Table of Contents One of the most highly regarded and well known of all twentieth-century British artists, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) is famous for two things. He immortalized the Berkshire village of Cookham, where he was born and spent most of his life. And he celebrated sex both on his canvases and through his unconventional understanding of relationships. Perhaps best known for his paintings of biblical subjects set in and around Cookhamin particular, The Resurrection, Cookham Spencer was also an official war artist during both World Wars. In his paintings and in his life, he reveled in the intense ordinariness of the world he inhabited. His mature art fuses things most often thought of as separate: religion and sex, the real and the imaginary, public and private, the young and the old, the self and others. In this excellent introduction to the artist and his work, Kitty Hauser reveals how Spencer's art grew out of places, experiences, and social relations that enriched his imagination. Though Spencer is often described as visionary, this book shows that his brand of mysticism was firmly grounded in material realityin landscapes, homes, and the human relationships he felt so strongly. Kitty Hauser is an art historian whose work has been published widely, including in the

Stanley Spencer Gallery
The Stanley Spencer Gallery is unique, being the only gallery in Britain devoted exclusively to an artist in the village where he was born and spent most of his life. Spencer was strongly influenced by the river and his religious beliefs, and the gallery occupies the former Victorian Methodist Chapel where Spencer was taken as a child to worship. The gallery has a permanent collection of his work, including the unfinished masterpiece “Christ Preaching at Cookham”, together with letters, documents and memorabilia.
The gallery shop stocks books, facsimile drawings, colour reproductions and postcards.
Spencer’s Slade Contemporaries
The Spencer gallery’s new Summer Exhibition (29th March to 31st October) will include paintings by some artists who studied at the Slade with Spencer or shortly afterwards. Spencer, who was at the Slade from 1908 to 1912, won prizes and was nicknamed “Cookham”. Professor Tonks, his mentor, regarded Spencer as “having the most original mind of anyone we have had at the Slade”. The exhibition will display Barges (1919) by David Bomberg, a leader of the avant-garde movement; Dance Hall Scene (1913-14), a typical futurist image by Christopher Nevinson; The Cockatoos (1958) by William Roberts who was associated with the Vorticists; and Oxenbridge Pond (1928) by Paul Nash which shows the influence of Cezanne and the early Cubists.

49. Stanley Spencer
Here in London is further confirmation at Tate Britain that stanley Spencerwas a worldclass painter, yet of a particularly English conformation.
http://www.studio-international.co.uk/reports/spencers.htm
Stanley Spencer Tate Britain through 24 June 2001 oeuvre . In the Tate Britain exhibition the medium of film is used to convey the achievement at Burghclere, and yet can scarcely convey this. Possibly, improved technology in virtual reality will one day enable such problems caused by the immobility of the Burghclere works to be overcome. Spencer had set about creating in large, squared canvas panels the full series. For the largest of these, Spencer was only able to locate suitably large looms in Belgium. Unfortunately the gluing of these to the walls was also fraught with problems, not least in retrospect being the use of asbestos as a basis for fixing. Into this great series Spencer had woven all his memories of wartime service, both in Salonika and in England. The works stand today as a major tribute, worthy of major recognition as against the apparent obscurity into which the Burghclere Chapel has recessed. The ultimate lesson, too, is that when Spencer's own simple religious faith was in play he conceived his greatest works. This is well evident at Tate Britain currently. Stanley Spencer is at Tate Modern through 24 June.

  • Students may be unfamiliar with the content of the painting. With the aim of developing their skills of visual literacy, allow them space to try and work out what is happening in the picture. Discussions about who the characters might be, or what significance the objects might have, may be appropriate. There is a lot of room for speculation here.
  • Older students could be asked to think about the original context of the painting. For example, what sort of audience the picture was painted for, or where it might have been hung.

Sins of the flesh
Stanley Spencer may have found Christ in Cookham, but his soul knew little peace, says Jonathan Glancey
Tuesday March 20, 2001 The Guardian In 1974, when Stanley Spencer's reputation was pretty much at its nadir, the Tate bought the painter's curious "leg of mutton" portrait, a study in oils of a bespectacled yet otherwise naked Spencer hunkered down beside his wife, Patricia, spread-eagled on an old stripy bed in a rather uncomfortable post-coital moment. A joint of meat looks horribly raw in the foreground. The Tate still owns the work (Double Nude Portrait: the Artist and His Second Wife, 1937) and it's in Tate Britain's latest show. This gutsy reappraisal of this long-mocked English painter - set in a near-monastic setting designed by architect Claudio Silvestrin - attempts to elevate Spencer to the status of a Balthus, a Dix, or a Hopper. Maybe curators Patrick Wright and Timothy Hyman are right. Yet the "leg of mutton" portrait and the worst of Spencer's Cookham landscapes suggest he hovers awkwardly between the world of prewar London Transport posters, English whimsy, folksy religious sentiment and an embarrassingly immature attitude towards sex.

The rehabilitation of British artist Stanley Spencer
By Paul Mitchell 20 September 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The work of British artist Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) has undergone a resurgence of interest in the art world recently. Long viewed by some as a provincial joke, several artists and critics now claim Spencer was the greatest British artist of the twentieth century. Christ carrying the Cross down Cookham High Street Spencer grew to maturity at a turbulent period in history. Far-reaching social and scientific changes challenged previous ideas about the nature of man and his relationship to the world. It produced considerable intellectual and political shifts, epitomized in the growth of the international socialist movement at one pole and the cultivation of nationalism and imperialist militarism at the other. Ferment in artistic circles took the form of a fight against tradition, philistinism and sentimental romanticism. John Donne Arriving In Heaven Apple Gatherers In Zacharias and Elizabeth (1913-14) Shortly before he was called up for military service he painted a beautiful Self-Portrait , the light effects being reminiscent of Caravaggio.

Sir Stanley Spencer
Born: 30th June 1891 at Cookham, Berkshire
Artist
Died 14th December 1959
at Cliveden, Buckinghamshire
Stanley was the eighth surviving child of William Spencer, a music teacher, and his wife, Anne. He was born in a semi-detached Victorian house halfway along the High Street in Cookham , on the that day a crow fell down its chimney and flapped about the living room until released. The family thought it a good omen and named him after Stanley Spencer, a prominent balloonist of the era. He obtained his educated at a school run by his sisters before entering Maidenhead Technical College where his artistic training began. His first been art lessons were from Dorothy Bailey. At seventeen, Stanley entered the Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London and, there, he won the Composition Prize for ‘The Nativity’ (1912). Stanley joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) at the outbreak of the First World War. He worked, for a while, at the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol before being sent, in August 1916, to Salonika - a Macedonian port defended by the British & the French under General Sarrail - as part of the 68th Field Ambulancemen. He transferred to an infantry unit in August 1917. In May the following year, Stanley was asked to contribute artistically to the government planned Hall of Remembrance. He was to "to paint a picture under such title as ‘A Religious Service at the Front,’ or any subjects in or about Salonika". However, work on Stanley’s most famous war painting, ‘Travoys arriving with Wounded at a Dressing Station at Smol, Macedonia (September 1916),’ did not begin until after the Armistice.
