Mucha Museum in Praag

http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/mucha.htm
Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Ivancice, Moravia, which is near the city of Brno in the modern Czech Republic. It was a small town, and for all intents and purposes life was closer to the 18th than the 19th century. Though Mucha is supposed to have started drawing before he was walking, his early years were spent as a choirboy and amateur musician. It wasn't until he finished high school (needing two extra years to accomplish that onerous task) that he came to realize that living people were responsible for some of the art he admired in the local churches. That epiphany made him determined to become a painter, despite his father's efforts in securing him "respectable" employment as a clerk in the local court. Like every aspiring artist of the day, Mucha ended up in Paris in 1887. He was a little older than many of his fellows, but he had come further in both distance and time. A chance encounter in Moravia had provided him with a patron who was willing to fund his studies. After two years in Munich and some time devoted to painting murals for his patron, he was sent off to Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian . After two years the supporting funds were discontinued and Alphonse Mucha was set adrift in a Paris that he would soon transform. At the time, however, he was a 27 year old with no money and no prospects - the proverbial starving artist.

Welcome to MUCHA MUSEUM

Mucha's art involves women of a religious looking appearance painted in light pastel colors. They have long wavy hair, a defined outline and Byzantine decoration which gives a mysterious impression . The art of Mucha who was called the pioneer of Art Nouvear, still impresses us a hundred years after he was alive. "There is no new or old in art because art is eternal" This was the spirit of Academie Colarossi where he had learned and taught, it was also the spirit of Mucha himself. Talented artists want to create art that will last forever and I believe Mucha has done that with the great works he has left us. His art brought a new wave of art into Paris and has since spread all over the world leaving a strong impression in our hearts which we remember for years. People in Paris were fascinated by his works which were expressed by the beauty of women and depicted in the delicate details of the plants and the preciseness of life, because of this he has gone to America as a hero of Bell Époque. Mucha's atelier was the center of Paris' culture at that time period. The great actress, Sarah Berndhardt and other famous artists, philosophers and scientists were attracted to this art. There is a famous story that the first film show in the world was held by the Dumiere brothers in this atelier.

The Art of Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939)
From Documents Decoratifs. Preface de Gabriel Mourey. Paris: Librairie Centrale des BeauxArts[1902]:
Alphonse Mucha did not create Art Nouveau, but his work, especially as a poster artist, came to symbolize the full flowering of the style and the era. Born in Moravia, in what is now part of Czechoslovakia, Mucha worked as a painter of theatrical signs and court murals in Vienna and studied art in Munich. He arrived in Paris in the late 1880s, just as posters were emerging as the most popular art form of the day, due in part to the relatively new color printing process, chromolithography. Mucha struggled to make a living as a graphic artist, producing book illustrations, calendar art and other decorative designs, until he received a commission to do a poster for Sarah Bernhardt in Gismonda . The poster, which appeared on January 1,1895, marked a sharp break with previous poster design. The legendary Sarah and the public adored it, and its phenomenal success made Mucha a celebrity and the creator of images that embodied an entire era.
Documents Decoratifs published by the Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts and printed by Emile Levy, is a visual statement of Mucha's artistic creed. In it he set down the precepts of Art Nouveau and its decorative elements. The portfolio, which contains 72 plates, was used for years by many art schools as a textbook, and it influenced a whole generation of artists.

The Seasons 1896

Alphonse Maria Mucha is most often remembered for the dominant role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a graphic to advertise the greatest actress of the time, Sarah Bernhardt. That first widely circulated artwork and those that followed were so revolutionary in concept and style that Mucha's art became widely known throughout Europe as "le style Mucha."
Parfum Rodo 1896
Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia, in what is now Czech Republic. A serious artist with high aspirations, Mucha worked towards a career as a history painter - and had already received commissions for large murals and oil paintings representing traditional religious and historical subjects - when he decided to augment his natural artistic talent with formal training. Aided by the financial support of a wealthy Czech patron, Mucha pursued his studies in Prague and Munich before finally succumbing to the compelling lure of Paris in 1887.

Art Nouveau
"An international style of decoration and architecture which developed in the 1880s and 1890s. The name derives from the Maison de l'Art Nouveau , an interior design gallery opened in Paris in 1896, but in fact the movement had different names throughout Europe. In Germany it was known as 'Jugendstil', from the magazine Diejugend (Youth) published from 1896; in Italy 'Stile Liberty' (after the London store, Liberty Style) or 'Floreale'; in Spain 'Modernista', in Austria 'Sezessionstil' and, paradoxically, in France the English term 'Modern Style' was often used, emphasizing the English origins of the movement. "In design Art Nouveau was characterized by writhing plant forms and an opposition to the historicism which had plagued the 19th century. There was a tension implicit throughout the movement between the decorative and the modern which can be seen in the work of individual designers as well as in the chronology of the whole. Its emphasis on decoration and artistic unity links the movement to contemporary Symbolist ideas in art, as seen in the work of the Vienna Secessionists, but the movement was also associated with Arts and Crafts ideas and, as such, Art Nouveau forms a bridge between Morris and Gropius (recognized by Pevsner in his book
