Mon, Dec 4, 1:41AM EST (-0500 GMT) In Moran's first The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (1872), there was a feeling of "discovery", showing some explorers (probably the exploration party of which Moran was the guest painter) pointing at the canyon. Moran's second version (1893-1901), shown above, seems to show a mood of "nostalgia" - depicting an image of the canyon at a point in time which was before its discovery. I'm curious to see what the painting might look like if the mood was reversed - changed into one looking into the future. How about transforming the painting to have an "apocalyptic" feeling. The ominous cloud above the waterfall and the "spooky", cold feel of the lower foreground already contribute to this feeling. Maybe the light could be dimmed, and some dark, swirling atmospheric affects could be added? Mary: . . . . And the color transformations in real life are spectacular. When lightning strikes, whole sections of the Canyon are eerily back lit. Your suggested image is indeed "spooky." I wish we didn't have to wait so long for these WebChat images to load. Is there any way to compress them, so we don't have to wait for them to appear on our screens. Thomas Moran was, at the beginning of his storied career, an immigrant from England recently settled in the United States. He and his family had settled in New York where Moran sought work as an artist. A talented illustrator and exquisite colorist, Moran was soon hired as an illustrator at Scribner's Monthly . By the close of the 1860's, he had been appointed chief illustrator of the magazine, serendipitously landing the position which would allow him access to a prosperous future as one of the premier painters of the American landscape. As a result of the powerful images created from his travels with what are now known as "The Great Surveys" Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley, and The Mountain of the Holy Cross in ColoradoMoran would earn the nickname "Father of the National Park System" because of the tremendous influence his paintings had on the emergence of Western tourism and on the members of Congress who resolved to set aside vast areas of the West as National Parks. Stephen Tyng Mather, a Director of the Park Service in the 1920's, said of Moran upon the artist's death in 1927 that he, "more than any other artist has made us acquainted with the Great West..." He made Americans see the beauties of their national heritage and prove to the plain citizen "that he did not have to leave his native shores to look on something more wonderful than the Alps." During his five months in hospital, much of that time on a ventilator, Moran experienced "coma visions" and near death which he retells here through his alter ego, James Blatchely, a man who struggles to remain emotionally alive in spite of the virus's physical assault. Blatchely does this by observing, befriending, and then fantasizing a life for his two Irish nursesBrigit who, he discovers, uses drugs to endure the pain she witnesses daily in Intensive Care, and Nuala, with whom he falls in love. Through the depiction of Blatchely's erratic, inching descent toward death, readers gain visceral insight into a patient's encounter with critical illnessbut the real heroes of this book are the nurses. We observe them through Blatchely's eyes, and they are the force that enables him to survive, if not in body, at least in mind. This beautifully written novel creates a world in which both patients and caregivers are fully human, bound together by their shared experience of the patient's illness and by the life the imagination enjoys when the body cannot.
