John Melhuish Strudwick, 1849-1937: An Overview
Biography
Strudwick was one of the most accomplished of Burne-Jones's followers. He painted some thirty paintings of legendary and symbolic subjects with a lapidary technique and a style that derives from the Italian quattrocento. Despite this, he never visited Italy. His final artistic statement was the painting ' When Sorrow comes in Summer Days ', which remained in the artist's family until 1983, and which Strudwick deliberately left unfinished (personal communication from the owners of the painting [the artist's family] to Peter Nahum, circa 1978). This gesture, together with the title, reflects the disillusionment he felt. In 1891 he was the subject of an article by George Bernard Shaw in the Art Journal (pages 97-101). At this date Shaw was only known as a critic is first play was produced the following year. Strudwick's works have also appeared in recent mixed exhibitions, notably at the Last Romantics (Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1989). However no modern study of his work has yet appeared. Strudwick was an unsuccessful student at the Royal Academy until he met Burne-Jones and became his studio assistant. Like Burne-Jones, Strudwick created essentially decorative works; unlike Burne-Jones, Strudwick drew impeccably, with architectural precision of detail; however, according to art critics, Strudwick had very little real understanding of the significance of the myths and legends he based his work on. George Bernard Shaw wondered how the "sordid" 19th century could produce such dreamy art; Henry James complained that Strudwick's art was "the art of culture, of reflection, of intellectual luxury, of aesthetic refinement, of people who look at the world not directly, as it were, but in the reflection and ornamental portrait of it furnished by art itself." Perhaps that's why the Lady of Shalott was such a popular theme? John Malhuish Strudwick Isabella and the Pot of Basil , tempera and gold paint on canvas, 1879. JOHN MELHUISH STRUDWICK
Strudwick worked as a studio assistant to both Spencer Stanhope and Burne-Jones and his style reflects the influence of both. His subjects are usually poetic and allegorical. He was an admirer of Italian Renaissance painting and his pictures reflect this. One of the first writers on Strudwick's work was the young Bernard Shaw who wrote an article about him in 1891 praising his transcendent expressiveness'.

John Strudwick began his artistic career as a studio assistant to Edward Burne-Jones. Initially, Strudwick enjoyed the patronage of wealthy industrialists but his career went into decline when they withdrew their support. He deliberately left his painting 'When Sorrow comes in Summer Days, Roses Bloom in Vain' unfinished - an indication of the disillusionment he felt at the collapse of his career. He painted in a flat linear style, with great attention to detail, especially in the draperies and accessories, using rich and glowing colours. The effect is sometimes rather lifeless and static, but always highly decorative. George Bernard Shaw wrote an article about Strudwick for the Art Journal in 1891. An excerpt follows: ... transcendent expressiveness is the moving quality in all Strudwick's works and persons who are sensitive to it will take almost as a matter of course the charm of the architecture, the bits of landscape, the elaborately beautiful foliage, the ornamental accessories of all sorts, which would distinguish them even in a gallery of early Italian paintings....

John Melhuish Strudwick (1849-1935)
An important late Pre-Raphaelite painter, Strudwick was born in Clapham and studied art at South Kensington and at the RA Schools, where he was not particularly successful, but received encouragement from the distinguished Scottish painter John Pettie. He worked as studio assistant first to Spencer Stanhope, and then to Edward Burne-Jones , which firmly established him in the Pre-Raphaelite mould. His first (and only) picture at the Royal Academy, Song without Words (1876) was already completely Pre-Raph. From the following year he exhibited at the Grosvenor, and later at the new Gallery. He lived in Hammersmith, close to Burne-Jones and T. M. Rooke , another studio assistant of Burne-Jones. He married (Harriet Reed) and had a single daughter. Many of Strudwick's paintings have music as a central theme, for example When Apples were Golden (1906). He favoured rich, deep colours, Burne-Jones type faces and complex drapery. His angels are particularly entrancing. There is also an Italianate look to much of his work, despite his never having visited Italy, and this may be ascribed to the influence of Spencer Stanhope. Strudwick was fortunate in acquiring two extremely rich patrons - the Liverpool shipowners, William Imrie and George Holt. Sudley Art Gallery, under the direction of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, was the former home of George Holt, and several of Strudwick's paintings can be seen there, including

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
Britain, 1848 to Late 19th Century
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was created in 1848 by seven artists: Dante Gabriel Rossetti , William Michael Rossetti, William Holman Hunt James Collinson John Everett Millais Frederic George Stephens , and Thomas Woolner. Their goal was to develop a naturalistic style of art, throwing away the rules and conventions drilled into students' heads at the Academies. Raphael was the artist considered to have attained the highest degree of perfection, so much so that students were encouraged to draw from his examples rather than from nature itself; thus they became the "Pre-Raphaelites".
The group popularized a theatrically romantic style, marked by great beauty, an intricate realism, and a fondness for Greek and Arthurian legend.
The movement itself did not last past the 1850's but the style remained popular for decades, and influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement , the Symbolists , and even the Classicists

John Melhuish STRUDWICK
Biography
1849, Clapham, London – 16 July 1937 Strudwick studied at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools. He received encouragement from the Scottish artist, John Pettie. The influence of the older artist is evident in Auld Robin Gray (c.1873). In the early 1870s he was employed as a studio assistant to Spencer Stanhope and then Burne-Jones As with Burne-Jones he painted mythological, Arthurian and allegorical works. But Strudwick evolved a very personal and decorative Pre-Raphaelite style – flat, highly detailed, rich and glowing in colour. If they were to be faulted, it would be for their static and impersonal nature. Strudwick was an admirer of Italian Renaissance painting, though he admitted to George Bernard Shaw in 1891 that he had never visited Italy. Songs without Words (Private Collection) was his one and only exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1876. Strudwick frequently attached poetic titles to his works and music was a recurrent theme e.g.
