Blue Eden
A trio of long stories starring J. Edgar Hoover, with Ty Cobb in a featured role. It's all here in Luke Salisbury's latest book: From J. Edgar Hoover's favorite diner to Ty Cobb's favorite gun, with the Kennedy assassination in between. It's bigotry, baseball, and the murder mystery of the century. It's an author who brings a wonderful imagination and a wicked sense of irony to the panorama of 20th century history. The J. E. R. Chilton Galleries The Gilded Age: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum captures the brilliance of America’s “turn-of-the-century” society intent on equaling Europe’s much-admired culture. Mark Twain’s popular novel of 1873 described the Gilded Age as America’s “golden road to fortune.” The Gilded Age, more than any other time in America’s history, pointed to European ideals of aristocracy and patronage with a heretofore unknown collaboration between wealthy American patrons—some of the most important new tycoons on this side of the Atlantic—and artists—the most illustrious of the time, like Childe Hassam, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, , Albert Pinkham Ryder and Louis Comfort Tiffany. . From Winslow Homer’s depiction of the pounding surf in Maine, to John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Elizabeth Winthrop Chandler, The Gilded Age encompassed the masculine world of Theodore Roosevelt and the elegant drawing rooms found in Henry James’s novels. This exhibition includes 59 major works of painting and sculpture from the Smithsonian’s permanent collection, some that rarely travel, that illustrate a new current of sophistication in America. The Gilded Age is one of eight exhibitions in the Smithsonian’s

A traveling Museum Exhibition curated by Peter Selz
Circulated by Council for Creative Projects. "Nature is a teacher who never deceives."
- Albert Pinkham Ryder
In 1985, Tobi Kahn was one of nine artists whose work was selected for the Guggenheim Museum's national exhibition, New Horizons in American Art. In the decade that followed, Kahn's paintings and sculpture have been shown in over 20 solo exhibitions and over 60 museum and gallery group shows. His work has been acquired by major American museums and has been the subject of significant critical attention. Curated by Peter Selz, who has followed Kahn's work steadily since the Guggenheim show, this traveling museum exhibit brings together the paintings and sculpture of an artist who extends an American tradition the distillation of the natural world into elemental forms. Kahn's paintings are characterized by their powerful simplification; their alchemy of memory and dream; and their uneasy union of meditative tranquility and disturbing solitude. His acclaimed shrine series, devotional objects consisting of an architectural form surrounding a totemic image, range in scale from intimate maquettes to a bronze-and-stone outdoor sculpture (commissioned by Jane Owen and the Robert Lee Blaffer Trust for New Harmony, Indiana).
