Jan van Eyck A family of Flemish painters in whose works the rise and mature development of art in western Flanders are represented. Though bred in the valley of the Meuse, they finally established their professional domicile in Ghent and in Bruges; and there, by skill and inventive genius, they changed the traditional habits of the earlier schools, remodelled the primitive forms of Flemish design, and introduced a complete revolution into the technical methods of execution familiar to their countrymen. Jan van Eyck After his return he settled finally at Bruges, where he married, and his wife bore him a daughter, known in after years as a nun in the convent of Maeseyck. At the christening of this child the duke was sponsor, and this was but one of many distinctions by which Philip the Good rewarded his painter's merits. Numerous altarpieces and portraits now give proof of van Eyck's extensive practice. As finished works of art and models of conscientious labour they are all worthy of the name they bear, though not of equal excellence, none being better than those which were completed about 1432. Of an earlier period, a Consecration of Thomas a Becket has been preserved, and may now be seen at Chatsworth, bearing the date of 1421; no doubt this picture would give a fair representation of van Eyck's talents at the moment when he started as an independent master, but that time and accidents of omission and commission have altered its state to such an extent that no conclusive opinion can be formed respecting it.

Il est probablement né à Maaseick, village dans la vallée de la Meuse, mais peut-être à Maastricht, la ville voisine. Ses plus anciennes œuvres connues (1417) ont été exécutées pour le duc Guillaume IV de Bavière Heures de Milan-Turin dont une grande partie a disparu lors d'un incendie en 1904). De 1422 à 1424, il a été au service de Jean de Bavière, prince-évêque de Liège, devenu comte de Hollande.Il a travaillé à la décoration du palais de La Haye. En 1425, à la mort de son protecteur, il est entré au service du duc de Bourgogne. Valet de chambre et peintre officiel, il a été chargé de plusieurs missions diplomatiques, entre autre en Espagne (1426-1427) et au Portugal, (1429) d'où il a expédié au duc le portrait de la princesse Isabelle, sa future épouse. Entre 1426 et 1429, il a vécu à Lille, ou il s’est marié. Vers 1430 il s’est établi à Bruges, capitale du duché depuis 1419, lorsque Philippe le Bon avait abandonné Dijon après l'assassinat de son père Jean Sans Peur. Van Eyck a travaillé aux décors palatiaux et a conçu les œuvres éphémères que réclamaient les fêtes de la cour, mais cette partie profane de ses créations est très mal connue. Ses peintures religieuses et ses portraits sont beaucoup plus célèbres. He held high positions throughout his career, including court painter and diplomat in Bruges. So outstanding was his skill as an oil painter that the invention of the medium was at one time attributed to him, with his brother Hubert, also a painter. Van Eyck exploited the qualities of oil as never before, building up layers of transparent glazes, thus giving him a surface on which to capture objects in the minutest detail and allowing for the preservation of his colours. Nowhere is this better displayed than in this portrait of Giovanni di Arrigo Arnolfini, a merchant from Lucca and a frequent visitor to Bruges, and his wife Giovanna Cenami. The signature on the back wall - 'Jan Van Eyck was here, 1434' - and his reflection in the mirror has led many to believe that he was a witness to their marriage. The carving of Saint Margaret, the patron saint of childbirth, on the bed, and the presence of the dog - a traditional symbol of faithfulness - accentuate the marital theme."
