inv. 1900 - D The subject of Jupiter and Antiope , a youthful work by Anthony van Dyck (1599 - 1641), had already been popular since in the 16th century. Van Dyck himself created a number of original versions on this theme, which goes back to a story of Ovid. Jupiter, in the guise of a satyr and accompanied by his attribute, the eagle, discovers the sleeping nymph Antiope. According to the legend, she bore him two sons, Amphion and Zethus, the future founders of Thebes. This painting dates from c. 1617/1618. At that time, van Dyck collaborated with Rubens and Jordaens ; the influence of these two artists can be seen clearly in this Jupiter and Antiope. the collection

(1599-1641) Regarded as one of the greatest Flemish painters of the 17th Century, along with his friend Reubens. The Flemish robustness of his paintings was toned down throughout his life, particular influenced by Italian works, and he went on to produce some of the finest portraits of the time. He was a painter to King Charles I, from whom he received a Knighthood, and we see the King and his court through van Dyck's eyes. The artist had a huge influence on portrait painters throughout history from this time, particularly Gainsborough who thought he was fabulous.

Van Dyck, Sir Anthony Lamentation, as well as some of his best portraits. The work of Van Dyck differs radically from that of his great master, Rubens, although it is similar in technique. The color is much more restrained, the form more refined, although his best work has an essential vigor that the English painters strove in vain to surpass. In his delineations of English aristocrats, he created a patrician image that greatly influenced the development of English portrait painting. Van Dyck is well represented in the major European galleries. In the United States splendid examples are in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fine Arts and the Gardner museums, Boston, the Frick Collection, New York City, the National Gallery, Washington, D.C., and many others. The Metropolitan Museum has several portraits, including those of James Stuart, the Marchesa Durazzo, and Lucas van Uffel. Van Dyck produced a fine series of etched portraits known as the Iconography.

Anthony van Dyck became the most fashionable portrait painter of the seventeenth century, working for wealthy and powerful clients in many European cities. In 1632 Charles I invited him to London to paint the Royal Family and court circle and he made numerous visits to England until his death there in 1641.
His lasting impact on English portraiture was to bring to it Flemish influences as well as his deep understanding of Italian traditions and styles. He introduced dynamic compositions and he set a high technical standard, particularly for fabric painting, which influenced British artists who followed him.
Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke, Lord Chamberlain, was about 50 years old when this portrait was painted. A generous patron of the arts, he owned a considerable painting collection. He is shown wearing the blue ribbon of the Order of the Garter and holding the wand of office of Lord Chamberlain.

During his first visit to London, Anthony van Dyck produced his portrait of Thomas Howard. It marked the beginning of van Dyck's brilliant international career. Thomas Howard, a prominent member of the court of James I, was to become one of the greatest and most enlightened collectors and patrons England has ever known. In this probing study, White provides a history both of Howard, and of van Dyck, whose canvases established the grand tradition of portraiture both in England and on the Continent. This volume in the Getty Museum Studies in Art series offers not only a complete study of a great painting but also a primer on how great collections are formed and great careers are launched.

    Anthony van Dyck
Flemish portrait-painter, b. at Antwerp, 22 March, 1599; d. in London, 9 December, 1641. This great painter was the seventh child of a family of twelve, being the son of Frans Van Dyck, merchant in silk, linen, and kindred materials, and of Maria, daughter of Dirk Cuypers and Catherina Conincx. While still a boy he was placed, on the advice of Jan Brueghel, as a pupil in the studio of Hendrick Van Balen, who had been a pupil of Rubens . The young artist's development as a painter was rapid, for it is recorded that at the age of fourteen he painted a portrait of an old man, and a lawsuit in 1660 revealed the fact that he had also produced when quite a youth a series of heads exceedingly well painted. A proof of his skill is the fact that in 1618, before he was twenty, he was admitted to the freedom of the guild of St. Luke in Antwerp, an unusual distinction for a youthful painter. The tradition that Van Dyck was apprenticed to Rubens or was ever his pupil must be dismissed. Investigations have proved that he was regarded as a master in his art when he was introduced to the studio of Rubens . Here Van Dyck made one of the group of young men who assisted the master in his decorative works, which it would have been quite impossible for him to complete by himself.

    74. Anthony Van Dyck Biography
History of anthony van dyck. Among Rubens's many famous pupils and assistants, the greatest and most independent was anthony van dyck.
    http://euro-art-gallery.net/history/dijck.htm
    History of Anthony van Dyck
Among Rubens's many famous pupils and assistants, the greatest and most independent was Anthony van Dyck. He soon acquired all the virtuosity of Rubens in rendering the texture and surface of things, whether it were silk or human flesh, but he differed widely from his master in temperament and mood. It seems that Van Dyck was not a healthy man, and in his paintings a languid and slightly melancholic mood often prevails. It may have been this quality that appealed to the austere noblemen of Genoa and to the cavaliers of Charles I's entourage.
In 1632 he had become the Court Painter of Charles I, and his name was Anglicized into Sir Anthony Vandyke. It is to him that we owe an artistic record of this society with its defiantly aristocratic bearing and its cult of courtly refinement. His portrait of Charles I, just dismounted from his horse on a hunting expedition, showed the Stuart monarch as he would have wished to live in history: a figure of matchless elegance, of unquestioned authority and high culture, the patron of the arts, and the upholder of the divine right of kings, a man who needed no outward trappings of power to enhance his natural dignity.
No wonder that a painter who could bring out these qualities in his portraits with such perfection was so eagerly sought after by society. In fact, Van Dyck was so overburdened with commissions for portraits that he, like his master Rubens, was unable to cope with them all himself. He had a number of assistants, who painted the costumes of his sitters arranged on dummies, and he did not always paint even the whole of the head. Some of these portraits are uncomfortably near the flattering fashion-dummies of later periods, and there is no doubt that Van Dyck established a dangerous precedence which did much harm to portrait painting. But all this cannot detract from the greatness of his best portraits.

His lover, Delilah, had his hair cut off while he slept, thus robbing him of his superhuman strength and leaving him defenceless against the Philistines. Van Dyck follows Rubens model, but transforms his teachers composition in his own characteristic way. Instead of portraying Samsons heroic defence, the picture focuses on the moment of discovered betrayal: Samsons wistful leave-taking of the beloved woman who has betrayed him and Delilahs ambivalent affection for the lover whose downfall she has brought about.
