THE RUSKIN LIBRARY LANCASTER UNIVERSITY CURRENT EXHIBITION 9th January - 11th April Ruskin and the Old Masters Allegory of Good Government, by Charles Fairfax Murray Ruskin's understanding of Old Master painting is illuminated in his letters and diaries, and by the drawings and watercolours which he made in Milan, Assisi, Florence and Venice. Other works will be shown by his associates and copyists, including Edward Burne-Jones, Angelo Alessandri and Charles Fairfax Murray. Study of Astronomy and Music, Spanish Chapel, Florence by John Ruskin After several visits to Italy with his parents, Ruskin returned again and again to study painting and architecture. In 1845 Ruskin discovered the work of Fra Angelico in Florence and Tintoretto in Venice. He collected photographs and other reproductions but believed that far more could be understood during the act of drawing directly from the original. He did this himself, spending much time making sketches and highly detailed studies, many of which are exhibited here. Ruskin published several items about or containing references to the Old Masters. Most of his later writings on art were on the Florentine and Venetian painters, beginning with

T he area now called Fairfax was originally part of the Mexican Land Grant, Canada de Herrera, consisting of 6,558 acres, conferred to Domingo Sais on August 10, 1839, in return for his military service under the government of Mexico. One of the first Europeans to settle in the area was a Virginian, Dr. Alfred W. Taliaferro, Marin's first and most beloved physician, who was given the park-like glen, the Marin Town and Country Club property, by Domingo Sais. A fellow Virginian, Charles S. Fairfax, also fell in love with the property when he paid the good doctor a visit. Taliaferro transferred the property to Fairfax and in 1855 Fairfax and his wife, Ada, made it their home. T he town of Fairfax derives its name from A man of honor, fiercely patriotic, never coveting his noble title, Charles Fairfax died in 1869 after traveling east as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention, at the home of his mother. After his death, his widow sold the property to Mary Owens and moved to Fort Ross. "Treehouse"would serenade those dining below. I n the 1890's the former Fairfax home became a hotel and restaurant, Pastori's, becoming as renowned as "Bird's Nest Glen" had been when Charles and Ada Fairfax owned it. Its excellent food, service and setting attracted clientele from near and far, the elite from San Francisco and the famous from across the country. In 1911 the restaurant burned to the ground, destroying the last vestige of the Fairfax home. Madame Pastori immediately rebuilt in an even grander style. This building still stands today on the Marin Town and Country Club property.

The Fitzwilliam Museum was described by the Standing Commission on Museums & Galleries in 1968 as "one of the greatest art collections of the nation and a monument of the first importance". It owes its foundation to Richard, VII Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion who, in 1816, bequeathed to the University of Cambridge his works of art and library, together with funds to house them, to further "the Increase of Learning and other great Objects of that Noble Foundation". Fitzwilliam's bequest included 144 pictures, among them Dutch paintings he inherited through his maternal grandfather and the masterpieces by Titian, Veronese and Palma Vecchio he acquired at the Orléans sales in London. During a lifetime of collecting, he filled more than 500 folio albums with engravings, to form what has been described as "a vast assembly of prints by the most celebrated engravers, with a series of Rembrandt's etchings unsurpassed in England at that time". His library included 130 medieval manuscripts and a collection of autograph music by Handel, Purcell and other composers which has guaranteed the Museum a place of prominence among the music libraries of the world. "The Fitzwilliam Museum is one of the greatest glories of the University of Cambridge. It is a museum of international stature, with unique collections most splendidly housed... Like the University itself, the Fitzwilliam Museum is part of the national heritage, but, much more, it is part of a living and continuing culture which it is our statutory duty to transmit".
