engraving firm, his older brother Edward had embarked upon a career as an artist. Harboring the same ambition, Thomas terminated his apprenticeship prematurely and began working with Edward in his studio.

30. Thomas Moran
thomas moran Artist of the Mountains, Thurman Wikins, University of Oklahoma Press,1966. thomas moran (Video), KRSCTV, Rogers University, Claremore, Oklahoma
http://ellensplace.net/moran4.html
In August of 1874, Moran joined the Hayden survey team in Denver, Colorado to explore a region that few had seen. The Mountain of the Holy Cross, which lay in an especially rugged range, had remained largely unknown because of being obscured by the Notch Mountains to the East, and was inaccessible to most travelers. Not until the late 1860's was there any written reports of this religious symbol carved by nature into stone. The upright fissure reached approximately 1,100 feet, with arms at least 200 feet long. Through the years, part of the right arm of the cross has eroded the clarity of the image. Moran felt a strong sense of obligation that American artists should paint their own country. He said that "there was little need of American landscape painters going abroad in search of the grand, the sublime, and the beautiful". "There is no phase of landscape in which we are not richer, more varied and interesting than any country in the world." The railroad help transform the West from a little known, inaccessible, and sometimes feared region, to a place where thousands of settlers and tourist sought to explore and visit. Through extensive publicity campaigns the railroads published many pamphlets, posters, and booklets encouraging Americans to see this most remarkable part of America. Moran was to travel by rail as a guest of the railroads to visually record the West many times in the years ahead. Although Moran is known by a few enormous canvases depicting spectacular scenes from the West, there are over 1,500 oils, 800 watercolors, and countless drawings from Lake Superior, Tetons, Yosemite, Sierras, Old Mexico, Europe, and the region around East Hampton, Long Island, where he and Mollie spent many summers.

Moran has created another engrossing world in this novel set in Ireland. The author of The World I Made for Her (1998) puts his heroine, Una Moss, in the coastal town of Cobh. Una narrates her own colorful tale, telling us early that she is an orphan. Her parents' car crash has left her at least a rich orphan. She lives off a trust and is going to school to become a physician. She has met the love of her life, Aidan Ferrel. She easily settles into a cozy life of poetry readings, love, and chemistry classes. Her grandfather Rawney is her guardian until she moves in with "me best girls," namely Fallon and Gaynor. Despite this, things are not all they seem. The twists and turns begin with Una's discovery that her parents' car accident was not accidental. Then the "troubles" are never far away, no matter how far south one is. She even witnesses an IRA execution. Yet Aidan continues to provide a blissful retreat from any "troubles" for a time. The title refers to Una's desire for the waters off Cobh to hold her up and defy the forces that would pull her down into the murky depths. Marlene Chamberlain (Booklist/February 1, 2000)

At first, apprenticed to a wood engraver, Moran soon turned to painting, returning to Europe to study in London in 1861 and in France, Germany and Italy in 1867. In 1871 he accompanied an expedition to the Yellowstone, now a National Park, which led to the production of some of his best known works. Two of his paintings were purchased by the U.S. Government in 1871 and 1873 and he subsequently enjoyed a long and successful career as a painter of the American landscape. Moran settled on Long Island in New York State where he lived for most of his life, but he did return to his hometown on several occasions. He travelled extensively throughout America painting and this painting shows the grandeur and ruggedness of Arizona.
