Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
painter, poet england 12 May 1828, London: 38 Charlotte Street - 9 Apr 1882, Birchington-on-Sea, Kent
Real name: Rosetti, Gabriel Charles Dante
Grave location: Birchington, Kent: All Saints' Churchyard
Son of Gabriele Rossetti and Frances Polidori. He spoke fluently Italian as well as English and was educated at King's College School (1837-1842), F.S. Cary's Academy of Art (1842-1846) and the Royal Academy Antique School. In 1847 he left school to concentrate on art. He sent a fan letter to Ford Madox Brown, whom he admired much. Brown thought Rossetti was being sarcastic and went to the Rossetti family home to give him a sound trashing. There he found to his surprise that Rossetti was absolutely sincere. Brown became Rossetti's mentor and their friendship lasted for life.
When he was only eighteen Rossetti wrote his poem "The Blessed Damozel", which stresses the importance of human love. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt, John Millais, James Collinson, Thomas Woolner, Frederic Stephen and his brother William Rossetti. They published "The Germ", a platform for their poetry and other art. In 1849 he first exhibited an important painting, "The Girlhood of Mary Virgin" (now at the Tate Gallery, London).
In 1850 he met Lizzie Siddal, one of the models for the pre-raphaelite painters. She became his pupil as well as his lover and also an important source of inspiration. In 1851 they became engaged.

LENORE
by
(Translated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti)
Up rose Lenore as the red morn wore,
From weary visions starting:
"Art faithless, William, or, William, art dead?
'Tis long since thy departing."
For he, with Frederick's men of might,
In fair Prague waged the uncertain fight;
Nor once had he writ in the hurry of war,
And sad was the true heart that sickened afar.
The Empress and the King,
With ceaseless quarrel tired,
At length relaxed the stubborn hate
Which rivalry inspired:
And the martial throng, with laugh and song,
Spoke of their homes as they rode along,
And clank, clank, clank! came every rank,
With trumpet-sound that rose and sank.
And here and there and everywhere,
Along the swarming ways,
Went old man and boy, with the music of joy,
On the gallant bands to gaze;
And the young child shouted to spy the vaward,
And trembling and blushing the bride pressed forward:
But ah! for the sweet lips of Lenore
The kiss and the greeting are vanished and o'er.
From man to man all wildly she ran
With a swift and searching eye;

THE SONGWRITER AS POET: IAN MCCULLOCH AND THE PRE-RAPHAELITE TRADITION Kristin F. Smith blinfool@fiberpipe.net Notes and sources are at the end. Notes are hyperlinked in the text] Some things never die. Certain strains of thought, ideals and principles exist so deeply within the human psyche they will never cease to be part of what defines us. As do inhabitants at various points along a riverbank, like-minded people through different times and cultures draw from the same stream, be it philosophical, political – or literary and artistic. An outside observer, tasting the water they have drawn, will recognize a common source. So it is with that group of 19 th Century British painters and poets known collectively as the Pre-Raphaelites and a present-day British singer/songwriter named Ian McCulloch. PART I: WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE? “If you think [U2’s] I Will Follow is an anthem,” Ian McCulloch once remarked to an interviewer, “‘I Will Lead’ is the song I would have written” [Zach]. Best known as the frontman for Liverpool rock band Echo and the Bunnymen, McCulloch began writing songs (and provoking thought, if not hostility) in the late 1970s. Strong statements of principle, often coupled with biting references to his less exacting compeers, largely define the McCulloch/Bunnymen ethos.

Home Page Debussy's Biography Debussy's Works and Style Summary Glossary
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82) was a poet, translator, and painter. He was born in London, the son of Gabriel Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti, a Neapolitan political exile who came to England in 1824, and of Frances Mary Lavinia Polifoti Rossetti. Rossetti's family background was essentially Italian and he was brought up in an atmosphere of keen cultural and political activity.
Rossetti went to King's College School in London in 1836-43, where he learned Latin and French. In 1843-46 he attended Cary's Art Academy in Bloomsbury Street. By that time, Rossetti's inclination toward painting and poetry was apparent.
Rossetti studied painting with Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais in 1848, with whom he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The other members were Thomas Woolner, Frederick George Stephens, William Michael Rossetti, and James Collinson.
Rossetti met Elizabeth (Lizzie) Siddal (or Siddall) in 1850, who modelled for Rossetti and many of his Pre-Raphaelite circle; she appears as the drowned Ophelia in the painting by J.E. Millais. Rossetti and Lizzie got married in 1860. Lizzie gave birth to a still-born child and died from an overdose of laudanum in 1862. Her death affected Rossetti very much and an increasing morbidity became apparent in his works.
Rossetti's paintings and poetry are highly symbolic, detailed, and concerned with the remote and sometimes sensuous and erotic (e.g.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Snowdrops Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites . Together with Holman Hunt and Millais , he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. He later was the centre of a new group of Pre-Raphaelite inspired painters, tempting the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists. He was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime lead him to abandon his studies there, and he then worked for a period under Ford Madox Brown . In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Paintings of Jane Morris
Jane Morris was the wife of Rossetti's friend and fellow Pre-Raphaelite William Morris. After the death of Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth Sidal, Rossetti fell passionately and obsessively in love with Jane Morris, using her constantly as the model for his paintings. Jane Morris came to epitomize the Pre-Raphaelite image of womanvery much in contrast to the slight, blond, fragile, corsetted female form that typified conventional Victorian female beauty. The novelist Henry James described Jane Morris in the following way: "A figure cut out of a missalout of one of Rossetti's or Hunt's picturesto say this gives a faint idea of her, because when such an image puts on flesh and blood, it is an apparition of fearful and wonderful intensity. It's hard to say whether she's a grand synthesis of all the Pre-Raphaelite pictures ever madeor they are a "keen analysis" of herwhether she's an original or a copy. In either case she is a wonder. Imagine a tall lean woman in a long dress of some dead purple stuff, guiltless of hoops (or of anything else I should say), with a maze of crisp black hair, heaped in a great wavy projections on each of her temples, a thin pale face, great thick black oblique brows, joined in the middle and tucking themselves away under her hair, a mouth like the "Oriana" in our illustrated Tennyson, a long neck, without any collar, and in lieu thereof some dozen strings of outlandish beads. In fine complete."
