Munch's art from the 1890s is the most well known, but his later work is steadily attracting greater attention, and it appears to inspire present-day artists in particular. Edvard Munch grew up in Norway's capital, Oslo, then called Christiania. His father, Christian Munch - brother of the well-known historian P.A. Munch - was a deeply religious military doctor earning a modest income. His wife, who was 20 years his junior, died of tuberculosis when Edvard was only five years old, and Edvard's older sister, Sophie, died of the disease at the age of 15. Edvard himself was often ill. A younger sister was diagnosed with mental illness at an early age. Of the five siblings only one, Andreas, ever married, only to die a few months after the wedding. His childhood home was culturally stimulating, but in his art Munch turned again and again to the memory of illness, death and grief.

Während seiner Kindheit erlebt er den Tod seiner Mutter und seiner 15-jährigen Schwester Sophie, beide sterben an Tuberkulose. Diese Schicksalsschläge und die Angst vor dem Höllenfeuer - was ihm sein Vater predigt - prägen den jungen Munch. Er will vor allem sein eigenes Leben malen, nachdem er seine Ingenieurausbildung abgebrochen hat. Seine Ausstellungen sind meist kritisiert oder als Skandal dargestellt worden. 1894 entsteht "Der Schrei" sein wohl berühmtestes Bild. Es folgen produktive Jahre, die aber von Nerven und Alkoholproblemen begleitet werden. Munch kann sich durchsetzen und wird mehr und mehr anerkannt und geehrt. Keine Ehre empfindet Munch als 1937 die Nazis viele seiner Werke als "entartete Kunst" brandmarken. 1944 stirbt Edvard Munch auf seinem Hof in Ekely bei Oslo. Seine Werke vermacht er der Stadt Oslo. Edvard Munch INDIETRO indice Postimpressionismo Edvard Munch (1863-1944) è senz’altro il pittore che più di ogni altro anticipa l’espressionismo, soprattutto in ambito tedesco e nord-europeo. Egli nacque in Norvegia e svolse la sua attività soprattutto ad Oslo. In una città che, in realtà, era estranea ai grandi circuiti artistici che, in quegli anni, gravitavano soprattutto su Parigi e sulle altre capitali del centro Europa. Nella pittura di Munch troviamo anticipati tutti i grandi temi del successivo espressionismo: dall’angoscia esistenziale alla crisi dei valori etici e religiosi, dalla solitudine umana all’incombere della morte, dalla incertezza del futuro alla disumanizzazione di una società borghese e militarista. Nell’opera di Munch sono rintracciabili molti elementi della cultura nordica di quegli anni, soprattutto letteraria e filosofica: dai drammi di Ibsen e Strindberg, alla filosofia esistenzialista di Kierkegaard e alla psicanali di Sigmund Freud. Da tutto ciò egli ricava una visione della vita permeata dall’attesa angosciosa della morte. Nei suoi quadri vi è sempre un elemento di inquietudine che rimanda all’incubo. Ma gli incubi di Munch sono di una persona comune, non di uno spirito esaltato come quello di Van Gogh. E così, nei quadri di Munch il tormento affonda le sue radici in una dimensione psichica molto più profonda e per certi versi più angosciante. Una dimensione di pura disperazione che non ha il conforto di nessuna azione salvifica, neppure il suicidio.
