Edward Poynter was born in Paris, his father an architect and landscape painter. Following in his father's footsteps the young Poynter started his career by painting landscapes. Poynter was soon persuaded to paint figural compositions after meeting and becoming friends with a host of Victorian classical painters that were working at the time.

Poynter married Agnes MacDonald, the sister of Burne-Jones wife Georgiana. Burne-Jones disliked Poynter, who was an unsympathetic, brusque character. When Leighton died in 1896, he was succeeded as President of the Royal Academy by Millais, who was suffering from cancer of the throat. On the death of Millais a few months later, Poynter succeeded him, narrowly defeating Briton Riviere in the vote. He was PRA for the next two decades. Obituary

Victorian Art in Britain Obituary - Sir Edward Poynter
The Times Monday 28th July 1919.
DEATH OF SIR E POYNTER A GREAT VICTORIAN
We regret to announce the death of Sir Edward Poynter at his home at 70, Addison Road, W., on Saturday morning aged 83. Sir Edward John Poynter, first baronet, President of the Royal Academy from 1896 to 1918, and Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1905, was the son of Ambrose Poynter, an architect, well-known in his day as the designer, among many other buildings, of St Katherine's Hospital, Regents Park. On his mother's side he was the grandson of Thomas Banks, RA., a sculptor of eminence, whose funeral oration was pronounced by Flaxman. The young Poynter was of artistic descent on both sides, and though neither of his ancestors was a painter, his love for architectural backgrounds and for a sculpturesque treatment of form may perhaps be traced to those inherited influences. He was born in Paris on March 20, 1836; but soon afterwards his parents returned to London, and most of his boyhood was spent in Westminster, the family living first near Poets' Corner, and afterwards in Queen Anne's Gate. Delicate health made his early education somewhat unsettled; he was for a short time at Westminster School and afterwards at Brighton College and Ipswich Grammar School, which, again for reasons of health, he left in 1852, spending that and subsequent winters in Madeira and Rome. As many of his pictures show, he had a good acquaintance with classical literature, and the intention was to send him to university; but the accident of these winters abroad and a very pronounced inclination for Art caused the plan to be changed, and it was decided he should be an artist.

potential circuits, and hence the difficulties just considered are for the most part peculiar to American systems. of consideration. (L. EL.) POWIS, EARLS AND MARQUESSES OF. Before the Norman Conquest the Welsh principality of Powis, comprising the county of Montgomery and part of the counties of Brecknock, Radnor, Shropshire, Merioneth and Denbigh, was subject to the princes of North Wales. Early in the 12th century it was divided into upper and lower Powis. In 1283 Owen ap Griffin, prince of upper Powis, formally resigned his princely title (nomen et circulum principatus) and his lands to the English king Edward I. at Shrewsbury, and received the lands again as an English barony. (See Monigomeryshire Collections, 1868, vol. i.). This barony of Powis passed through female inheritance to the family of Cherleton and in 1421 to that of Grey. It fell into abeyance in 1551. In 1587 Sir Edward Herbert (d. 1594), a younger son of William Herbert, earl of Pembroke, purchased some of the lands of the barony, including Red castle, afterwards Powis castle, near Welshpool, and in 1629 his son William (c. 1573—1656) was created Baron Powis. William’s grandson, William, the 3rd baron (c. 1629—1696), was created earl of Powis ill 1674 and Viscount Montgomery and marquess of Powis in 1687. The recognized head of the Roman Catholic aristocracy in England, Powis was suspected of complicity in some of the popish plots and was imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1678 to 1684. He followed James II. into exile and was created duke of Powis by the dethroned king. The English government deprived him of his estates, but these were restored to his son William, the 2nd marquess, in 1722. William, who had a somewhat chequered career as a Jacobite, died in October 1745, and when his son William, the 3rd marquess, died in 1748 the titles became extinct.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848 by a group of English painters: Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt , as well as poets and critics: William Michael Rossetti, an art critic and Dante's younger brother; the art critic Frederic George Stephens; the painter James Collinson; and the sculptor and poet Thomas Woolner . Millais left the group in 1859, but as the second generation Pre-Raphaelites, other English artists joined it, including the painter Edward Coley Burne-Jones ; the poet and artist William Morris was never a Pre-Raphaelite in the true conception of the term. The group reacted against the Victorian materialism and the conventions of the Royal Academy in London and was inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painters up to and including the Italian painter Raphael. They found their inspiration at first from the bible, history and poems, but soon the subjects from modern life were also used rooted in realism and truth to nature. Pre-Raphaelite art became distinctive for its blend of archaic, romantic, and moralistic qualities.

    Sir Edward John POYNTER
    Biography
    20 March 1836, Paris - 26 July 1919, London
Edward John Poynter, was born in Paris, his father Ambrose Poynter being an architect and landscape painter. In 1853, aged only 16, he was to encounter Leighton in Rome and the deep impression he made fixed him in his choice of career.
He studied at Leigh's Academy, also with William Dobson, at the Royal Academy Schools, and then returned to Paris in 1856, working under Charles Gleyre at the same time as Alma-Tadema . Three years in 'the Capital of Art' imbued him with strict academic and classical principles, which became central to his future outlook.
Poynter first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1861, and thereafter contributed both regularly and abundantly. His first popular success came with Faithful unto Death (1865, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) in which a soldier stoicly remains at his post during the destruction of Pompeii. Uniting heroism and historical accuracy with his own technical mastery and superior draughtmanship proved a winning formula. This was followed by the large, evocative and celebrated paintings Israel in Egypt (1867, Guildhall Art Gallery, London) and

    IMAGES ON TWO CD-ROMS, REPRODUCED
    FROM THE ORIGINAL PAINTINGS
The artists of the pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and other Victorian-era painters working in similar styles created some of the most sensuous and evocative images. While most of us have seen these pictures in reproduction or as coarse JPEG files on the web, they can only be truly appreciated by those fortunate enough to view the original canvasses. Sadly, scattered throughout galleries and private collections around the world, these pictures are generally only accessible to someone with a lot of time to kill and a private jet. The Indecent Images CD-ROMs are almost as good as being there. We've licensed photographs of one hundred truly breathtaking paintings from Christie's Images of London, one of the world's leading image libraries. These pictures have been professionally photographed onto four by five inch transparencies and laser-scanned as Photo-CD files. Vastly superior to the reproduction in books and art prints, these pictures are as close to the originals as technology can manage. Each CD-ROM includes fifty paintings. The Indecent Images CD-ROMs include a complete multi-resolution Photo-CD image pack for each painting, as well as high and low resolution PNG and JPEG copies of each. All the graphics have thumbnails, suitable for browsing with Graphic Workshop. A free copy of the Graphic Workshop UltraLight viewer is included on each disc, should you not have the full Graphic Workshop package. Each CD-ROM also includes an HTML document with some commentary and background for selected pictures. Finally, there's a custom screen saver package included with each CD-ROM which will display your choice of these graphics whenever your computer is idle.

Sir Edward Poynter, 1836-1919 Woman and Her Sparrow, 1870 Private Collection Looking like an incredible photograph from the ancient world, Woman and Her Sparrow exhibits remarkable detail and ornate design. A highly successful painter, Sir Edward Poynter achieved a high status in the art world for much of his career. His forte was depicting historical subjects, generally those from Greek and Roman antiquity. His formula for success was to research his subject matter thoroughly and then depict each scene as true to the past as it could be, thus creating a modern reincarnation of ancient anecdotes and tales. Woman and Her Sparrow is a colorful portrayal of a beautiful and intriguing woman from the ancient past. Atop her hand rests a dainty sparrow, trusting enough to enjoy the maiden's company. Poynter skillfully places greenery and flowers throughout the scene, adding a luxurious and lavish feel to the painting. As always, the picturesque Greek marble motifs remind the viewer that he or she is viewing a scene of ancient life. Poynter's usage of vivid colors and his talent for accurately depicting many different textures and surfaces makes this a prized painting. As an artist, there was little the talented Sir Edward Poynter could not do. Quite versatile, Poynter created mosaics, pottery, tiles, stained glass, and frescoes (paintings done on plaster walls). In addition, his accolades as a painter led him to positions of leadership in the art world. He earned such titles as Slade Professor at University College, London (1871-1875),Director of the National Gallery (1894-1904), and Royal Academy President (1896-1918).
