August 3 through 9, 2003 "The unexplainable thing in nature that makes me feel the world is big far beyond my understanding — to understand maybe by trying to put it into form. To find the feeling of infinity on the horizon line or just over the next hill."
Cerro Pedrenal at Sunset, Abiquiu, New Mexico 2000
To many, Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico are synonymous. The colors, shapes, and textures of the desert world stimulated O'Keeffe's unique artistic vision. She in turn captured the elemental force of the region in which she chose to live. The resulting works became icons of twentieth-century art dramatic, sensuous, tactile images that immortalized both the artist and landscape.

Published in association with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum During the second half of the nineteenth century, the exotic South African calla lily was introduced in the United States, and it began to appear as a subject in American art. The flower became even more popular with artists after Freud provided a sexual interpretation of its form that added new levels of meaning to depictions of it. The calla lily soon became a recurring motif in works by important painters and photographers, particularly Georgia O’Keeffe, who depicted the flower so many times and in such provocative ways, that by the early 1930s she became known as "the lady of the lilies."

The Book Room:
Georgia O'Keeffe's
Library in Abiquiu.
CURATED BY Ruth Fine, Elizabeth Glassman, and Juan Hamilton. Sponsored in cooperation with the Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation, in December of 1997 the Grolier Club presented an exhibition of more than 100 books, periodicals, and ephemera from the private library of Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986). The exhibition provided a remarkable opportunity to explore the intellectual and personal life of one of America's most significant 20th-century artists. The "Book Room" was O'Keeffe's designation for the library she maintained in her adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Consisting of some 3,000 volumes, the library represents a cross section of O'Keeffe's extraordinary range of interests-from the mundane to the esoteric. The objects selected for the exhibition illuminate not only O'Keeffe's personal interests, but also, through the authors represented, they reveal the complex web of relationships that O'Keeffe sustained with the most important writers, artists, and intellects of the 20th-century. Foremost among these was Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), the great promoter of photography and modern art, and O'Keeffe's early champion and, later, husband. O'Keeffe's Book Room contains items that she saved from Stieglitz's own impressive library after his death. Highlights included in the exhibition were Gertrude Stein's idiosyncratic Portrait of Mabel Dodge at Villa Curonia, privately printed in Florence by the author and inscribed to Stieglitz, and an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind copy of Oscar Wilde's The Ballad of Reading Gaol, inscribed in 1903 to Stieglitz's mother by Edward Steichen, who embellished the edition with his own exquisite pencil illustrations in the Symbolist mode.

March 29-May18, 2003 Pomodoro is one of Italy's leading sculptors. His large-scale abstract forms cast in bronze are site specific. For a communications center in Germany, the artist designed a sculpture based on papyrus.. The corrugated irregular surface of the sculpture was intended to suggest a scroll which was unfolded and taken shape in space. For the United Nations headquarters in New York, he designed sphere which suggested the earth's shape. Organized by Marlborough Gallery, New York, in conjunction with the Muscarelle Museum of Art.

Georgia O'Keeffe and the Calla Lily in America Art, 1860- 1940
May 31-August 10, 2003 During the second half of the 19th century several American artists became interested in the calla lily, an exotic South African flower that became available in the US by mid-century. The elegant forms of this flower became increasingly popular as a subject in American art after 1900 when it was depicted by a variety of painters and photographers. Artists represented in this exhibition are Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Rebecca James and Joseph Stella. The Muscarelle Museum of Art will lend its painting of a calla lily by Preston Dickinson to the exhibition.

Drawing on new scholarship and including many rarely seen works from private collections, O'Keeffe on Paper presents 52 stunning watercolors, pastels and charcoals by Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986). The exhibition offers fresh insights into this distinctive and little-known aspect of the artist's oeuvre. It is on view at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico, July 29 through October 29, 2000. The exhibition is organized by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. It is made possible by The Burnett Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation and the National Advisory Council of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The exhibition celebrates the publication of the two-volume O'Keeffe catalogue raisonné, a major scholarly project of the National Gallery of Art in partnership with The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. We are delighted to collaborate with the National Gallery in presenting this exceptional exhibition, honoring the publication of the catalogue raisonné and bringing before the public works of such significance, said George G. King, director, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. He noted that the O'Keeffe Museum celebrates its third anniversary in July as well.

With a unique, innovative and original style, Georgia O'Keeffe stamped her independant mark on 20th century art and culture. Born into a Wisconsin farming family, which supported and appreciated individuality, Georgia knew her destiny as a teenager. "After we are through school," she told her classmates, "I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls." This collection is from a series of flower paintings in the 20s and 30s. (CLICK ON THE IMAGES OR LINK

Iris 1929 (Dark Iris 2 1929) When she grew up, women were constrained by American society, in their dress, their education, in their opportunities. Georgia O'Keeffe did not care about these restraints. She dressed in plain, loose clothes, tied her hair back in a braid. She took her own ideas into her art, creating simple paintings with broad areas of smooth, delicate colours. A superb handling of few colours gave her work a lustre and life that matched the organic subjects. She spoke of why she painted flowers; "Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small - we haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time...So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."

Major Themes Your Relationship
Composite Sun Semi Square Venus
Pleasure and a share of the good life are indicated. How much and how good depends upon your values and levels of self-esteem. The more you're sincere rather than superficial the further you can go. Composite Moon Conjunct Mars
The relationship is anything but dispassionate. You arouse strong feelings in each other. In fact, you could find yourselves on an emotional roller-coaster ride punctuated by some emotional loop-de-loops. Disagreements will tend to be vigorous and reconciliations will also tend to be intense. As long as you are open to the creative resolution of problems, you can make it. Composite Moon Quintile Uranus
Knowing each other could be a most disturbing, irritating and stimulating experience. Your life together is exciting and erratic. Somehow, the two of you could be in a relationship that is radically different and socially unconventional. A good helping of freedom is necessary to make things work. The longer you're together, the more your world views and attitudes will change.
