Rembrandt Van Rijn Biography: Rembrandt was born in 1606 in Holland. He lived to be 63 years old and painted right up to the end of his life. He died in 1669. Interesting Facts: He was a Renaissance artist and the best subjects he liked to draw were either self-portraits or portraits of people he knows or is related to. Rembrandt was known as the most accomplished etcher ever. He liked dogs and included them in many of his paintings. He painted over 500 pictures and used light and dark colors. He got paid for his paintings but never seemed to have enough because he was a big spender. He made the people he painted seem alive, even more that a photograph could. Famous Works: His best etching was " Six's Bridge " which was a landscape. His best painting was the " Syndics of the Drapers Guild ." This painting was of a group of important men whose job it was to make sure that all the cloth made in Amsterdam was made just right. He painted the group of men looking right at you and it was almost like you walked in during their meeting and they stopped to see what you wanted. The men seem friendly and caring. Personal Thoughts: "I feel that Rembrandt had some really great paintings. I wish I could go back in time to see him. His paintings look so real like you are inside of the picture. One day I would like to take a plane and see his paintings and I would like to be like him."

Perhaps no painter has ever equaled Rembrandt's chiaroscuro effects or his bold impasto. Life Born in Leiden on July 15, 1606, Rembrandt was the son of a miller. Despite the fact that he came from a family of relatively modest means, his parents took great care with his education. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the University of Leiden. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art-first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils, among them Gerrit Dou. Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. An exceptionally fine example from this period is the Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts (1631, Frick Collection, New York City). In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as The Blinding of Samson (1636, Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt). Because of his renown as a teacher, his studio was filled with pupils, some of whom (such as Carel Fabritius) were already trained artists. In the 20th century, scholars have reattributed a number of his paintings to his associates; attributing and identifying Rembrandt's works is an active area of art scholarship.

Era hijo de un molinero perteneciente a la clase media holandesa, por lo que pudo asistir a la Escuela Latina y en 1620 matricularse en la Universidad de Leiden, aunque desconocemos en qué materias. En 1621 abandona los estudios universitarios e inicia su aprendizaje artístico en su ciudad natal con un oscuro pintor llamado Jacob van Swanenburgh, en cuyo taller estuvo tres años. Entre 1624 y 1625 continuó su aprendizaje en Amsterdam, esta vez en el taller de un pintor de mayor relieve, Pieter Lastman, de quien toma la influencia de Caravaggio y Elsheimer. Besides the Pellicorne family portraits of 1632 now in the Wallace Collection, we have the caligraphist Coppenol of the Cassel Gallery, interesting in the first place as an early example of Rembrandt's method of giving permanent interest to a portrait by converting it into a picture. He invests it with a sense of life by a momentary expression as Coppenol raises his head towards the spectator while he is mending a quill. The same motive is to be found in the "Shipbuilder," 1633 (Buckingham Palace), who looks up from his work with a sense of interruption at the approach of his wife. Coppenol was painted thrice and etched twice by the artist, the last of whose portrait etchings (1661) was the Coppenol of large size. The two small pictures of "The Philosopher" of the Louvre date m 1633, delicate in execution and full of mysterious effect.
