HUGO VAN DER GOES
This Flemish painter started working in Gand, Belgium, where he was born in 1440, and where he probably happened to see the work of Italian painters, taken there on commission by rich bankers, because he showed great skill in the use of perspective. Most of his pictures are now in other countries: the "Adoration of the Magi" and the "Adoration of the Shepherds" at the State Museum in Berlin, the "Dormitio Virginis" at the City Museum in Bruges, the "Portrait of a man" and some "Virgin" paintings at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. His most famous work, the "Portinari Triptych" (1479), is at the Uffizi. It was created on commission for the rich Florentine banker who owned several estates in northern Europe. Van der Goes died in Rouge Cloitre near Brussels in 1482. Return to Room Index

Hugo van der Goes
Hugo van der Goes (1435-1482), the Flemish painter, occupies an important position in the century-long transition between medievalism and humanism, which occurred in Northern European art between 1425 and 1525. Van der Goes explored the possibilities of portraying religious intensity through expressions of individual feeling - gestures and facial expressions - and far surpassed his predecessors in his ability to portray psychological complexities. Van der Goes's early life is obscure, but in 1467 he was accepted as a master in the painters guild of Ghent. The paintings attributed to him from this time until 1474, when he painted his best-known work, “The Portinari Altarpiece” (Uffizi, Florence), were in the decorative, narrative Gothic style. In the Portinari Altarpiece, however, he introduced a distinction between the intellectual abstraction of the angels, which he painted in the Gothic style, and the human emotions exhibited by Saint Joseph, Mary, and the shepherdsthe apprehensive Joseph; the sorrowing Mary; and the awestruck and wondering shepherds. The altarpiece was commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, an Italian banker living in Bruges, for the Florentine church of San Egidio; its Italian destination was acknowledged by the inclusion of pieces of Italian majolica and Venetian glass in the foreground of the painting. It was enthusiastically received by contemporary Florentine painters, particularly Domenico Ghirlandaio, who borrowed Van der Goes's shepherds for his “Adoration of the Shepherds” (1485, Santa Trinita, Florence).

Hugo Van Der Goes View Art Work Hugo Van Der Goes was a late 15th century Flemish painter. His birthdate is not known, although some feel it was around 1440. Any information we have about him is subjugated to the last 15 years of his life. It is believed that he was born in Ghent as he entered the guild there in 1467. In 1475 he entered an Augustinian monastery (Roode Clooster) as a lay-person. It was located near Brussels. Van Der Goes had many patrons including Emperor Maximillian; unfortunately, none of his paintings are signed. The only one documented is a triptych of the Nativity known as the Portinari Altarpiece (1475-76). It was commissioned for the church of the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. In 1481 the artist went on a pilgrimage to Cologne. After that he suffered a mental breakdown. His painting ceased and he died the next year. The history of Ghent as an art center ended then. The distress Van Der Goes went through during his last years can be seen in many of his works. Besides being intensely emotional, they are known for their grandiosity, detail, and luminous color - similar to that of another Netherlandish master, Jan van Eyck. Much of this style's influence is evident in works by the German painter Hans Memling. Other works attributed to Van Der Goes include Adoration of the Shepherds and The Fall of Man

Goes, Hugo van der (d. 1482). The greatest Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century. Nothing is known of his life before 1467, when he became a master in the painters' guild at Ghent. He had numerous commissions from the town of Ghent for work of a temporary nature such as processional banners, and in 1475 he became dean of the painters' guild. In the same year he entered a priory near Brussels as a lay-brother, but he continued to paint and also to travel. In 1481 he suffered a mental breakdown (he had a tendency to acute depression) and although he recovered, died the following year. An account of his illness by Gaspar Ofhuys, a monk at the priory, survives; Ofhuys was apparently jealous of Hugo and his description has been called by Erwin Panofsky `a masterpiece of clinical accuracy and sanctimonious malice'. No paintings by Hugo are signed and his only securely documented work is his masterpiece, a large triptych of the Nativity known as the Portinari Altarpiece (Uffizi, Florence, c.1475-76). This was commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, the representative of the House of Medici in Bruges, for the church of the Hospital of Sta Maria Nuova in Florence, and it exercised a strong influence on Italian painters with its masterful handling of the oil technique. There is a great variety of surface ornament and detail, but this is combined with lucid organization of the figure groups and a convincing sense of spatial depth. As remarkable as Hugo's skill in reconciling grandeur of conception with keep observation is his psychological penetration in the depiction of individual figures, notably the awe-struck shepherds. The other works attributed to Hugo include two large panels probably designed as organ shutters (Royal collection, on loan to National Gallery of Scotland).

(c.1440/1445- 1482) Hugo van der Goes, alongside the somewhat younger Hieronymus Bosch , is the most important Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century. Little is known about his life, and his artistic origins are also unclear. Records from 1480 state him as being born in Ghent. Since he was granted the title of master painter in Ghent in 1467, he must have been born around 1440-1445. As early as 1477, he gave up his workshop and became a lay brother at the Red Monastery near Brussels, where he died in 1482 after a severe mental illness.
The Portinari Altar
(1476-78) is his only authenticated surviving work, around which others can nevertheless be grouped with some certainty: Monforte Altar The Fall of Adam , one of his earliest surviving works, and several others. Hugo van der Goes occupies a unique position in painting history because of his insight into character and class and through his intensely observant, almost surreal, rendering of nature and space. Hugo’s Portinari Altar, which was erected in Florence in 1478, exercised a revolutionary influence upon Florentine painting; it was felt by many of the Florence painters and is reflected in particular in the works of Ghirlandaio Filippino Lippi , and Leonardo da Vinci
