Teachers' Guide
This teachers' guide investigates three National Gallery of Art paintings included in the exhibition Picasso: The Early Years, 1892-1906 (March 30-July 27 1997). This guide is written for teachers of middle and high school students. It includes background information, discussion questions and suggested activities.
Background on the Artist: Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso , one of the most dynamic and influential artists of our century, achieved success in drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics as well as in painting. He experimented with a number of different artistic styles during his long career. The exhibition The Early Years traced his development from 1892-1906, just prior to the advent of cubism. In Barcelona in 1899 Picasso's circle of friends included young avant-garde artists and writers who traveled between Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris. Picasso also visited these cities and absorbed the local culture. His early works were influenced by old masters such as El Greco and and by modern artists including Paul Gauguin Edgar Degas , and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec . Picasso moved to Paris in 1904 and settled in a dilapidated section of Montmartre, a working-class quarter. This area was home to many young artists and writers, and he was gradually assimilated into their stimulating intellectual community. Although Picasso benefited greatly from the artistic atmosphere in Paris and his circle of friends, he was often lonely, unhappy, and terribly poor. During this period his sympathy for social outcasts was reflected in his art, both in his subject matter including blind beggars and destitute families and in his melancholy blue color schemes. Picasso's "Blue period," from 1901 to 1904, is represented in the exhibition by

One of those messy little divorce cases involving a scandalously wealthy couple the kind that makes good tabloid reading won't be going to court after all. When Paloma picasso and her Argentine husband called it quits, he sued for half her fortune, estimated at around 500 million pounds ($815 million, give or take). Rafael LopezCambil claimed that he helped his wife, daughter of pablo, build her cosmetics business and was therefore entitled to half of everything. Now comes word that the couple, married since 1978, has agreed to settle matters outside the courtroom. No terms were disclosed. Wired News

The Art Canvas - Picasso

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso was the most influential and successful artist of the 20th century. Painting, sculpture, graphic art, and ceramics were all profoundly and irrevocably affected by his genius.
As the son of a professor of art, Picasso's talent for drawing was recognized at an early age. An advanced student at the Barcelona Academy of Fine Arts from the age of 14, he experimented in his youth with nearly all of the avant-garde styles current at the turn of the century, an early demonstration of his lifelong ability to assimilate aesthetic ideas and to work in a variety of styles. For Picasso, the meaning of art was to be derived from other works of art, and not directly from nature. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work had a significant impact on his early paintings, as did the work of Paul Cézanne . Their influence, among others', can be detected in the paintings of Picasso's "blue period" (1901-04), which was stimulated by his exposure to life and thought in Paris, where he made his home after 1904. In works such as The Old Guitarist (1903; Art Institute, Chicago) he created evocative portrayals of blind, impoverished, or despairing people in a predominantly blue palette. His use of blue as a motif was apparently derived from the symbolic importance of that color in the contemporary romantic writings of Maurice Maeterlinck and Oscar Wilde, whose work often derived its force from depictions of madness or illness. Although his palette and subject matter changed when he entered (1904) what is called his "rose period," during which he painted harlequins and circus performers in a lighter and warmer color scheme, an underlying mood of spiritual loneliness and lyrical melancholy that marked his "blue" paintings was retained. The paintings of this period, however, do display a classical calm that contrasts clearly with the nervous expressionism of the blue period.

The Spaniard pablo picasso and the Frenchman Georges Braque splintered the visualworld not wantonly, but sensuously and beautifully with their new art.

Picasso and Cubism
The art of painting original arrangements composed of elements taken from conceived rather than perceived reality.
Guillaume Apollinaire, The Beginnings of Cubism After Cubism, the world never looked the same again: it was one of the most influential and revolutionary movements in art. The Spaniard Pablo Picasso and the Frenchman Georges Braque splintered the visual world not wantonly, but sensuously and beautifully with their new art. They provided what we could almost call a God's-eye view of reality: every aspect of the whole subject, seen simultaneously in a single dimension. The Cubist movement in painting was developed by Picasso and Braque around 1907 and became a major influence on Western art. The artists chose to break down the subjects they were painting into a number of facets, showing several different aspects of one object simultaneously. The work up to 1912 is known as Analytical Cubism, concentrating on geometrical forms using subdued colors. The second phase, known as Synthetic Cubism, used more decorative shapes, stencilling, collage, and brighter colors. It was then that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut-up newspaper in their paintings. © 14 Oct 2002

Picasso: One-on-One with Painting
by Octavio Paz
Picasso's life and work are one with 20th-century art history. Modern painting cannot be understood without Picasso, just as Picasso cannot be understood without modern painting. I do not know whether he is the best painter of our time. But I do know that, in all its brutal and amazing changes, his painting is the painting of our time. What I mean is that this art is not ahead, against or removed from it. Neither it is a prophecy of tomorrow's art nor a nostalgic recollection of the past, as that of so many artists in disagreement with their world and their time. Picasso never remained aside, not even on the moment of the great rupture ushered in by Cubism. Even when he disagreed he was the painter of his time. An extraordinary merging of the individual genius and the collective genius...
I finish writing these lines and come to a halt. Picasso was a non-conformist artist who broke the pictorial tradition. He lived on the margin of society and, at times, struggled against its morals. He was a savage individualist and rebellious artist whose social conduct, private life and esthetics were ruled by a same principle: rupture. How is it possible, therefore, to say he is a painter representative of our time?
To represent means to present an image of something - to be its perfect likeness. Representation demands not only an agreement and affinity with that which is being represented, but also conformity and, principally, resemblance. Does Picasso hold any resemblance to his time?
