STANLEY SPENCER HOME PAGE Welcome to the Stanley Spencer Web Site. This site is intended as an academic resource for students and others who wish to study Spencer's work. It contains a bibliography and a separate page with comments on the usefulness (or otherwise) of the more important books concerned with Spencer. There is also a chronology of his life to enable those unfamiliar with his work to get some idea of how his ideas developed. I've also included a short guide to the more important collections of his work and a quick look at relevant news items. This site arose out of my studies at Birkbeck College, London University. Having been an admirer of his work for more than 20 years it seemed a good idea to use him as the subject of my dissertation. In view of his place as one of Britain's most important 20th century artists I was surprised to find he didn't have a dedicated Web site. Which is why this site was created. Fortunately Spencer's biographer Ken Pople has now launched his own site. You'll find a link in the 'Important Collections' and 'News' sections. I would welcome contributions from anyone with an interest in exploring Spencer's work. I'm particularly interested in the psychological aspects of the paintings. He had such a complex mind that I find it difficult to really grasp his psychology, perhaps someone with expertise in this field would like to contribute their thoughts on him. If you have any comments or wish to contribute, especially to the news page, E-mail me. All contributors will receive

Tate Britian

London, , UK United Kingdom
Stanley Spencer is one of the dominant figures of twentieth-century British art. This major exhibition will bring together over one hundred of his paintings and drawings from private and public collections around the world. It aims to present a concise retrospective of one of Britain's best-loved painters, with emphasis on the particularly intense period of the 1930s. The exhibition will include a strong selection of the great, well-known works, but also many less familiar works, which have never been seen before. In addition there will be two specially made films; the first presenting the murals in the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere, the second a digital recreation of the Church-House project, Spencer's imagined space for much of his later work. Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was an outstanding student at the Slade School of Art in London, and the first section of the exhibition is devoted to his early work reflecting the dual influence of Giotto and Gauguin. This early flowering culminates in masterpieces such as The Nativity (1912, University College London) and Zacharias and Elizabeth (1914, recently purchased jointly by Tate and Sheffield City Art Gallery); in both a biblical theme is embedded within the landscape of the Berkshire village of Cookham where he grew up and lived for much of his life.

"Stanley Spencer," Mar. 22-June 24, 2001, at Tate Britain, Milbank, London SW1P 4R6 England.
Perhaps jealous of the attention received by its new sibling across the water, Tate Britain has opened what is considered an assured crowd-pleaser for British art lovers a retrospective of the early modernist painter, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). Critic Simon Jenkins of the Times of London, for one, cooed over the late artist's heartfelt narratives. Spencer's previous retrospectives (at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., in 1997 and at the Royal Academy in London in 1980) amply demonstrated his religious fervor in images of his hometown of Cookham, the compassion he felt for his fellow residents and his quirky romantic and sexual obsessions. Spencer has frequently come across as a quaint village innocent, inextricably tied to small-town England. Forgotten has been the shock and controversy that his works originally provoked. In this new retrospective, however, Spencer's work appears more stylistically avant-garde than ever before. Spencer's early work is a synthesis of French Post-Impressionism and early Italian painting typified by Giotto. Spencer was a key member of the "Neo-Primitive" group, allied with David Bomberg, William Roberts and other young artists at the Slade College of Art.

Reviews
Stanley Spencer's extreme combination of the homely and the weird has baffled viewers of his paintings. In this book, MacCarthy investigates Spencer's life, sets his work in its cultural context, and emphasizes the links between his life and his paintings. This volume provides a comprehensive account of a profoundly original artist and his work. This book is the catalogue for an exhibit opening at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington on October 8, 1997, and later traveling to Chicago and San Francisco. "With extensive commentary on sixty beautiful reproductions of Spencer's paintings, this volume provides a comprehensive account of the work of a profoundly original artist." Apollo Magazine "Fiona MacCarthy's excellent text, which emphasizes biographical links with the art, supplements the 1992 complete-paintings catalogue by Keith Bell, providing a humane introduction to the disordered life of a bizarrely original artist."Alan G. Artner, Chicago Tribune "[MacCarthy's] essay is outstanding in its subtle flow of observation, feeling and thought."Frances Spalding

STANLEY SPENCER Love, desire, Faith
19 June - 5 October 2002 Click here for catalogue The main summer exhibition this year focused on the paintings and drawings of one of the most extraordinary and best-loved British artists of the twentieth century. Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) is well known for his mysterious and visionary images of biblical scenes, intensely observed landscape paintings and brutally realistic and intimate portraits of the people he knew and loved. Spencer's paintings are very personal and his imagery is strange and fantastic, combining the real and the imaginary. Throughout his life he developed a unique vision, which explored his inner feelings towards religion and sexuality centred on his own life and relationships. The exhibition included a carefully selected group of paintings and drawings, which demonstrated Spencer's unique vision and his ideas. This exhibition was organised in collaboration with Tate as part of the Tate Partnership Scheme.

ANALYSIS OF STANLEY SPENCER'S RESURRECTION
BY
JUDITH WHITTET
The Resurrection (1924-6) Artist: Stanley Spencer (b. 1891 - d. 1959)
2.7 x 5.5 m. Oil on canvas (also called The Cookham Resurrection) (Click on image for larger details)
Most of the artist, Stanley Spencer's figurative paintings are loaded with private mythologies and this painting is no exception. Just about every mark on the canvas has some sort of significance and obviously it would take far too long to try and interpret them all. Briefly, Spencer has set his 'Resurrection' in the churchyard at Cookham, Berkshire, England, where he was born and grew up and which remained the centre of the universe for the painter all his days. The river Thames is in the background. There is a boat with holiday makers on it - this was apparently a regular event in Cookham during the summer months. [ note 1
I am going to focus on the three main characters in this painting. They are Stanley Spencer the artist himself, his wife Hilda (who he married during the execution of this painting, in 1925) and Richard Carline, Spencer's friend and brother-in-law (that is Hilda's brother - both Hilda and Richard were also artists). Each character appears more than once in different guises.
Spencer has chosen his beloved home town to play out this Resurrection, people emerging from their graves to the heavenly paradise, Cookham. In such a transformation, the Thames becomes the river Styx and the holiday makers, the spirits of the dead. The painting is separated into three sections with the right side being predominantly Stanley's and focussing on his past life. The left side seems to be Hilda's and looks to the future, while the centre of the painting is in the present, the awakening to a new life. Richard who plays a lesser role, appears throughout.
