Within a short time of his death he had a reputation on both sides of the Alps as a painter of great stature and importance, and although he is no longer credited with being the 'inventor' of oil painting, as was long maintained, his fame has continued undimmed to the present day. Nothing is known of his training and he is first recorded in 1422 entering the service of the Count of Holland, John of Bavaria, in The Hague. In 1425 John died and later in the same year van Eyck moved to Lille when he was appointed court painter and 'varlet de chambre' (equerry) to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, a post he held until his death. Evidently he was highly esteemed by the Duke and he travelled on secret diplomatic missions to Spain and Portugal for him. About 1430 Jan moved from Lille to Bruges, where he lived until his death. In spite of the documentation on his life, which for a painter of his period is fairly rich, his oeuvre presents many problems, especially in the reconstruction of his early career, for all his dated paintings come from the last term years of his life. The central problem of his career - and one of the most discussed in the history of art - concerns the work that has always been the basis of his resounding fame, the great altarpiece of the Adoration of the Lamb (completed 1432) in Ghent Cathedral. An inscription on the frame states that it was begun by 'the painter Hubert van Eyck, than whom none was greater', and completed by 'Jan, second in art'.

Like Brunelleschi, Van Eyck's social standing may have contributed to his reputation. Employed by Philip the Good Duke of Burgundy, he was evidently held in great esteem for he was granted a pension for life in 1435. He may have been well born (there is some evidence that he had a coat of arms) and he was certainly literate, as the tiny writing on one of his surviving drawings shows. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. T radition has it that Jan van Eyck invented oil painting. He didn't really. Van Eyck was to oil painting what Watt was to the steam engine. Oils came into use a little before van Eyck. But by 1434 he'd used oil to change painting into a whole new art. Jan van Eyck was born sometime before 1390 one of three brothers and a sister, all painters. That was soon after the worst of the Plague. It was just before Gutenberg. It was a world in ferment. We're so aware of the Italian Renaissance, just ahead, that we overlook what was going on in the Netherlands in 1434. Dufay, Ockeghem, and finally Josquin made music into a rich descriptive and subjective medium of communication. One 15th-century writer claimed that nothing older was worth listening to. Now Jan van Eyck: He made oil leap off painted boards and snatch you into his world. He invented glazes that gave oil a wondrous luminosity. His pictures had new depth and 3-dimensionality. He gave us the photo-realism of the Dutch masters, 200 years too soon. That's even stranger when you realize that the rules of perspective were just being written in Italy in 1434.
