Mark Rothko: A Retrospective
I did not go to the Rothko Chapel to pray. Surrounded by black canvas in a hushed room, could I hope for a reflection of myself or of God? I could not safely turn from a painting to contemplate something else, not even something in me. Put away talk of pure plasticity and the sublime's cosmic drama . I had entered a place where I could live for a while with myself. Mark Rothko created that special place, and I entered it again this summer. I do not mean the building I had once visited in Houston. I mean the place one enters again at his retrospective in Washington. As I left this summer's show, I thought back with a shock on what the age of big-time museums takes for granted. I had forgotten how art can darken the world's mirrors to let in a stronger light. Critics have compared that light to the harsh northern sun. They have recalled the grand aspirations of the nineteenth-century sublime. Perhaps, but Rothko offers something more down to earth. A Romantic mirror of the eternal seems far away. These paintings hold out a darker, far more palpable kind of mirror, the clouded glass of everyday perception.

His first solo show took place at the Portland Art Museum in 1933. more ]. He executed easel paintings for the WPA Federal Art Project from 1936 to 1937. By 1936, Rothko knew Barnett Newman. In the early 1940s, he worked closely with Gottlieb, developing a painting style with mythological content, simple flat shapes, and imagery inspired by primitive art. By mid-decade, his work incorporated Surrealist techniques and images. Peggy Guggenheim gave Rothko a solo show at Art of This Century in New York in 1945. In 1947 and 1949, Rothko taught at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, where

Rothko, Mark O
Pronunciation Key
Rothko, Mark , American painter, b. Russia. Rothko emigrated to the United States in 1913. He was a student of Max Weber , then came under the influence of the surrealists. In the mid-1940s Rothko experimented with abstraction, arranging intense colors in irregular shapes. Soon he was a leading exponent of color-field painting within the larger movement of abstract expressionism . His later works (e.g., No. 10, 1950; Mus. of Modern Art, New York City) frequently consist of floating rectangles of luminous color on enormous canvases that manage to convey sensuality and spirituality simultaneously. He collaborated with the architect Philip Johnson on the design of a chapel in Houston in the mid-1960s. Rothko committed suicide. See Mark Rothko: A Biography (1993) by J. E. B. Breslin; studies by D. Waldman (1978), D. Ashton (1983), and A. C. Chave (1989).

Breslin, James E. B. Mark Rothko A Biography . xii, 700 p., 21 color plates, 52 halftones. 6-5/8 x 9-3/8 1993 LC: 93014966 Class: ND237.R725 Cloth $45.00 0-226-07405-6 Fall 1993
Paper $27.50 0-226-07406-4 Spring 1998 A book of heroic dimensions, this is the first full-length biography of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth centurya man as fascinating, difficult, and compelling as the paintings he produced. Drawing on exclusive access to Mark Rothko's personal papers and over one hundred interviews with artists, patrons, and dealers, James Breslin tells the story of a life in artthe personal costs and professional triumphs, the convergence of genius and ego, culture and commerce, that defined the New York art scene of the 1930s, 40s, and 50sthe world of Abstract Expressionism, of Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, Klein. "In Breslin, Rothko has the ideal biographerthorough but never tedious, a good storyteller with an ear for the spoken word, fond but not fawning, and possessed of a most rare ability to comment on non-representational art without sounding preposterous."Robert Kiely, Boston Book Review "Breslin impressively recreates Mark Rothko's troubled nature, his tormented life, and his disturbing canvases. . . . The artist's paintings become almost tangible within Breslin's pages, and Rothko himself emerges as an alarming physical force."Robert Warde

In the 1940's Rothko work became influenced by surelism, but went into the nonobjective style that he is best known for. This style is known as the color-field branch of abstract expressionism. This style of painting is when an artist takes large, hazily defined rectangles of color and paints them on the canvas. He used anywhere from bright happy colors to dark murky colors to convey his emotions and a sense of spirituality. Red, Orange, Tan and Purple One of his most important late works is the Rotko Chapel. In this chapel, in Houston, Texas, he painted somber, contemplative murals. Rothko Chapel
