Kurt Schwitters (1887 - 1948)
"The ambition was Expressionist, the means Constructivist, the results - largly Dadaist"
Kurt Schwitters was born in Hannover in 1887, the son of a well off boutique owner. His families borgeois standing was strenthened by his fathers miserly conduct - a trait inherited by Kurt who proudly never spent a penny on his wife's clothes.
From 1909-14 he attended the Dresden art school where he began his artistic career painting slavishly naturalistic pictures. His academic work was conventional and unadventurous although he did write a dissertation on abstract art (now lost).
In later life Schwitters put his artistic development into handy, discreet, pocket sized catagories:-
1909-14 - Academic Painting
1914-17 - Impressionism
1917 - Expressionism
1917-18 - Abstraction
1918 -48 - Merz Kurt Schwitters was the odd man out of Dada - not officially a dadaist but still vital to the dada movement. In 1918 he made visits to Berlin where he became friends with Arp and Hausmann. Then one night in a cafe he approached Tristan Tzara and Hans Richter:
"My name is Kurt Schwitters...I am a painter and I nail my pictures together...I should like to join the Club Dada"

In 1917, he painted his first abstract pictures and in 1918 saw the birth of his famous collage technique "Merz." In autumn 1921, Kurt Schwitters travelled to Prague, together with Raoul Hausmann, Hannah H6ch and his wife. On September 1, at the "Commodity Exchange Hall", Raoul Hausmann performed his phonetic poem beginning with the line "fmsbwtazdu", which served as an impetus for Schwitters' Ursonate. It was not until 1926 that the sonata achieved the form in which it was published in 1932. The final version, however, developed by way of innumerable performances given by Schwitters between 1926 and 1932. Comments on my Ursonate Kurt Schwitters The sonata consists of four movements, an introduction, an end, and a cadence in the fourth movement. The first movement is a rondo with four motifs, which are especially indicated in this text of the sonata. It is rhythm, strong and weak, loud and silent, dense and spacious, etc. I do not want to explain the delicate variations and compositions of the themes ...

John Ruskin [ Kurt Schwitters ] Josefina de Vasconcellos Charles Walmsley Fred Yates ‘We keep right on playing until death comes for us,” Schwitters said. “I have so little time.” Kurt Schwitters was known to his acquaintances in Ambleside as a kind and eccentric artist, most were completely unaware of his tremendous influence on 20th Century art. Fleeing from persecution by Hitler's Reich, Schwitters was interned as an "Enemy Alien", lived in London after his release and then spent his last years in Ambleside a poor, sick, virtually unknown refugee Although little known at the time, he is our most famous "local" artist.

DACS 2003 Why modern or abstract artists felt it necessary to leave Germany can be readily understood with Hitler's demonstration of "true German art" versus "degenerate, Bolshevik and Jewish art". Hitler arranged an art exhibition in Munich, called "Entartete Kunst", the infamous 1937 "Degenerate Art" exhibition, which toured Germany and was viewed with mixed reactions by over 3 million visitors. Paintings by the insane were mixed amongst those by modern German artists [including Schwitters] for ridicule. Hitler had already threatened them in 1935: "One will no longer discuss or deal with these corruptors of art. They are fools, liars, or criminals who belong in insane asylums or prisons". It was in this deteriorating climate that Kurt Schwitters and his son Ernst left Germany for Norway and, subsequently, England.

W.C Fields

Kurt Schwitters is generally acknowledged as the twentieth century's greatest master of collage. Just as collage is essentially the medium of irony, so Schwitters' life is characterized by paradox and enigma. Born in Hanover, the only child of affluent parents, he was a loner in his youth, plagued by epileptic attacks, introverted and insecure, and as a student at the Dresden Academy of Art he proved as apt as he was unimaginative. Although his contact with Expressionist artists in Hannover in 1916 gave him more confidence to develop his own style, even his most impressive works (such as Mountain Graveyard ) were little more than imitations of his contemporaries.
