To celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in 1898, the London art and antiques dealer Asher Wertheimer asked John Singer Sargent to paint portraits of himself and his wife. The two pictures evolved into a series of twelve over the next decade, making this suite Sargent's largest portrait commission. During these ten years, Sargent was so preoccupied by the commission that he claimed, ironically, to be in a state of "chronic Wertheimerism." The artist developed close friendships with some of the Wertheimers, unusual for someone known for his reticence. Sargent dined with the family once a week at their home at 8 Connaught Place in London. Their dining room, which housed eight of the twelve portraits, was affectionately dubbed "Sargent's mess."
The child of an American expatriate family, John Singer Sargent was born in 1856 in Florence, Italy. He lived a peripatetic, if somewhat luxurious, existence in Europe with his parents, and ultimately moved to Paris to study art with the celebrated French master Carolus-Duran. Sargent's talents were quickly recognized in the French capital. However, his daring portrayal of the ravishing socialite Virginie Gautreaua painting subsequently known as Madame Xcaused a scandal when it was shown in the Paris Salon of 1884. This incident is cited frequently as the cause for the artist's move to London in 1886. Between that year and 1907, when Sargent stopped accepting portrait commissions, he had become an international star. Without a doubt, he was the most famous, sought-after, and expensive portrait painter in England and the United States.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT
AND WATERCOLOR
By Jim Salchak “To live with Sargent’s watercolors is to live with sunshine captured and held.” I did not really appreciate this statement written by Evan Charteris, Sargent’s friend and biographer, until I saw a group of them first hand. I had made arrangements with the Museum of Fine arts in Boston to see ten of Sargent’s watercolors. When I walked into the room where they were set up I was nearly bowled over. They were so fresh and full of light; they looked like they were painted the day before instead of nearly 90 years before. I still marvel at Sargent’s ability to paint an illusion of reality while still making the final effect look like paint.
Early Years
Sargent was born in 1856 to American parents in Florence, Italy. Although he always considered himself an American, he lived in Europe his entire life making only extended visits to the United States to work and visit family and friends. He grew up speaking four languages, was widely read, played the piano expertly, and acquired a passion for art and architecture. In 1874, at the age of eighteen, he was accepted as a student in the atelier of Carolous-Duran, a progressive portrait painter in Paris. Carolous-Duran taught an ala-prima approach to painting based on careful observation of tonal values. At the same time, Sargent enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to study drawing.

ON DISPLAY AT VIRGINIA MUSEUM Twelve Portraits of Wertheimer Family Members Have Not Been Shown Together for Some 70 Years
Through Oct 29, 2000
T he Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is exhibiting John Singer Sargent: Portraits of the Wertheimer Family . The exhibition presents 12 portraits reunited for the first time in more than 70 years. The exhibition was organized by The Jewish Museum, New York. In 1898 portrait artist John Singer Sargent began a lifelong friendship with prominent art dealer Asher Wertheimer of London. Wertheimer hired Sargent to paint portraits of him and his wife. The portraits spawned a series of 12, Sargent’s largest commission. For the next 10 years the artist became so involved with the commission that he claimed to be in a state of “chronic Wertheimerism.” Born in Florence, trained in Paris, headquartered in London and always on the road, John Singer Sargent remained an art-world outsider. A born observer, he was well equipped to act as the premier portrait artist during the turbulent changes taking place at the turn of the last century. His portraits act as windows into the lives of self-made families who dominated political, social and economic circles, according to Dr. David Park Curry, coordinator of the exhibition for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. At the time of the Wertheimer commission, Sargent was the most celebrated, sought-after and expensive portrait artist in the world. Wertheimer was among the wealthiest art dealers in England.

John Singer Sargent at SAM By Deloris Tarzan Ament The first major West Coast exhibition of John Singer Sargent's art takes center stage at the Seattle Art Museum December 14 through March 18, 2001. Sargent was the Mozart of painters, the genius to whom mastery came so easily that his competitors despised him for it. Trevor Fairbrother, SAM's curator of modern art, has a special love of Sargent, who was the subject of his doctoral dissertation at Boston University. "I wanted to make his tremendous gifts as tangible as possible in this show, to explore his sensuous appetite and his delight in all his eyes landed on," he said. To accomplish that, Fairbrother assembled a broad cross section of Sargent's work, on loan from nearly 20 museums and private collections. The show includes many of Sargent's rarely seen watercolors of everyday life in Venice and Florence, and a study for his scandalous portrait of "Madame X." The show is orchestrated from an opening gallery of drawings, through a series of informal portraits, (look especially for his painting of bemused author Robert Louis Stevenson in a big wicker chair), swelling to a crescendo with the heart of the show: a dozen portraits of the Wertheimer family, which show Sargent at the height of his powers.

The Artist:
John Singer sargent was one of the great turn of the century artists. A true cosmopolitan, he was born in Italy to American parents, trained in Paris and then moved to London. Sargent quickly won fame and fortune as a fashionable portrait painter on both sides of the Atlantic. His dazzling society portraits are at once flattering, penetrating and brilliantly executed. A friend of Monet, he also made an important contribution to the introduction of Impressionism to England. Bio text from the Tate Gallery, London More on the Artist:
Like many American painters, John Singer Sargent worked abroad, both in France and in England. His talent and ambition made him the premier portraitist of his era. Sargent was born on July 12, 1856. His parents were American, though he was born in Florence, Italy, and then moved to Paris, and then finally at the age of twenty to the United States. He displayed talent as a youth, and his father decided that he should work in the studio of Caolus-Duran, a Parisian portrait painter. Following that apprenticeship, Sargent went to Spain to study Velasquez' work. Sargent settled in Paris, was well received there and continued to focus on portraits. In 1884 he painted Virginie Avegno Gautreau, his most famous portrait. Judged too provocative by many French people, it caused a scandal, that persuaded him to move to London.

This exhibition included more than 150 of John Singer Sargent's greatest oils, drawings, and watercolors, and will draw equally from his European and American careers. Sargent, one of the late 19th century's most talented painters and the most sought-after portraitist of Edwardian England and America's Gilded Age, was equally admired as a landscapist and mural painter. In Boston, visitors were able to view Sargent's famed murals in the MFA's upper rotunda and stairwell; they were the last works the artist completed before his death. These scenes of mythological gods and heroes, whose restoration has just been completed, are always on view at the MFA.

John Singer Sargent
January 12, 1856, and died April 15, 1925. Sargent's mother introduced him to watercolor painting when he was a young boy. Besides providing him with the materials and encouraging him, she also taught him to "see" the world around him, pointing out interesting details. His family's constant travels from one area to another allowed him access to Europe's great museums and artwork and architecture. Although best known for his oil portraits, Sargent was also a "master" watercolorist. Watercolor was standard equipment for Sargent, and he appears to have begun concentrating on it beginning in 1902 or 1903. His mastery of the medium is evident in all his paintings. Sargent's palette consisted of six or seven colors and he "worked on damp paper, spreading washes of color to the edges of the paper and using Chinese white and the white paper to create highlights".

Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)
John Singer Sargent is known for his dazling and often daring portraits portraits of British and American high society at the turn of the century. Most of his best known works are glamorous portraits of eminent or socially prominent people of the period and helped to shape our view of the era. The elegance and often arrogance of the rich and famous were brilliantly displayed. Sargent was not a social critic. He simply portayed the rich and famous as he saw them. If the true portrait artist's job is to reveal the inner soul, then John Singer Sargent has certainly earned a prestigious place in the pantheon of great artists.
Boyhood
Sargent was born in Florence, Italy, during 1856 to expatriate American parents. That same year France's Napoleon III was presented his only child, the Prince Imperiel Eugene. It was a period of expectation. The Crimean War had ended. America was about to explode in Civil War. Italy had not yet been unified. Prussia had not yet unified Germany. However Europe armed with a never ending series of industrial developments was laying the foundation for the new industrial era. Photography was rapidly improving making portrature available to the common man.
John's parents were extreme Europhile Americans. His father was a New England doctor. His mother was a clinging woman, constantly complaining of fatigue, aches and depression. She looked down on what she saw as the crude culture of America. The family was not wealthy, but they moved throughout Europe. They moved with ease and often, The young John did not put down roots in any one country. They lived in Rome, Paris, Nice, Munich, Venice, the Austrian Tyrol until their son's was 18 years old. Everywhere it seems except America.
