Van der Goes verwierf zijn meesterstitel in Gent in 1467. Hij is slechts korte tijd werkzaam in deze stad, want in 1468 schildert hij aan het hof in Brugge voor Karel de Stoute. Omstreeks 1474 maakt hij een reis naar Keulen en twee jaar later is hij in Florence, waar hij zijn beroemde Portinari-altaarstuk schildert.
