Stanley Spencer, English Visionary, CDS Gallery (1983)
Englishman Stanley Spencer, whose paintings and drawings are on exhibit at the CDS Gallery, 13 E. 75th through May 28, is perhaps one of the most original artists of the century, if not always the most consistent. Essentially a mystical, religious painter, quirky, eccentric, but undeniably intense and genuine, his work expresses a nearly boundless energy, an extraordinary gift for compositional invention and depth of content, and an absolute sincerity, inevitability of vision and total commitment to art. Spencer seems utterly fearless in his openness to life and creative attack upon the canvas, in contradistinction to so many modernists and contemporaries of established reputation who, seemingly terrified by life and living art, appear hemmed in behind barricades of deadly, narrowing theory like so many wagon-trains encircled against imaginary indians. Spencer is not a painter easily understood on first viewing. He is a man and artist of many apparent contradictions, at once innocent and worldly, spiritual and sexual, realistic and primitive, hopeful and despondent, eclectic and very, very original.

Sir Stanley Spencer Stands Alone
Sir Stanley Spencer was not merely an eccentric English oddity, but a major artist who linked thematically and stylistically to his era and so captured the changing nature of the times and places within which he lived. Meridian Masterpiece looks at the life and work of one of the masters of 20th century British art. To listen to the programme, please click here Eccentricities His work equally defied convention. During his commission for the World War II Shipbuilding On The Clyde series of paintings he reportedly sketched on long lengths of toilet paper. His painting, now heralded by the British art fraternity, was not always so warmly received. His tendency to combine biblical themes with contemporary situations shocked audiences, who failed to share his view of Cookham as the New Jerusalem. And despite being something of a late sexual developer, Spencer made up for lost time, shocking audiences with nude portraits of his two wives. Marriage His private life was unconventional and his emotional state was to have a profound impact on his work.

Shipbuilding on the Clyde Sir Stanley Spencer, Imperial War Museum 152cm x 107cm, oil on canvas The men featured are using arc welding, using electricity instead of gas The portraits highlight the teamwork and skills of the workforce Welders Spencer’s drawings show a fascination with the components and machinery or the yards and the skill of the workers manipulating them. The paintings combine these elements into a vision of co-ordinated team work. In Welders, the second of the panels to be commissioned, the men are occupied with arc welding, using electricity rather than gas. It was significantly less labour intensive than riveting, each man is working alone, and also required less physical strength allowing women to replace men recruited for the armed forces. Although Spencer made studies of women workers they were not included in the final canvas. Spencer’s shipyard has no hint of conflict, the labour force exudes contentment and satisfaction. In fact, in what sense is this a war painting at all? Spencer describes an egalitarian working environment (his workers are fictitiously dressed in identical Harris tweed), built around technology but driven by co-operation and co-ordination that seems to be challenging the social order - foremen are excluded all together. This was a pattern repeated in the political changes that emerged during the war, expressed in the Labour’s landslide victory in the 1945 election and in the need to create a vision of a new society.

The Art of Stanley Spencer The village of Cookham, 30 miles west of London, lies along the river Thames in a bucolic setting of marsh meadows, bridges and reedy riverbanks. It was here that British artist Stanley Spencer was born in 1891, and it was here that he lived until his death in 1959. It was here, too, that the celebrated visionary absorbed the ideas and images that would lead him to create some of the most impassioned and astonishingly original paintings of this century. A major exhibition of Spencer's work has recently begun a three city tour at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. On view there through January 11, 1998, the show features biblical and allegorical works, domestic scenes, nudes and landscapes that span five decades of the artist's career, starting with the 1914 self portrait. "Spencer produced some of this century's most powerful representations of the figure," says Hirshhorn director James Demetrion. "His vision is unique in 20th century art." By Diane M. Bolz For more information on this topic, see our

Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was the major British painter of the period between the two World Wars and one of the key British painters of the century, but his work is barely known in the United States. Few of his paintings have made their way into American permanent collectionsI counted only two in the extensive exhibition now on view at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Spencer's workfigurative, regional, allegorical, religious, and just plain weirdfits uneasily into the isms of 20 th -century art. To an American eye, Spencer's paintings at first glance resemble those of Thomas Hart Benton (born two years before Spencer) in their often monumental and mural-like style, but they are richer, kinkier, and more idiosyncratic than anything Benton did.

Born in 1891 Spencer was a wildly original painter and he died in 1959, a controversial figure whose life, like his paintings, was often misunderstood. This book allows the rader to assess, often from Stanley and Hilda Spencer's intense styles of writing, and from the recollections of his friends, how this extraordinary man lived. With 23 plates/illustrations in monochrome. 151 pages including appendices.

Robert Fulford's column about Stanley Spencer
The National Post , October 23, 2001) For much of his life, the British art world couldn't decide whether Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was a village simpleton or a neo-primitive genius. His paintings looked gawky and eccentric, as if he was pretending to be a folk artist. So far as you could tell from his work, he knew nothing of Matisse, Picasso and the rest of modern art. In fact, he was stylistically his own man more so than any other prominent painter in England. He had ideas of his own, too. No one else ever spent so much time trying to prove that Christianity and sex are more or less the same thing. He was knighted just before he died, but soon pretty much forgotten. Then, around 1980, England rediscovered him with sumptuous exhibitions and books. Now, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto has a rich, fascinating survey of his art, which runs till Dec. 16. It represents him in all his glory and misery. Spencer's contemporaries recognized his unusual talent during his student days at the Slade School in London. The Bloomsbury set took to him and Roger Fry put him into a 1912 post-impressionist exhibition. Spencer wasn't surprised. Then, as later, his ego was strangely open, almost innocent: He said, "The most interesting thing I ever came across is myself." As his national reputation grew, his sensibility turned uniquely local. He focused his work on Cookham, the Berkshire village where he grew up. He painted its scruffy backyards, its messy bedrooms, its humble gardens. He developed a way of intensifying the visual power of everyday subjects, as if to say: You might think all this ordinary; I consider it sacred.
