Victorian Fairy Art
At the turn of the eighteenth century, British artists began to create much
more fairy art than they previously had. By the mid nineteenth century,
the popularity of fairy paintings had been recognized, and
this kind of art created a distinct genre for itself. The growth of the fairy art genre was aided by the
renewed interest in Shakespeare. Shakespeare's concept of a faeryland
that existed somewhere in the British countryside and the emergence
of fairies as a subject for art helped make fairies a symbol of British
folk lore.
Some historians believe that the popularity of fairies in the
Victorian era was a reaction against the strict no-nonsense
scientific views of the time. During a period when magical and creative ideas were looked down on, some people looked to fairies as a way to express this more mystical side of their nature. One of the best-known Victorian fairy painters was Sir Joseph Noel Paton, a Celtic artist who became known after he painted an epic scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream which was based on the quarrel and reconciliation of Oberon and Titania. His paintings of

~ TO BE A KNIGHT OF LIGHT ~ Sir Joseph Noel Paton Sir Galahad Can you imagine taking a vow to become a knight of light as part of your spiritual practice ? The work would entail protecting the victims of manipulation and greed; in addition you would act to counter the actions of those who cause suffering to others. Assuming a role in a cosmic knighthood of service, however, requires attuning to the spiritual power that flows all the way down through the hierarchy of beings who form the spiritual governance of the world to those on the earth plane working to better the human condition. For when people act in the name of the Universe rather than out of their own personal incentive, they are empowered - the power that creates miracles, brings dreams into reality and creates heaven on earth. But this cannot happen without those who have dedicated and consecrated themselves to act as emissaries of the governance of the One and Only being, God. The only weapons that are permissible in this cosmic crusade are lances of light that dispel the darkness. In fact, the fulfillment of such a task requires of us that we awaken the light even in our own bodies. It also means discovering the light in others as well, reinforcing each others' luminosity in mutual recognition.

    Galahad and the Grail
As we discussed in class, the first Grail knight was Perceval ( click here to visit the Perceval and the Grail page). But Galahad eventually took centre stage. He was a particularly popular character in the Arthurian revival, and this page offers you a glimpse of his appearances in 19th- and early 20th-century illustration and text. There are more images of Galahad and the Grail at the ArtMagick site, and at the Camelot Project site (on the latter site, follow the link to "Main Menu," which will give you a list of Arthurian characters, symbols, and places).
"Sir Galahad," by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1834)
My good blade carves the casques of men,
    My tough lance thrusteth sure,
My strength is as the strength of ten,
    Because my heart is pure.
    The shattering trumpet shrilleth high,
The hard brands shiver on the steel,
The splinter'd spear-shafts crack and fly,
    The horse and rider reel:
They reel, they roll in clanging lists
