www.mfa.org John Singer Sargent June 27 - September 26, 1999 J ohn Singer Sargent is the first comprehensive retrospective of one of the most admired painters (1856-1925) at the turn of the century since the memorial exhibitions that followed his death. This exhibition includes 160 of his greatest oils, watercolors, and studies for mural paintingssome never exhibited beforeand draws equally from his European and American careers. The showing at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) pays special attention to Sargent's work in Boston, the city he considered his American home. A year-long restoration of Sargent's famed murals in the MFA's Upper Rotunda and Stairwell the last decorative works the artist completed before his death will be finished for the exhibition's opening. While the scenes illustrate no single theme, many glorify the arts and the power of knowledge, and include representations of gods and heroes whose legends complement the mission of the Museum. Although Sargent had many clients in New York, Newport, Chicago, and elsewhere, he regarded Boston as the American city with which he had the strongest ties. Sargent's first solo exhibition anywhere was held in Boston in 1888; he returned to the city no less than eight times during the course of his career. As a result, many of his greatest works portraits, landscapes, figure studies, and watercolors are owned by the MFA, Harvard University, and other public and private collections in the area.

However, portraiture was only one aspect of the career of this remarkably gifted and prolific artist. John Singer Sargent , on view July 3 through September 26, 1999 at the Portland Museum of Art, features 28 works, including oils, watercolors, and drawings, that provide an overview of the full spectrum of Sargent's concerns and achievements as an artist. This exhibition, drawn from the Museum's permanent collection and several private collections, has been organized to coincide with a major retrospective of Sargent's work at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (right: Mrs. Henry St. John Smith, 1883, oil on canvas, 25 5/16 x 20 7/16 inches, Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Henry St. John Smith and children, 1986.65) Sargent was born in Florence, Italy, to American parents and was raised in cosmopolitan European society. His artistic talent revealed itself early, as evidenced by The Alps, Blumlisalp und Oschinensee

Although John Singer Sargent exhibited great facility and accomplishment with all subjects he painted, his reputation was achieved by portraiture. A United States citizen by birth, he remained an expatriate with a peripatetic existence,
residing in Italy, France, and London. His style was formed by exposure to international influences, extensive travel, and study of the Old Masters, in particular the noted portrait painters Diego Velazquez and Frans Hals, combined with natural facility and astute visual perception. Cosmopolitan internationalism, blended with mastery in rendering the likenesses of late Victorian and Edwardian society, led to a flourishing career, and he was inundated with portrait commissions from both continents. Sargent's style, at once traditional and revolutionary, provided a stylistic bridge in portraiture between eighteenth- century British masters, such as Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough, and
American portrait painting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Reviews Table of Contents The remarkable portraits for which John Singer Sargent is most famous are only one aspect of a career that included landscapes, watercolors, figure subjects, and murals. Even within portraiture, his style ranged from bold experiments to studied formality. And the subjects of his paintings were as varied as his styles, including the leaders of fashionable society, rural laborers, city streets, remote mountains, and the front lines of World War I. This beautiful book surveys and evaluates the extraordinary range of Sargent's work, and reproduces 150 of his paintings in color. It accompanies a spectacular international exhibitionthe first major retrospective of the artist's career since the memorial exhibitions that followed his death. Sargent (1856-1925) was a genuinely international figure. Born of American parents, he grew up in Europe and forged his early reputation in Paris. Later, he established himself in England and the United States as the leading portraitist of the day, and traveled widely in North Africa and the Middle East. Contributors to this book assess Sargent's career in three essays. Richard Ormond presents a biographical sketch and, in a second essay, reviews Sargent's development as an artist. Mary Crawford Volk explores his thirty-year involvement with painting muralsin particular the works at the Boston Public Library and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts that Sargent regarded as his greatest achievement.
