Edvard Munch (1863-1944)
The Norwegian artist Edvard Munch is regarded as a pioneer in the Expressionist movement in modern painting. At an early stage Munch was recognized in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new epoch. His star is still on the ascendant in the other European countries, and in the rest of the world. Munch's art from the 1890s is the most well known, but his later work is steadily attracting greater attention, and it appears to inspire present-day artists in particular. Edvard Munch grew up in Norway's capital, Oslo, then called Christiania. His father, Christian Munch - brother of the well-known historian P.A. Munch - was a deeply religious military doctor earning a modest income. His wife, who was 20 years his junior, died of tuberculosis when Edvard was only five years old, and Edvard's older sister, Sophie, died of the disease at the age of 15. Edvard himself was often ill. A younger sister was diagnosed with mental illness at an early age. Of the five siblings only one, Andreas, ever married, only to die a few months after the wedding. His childhood home was culturally stimulating, but in his art Munch turned again and again to the memory of illness, death and grief.

Home Kunstarchiv

Artist Index 5 Centuries of Art Collection MUNCH, EDVARD A Norwegian artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Edvard Munch used the vague, curving brushstrokes of the Post-Impressionist technique to evoke feelings of despair, longing and regret. A tragic childhood, punctuated by the deaths of Munch's mother and elder sister, left the artist with a sense of hopelessness which his life's work would only further validate. However, in spite of his brooding tendencies, and much like his legendary contemporary Vincent Van Gogh, Munch captured the sensuality of the human form in subtle, repressed color tones and flowing curves. Perhaps his finest single piece, "The Madonna" uses the form a sleeping nude to express a deeply melancholy sexuality.

Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intense, evocative treatment of psychological and emotional themes was a major influence on the development of German Expressionism in the early 20th century. His painting The Cry (1893) is regarded as an icon of existential anguish. A gifted Norwegian painter and printmaker, Edvard Munch not only was his country's greatest artist, but also played a vital role in the development of German expressionism . His work often included the symbolic portrayal of such themes as misery, sickness, and death. The Cry , probably his most familiar painting, is typical in its anguished expression of isolation and fear. The Scream (or The Cry)

Munch was born on Dec. 12, 1863, in Loten, Norway. He grew up in Christiania (now Oslo) and studied art under Christian Krohg, a Norwegian naturalistic painter. Munch's parents, a brother, and a sister died while he was still young, which probably explains the bleakness and pessimism of much of his work. Paintings such as The Sick Child Vampire (1893-94), and

Accordingly, we want to devote our first exhibition on the Internet to Norway's most outstanding painter, Edvard Munch. In the exhibition we focus on Edvard Munch and Symbolism

    Edvard Munch
"The camera cannot compete with the brush and the palette so long as it cannot be used in heaven or hell," observed Edvard Munch in one of his better-known aphorisms. Although the artist himself never regarded the camera as a competitor to his brush, he nevertheless made use of it throughout his career in various ways. Munch himself was the most important subject of his photographs. In his self-portraits he sometimes appears as a transparent shadow, an effect caused by moving from his pose to cover the lens of the camera. This feature is typical of a series of self-portraits taken by Munch in 1908-1909, which he called "photographs of fate". The artist had thus discovered a way to merge into his surroundings. The room and everything around the subject blend into a whole in a silent, melancholy manner. The photograph is no longer a fleeting moment in time but a medium of meditation. Munch did not capture the moment in his photographs, but let time flow into them in a unique way. He went to make a long series of self-portraits in the 1920s and '30s, observing that
