Vincent van Gogh
Self-portrait The history of Impressionism would not be complete without the distinctive work of Vincent van Gogh. Paintings of this world famous artist are at the top of today's art price range. He began from drawing and painting dark realistic scenes, but after meeting Impressionists he employed their motifs, bright colours and style of painting. Van Gogh's life was afflicted with mental trouble. His short period of artistic co-operation with Gauguin ended with van Gogh's symbolic act of self-mutilation: he cut off an earlobe. Although most of his last months van Gogh spent under psychiatric treatment, paintings from this period brought him the greatest fame. Van Gogh's work became a basic influence on the development of the Fauvism and Expressionism.

Vincent Van Gogh telah dilahirkan pada 30 March 1853, di kampung Groot Zunbert di daerah Brabant Utara, Belanda. Ayahnya, Theodorus, adalah paderi kampung (pastor) pengikut Gereja Insaf Belanda (Dutch Reformed Church) yang kecil. Ibu Van Gogh bernama Anna Cornelia Carbentus.

He couldn't afford a model and painted often himself Gogh, Vincent Willem van Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, whose work represents the archetype of Expressionism, or emotional spontaneity in painting.
In 1886 van Gogh went to Paris to live with his brother Théo van Gogh, an art dealer, and became familiar with the new art movements developing at the time.
Influenced by the work of the Impressionists and by the work of such Japanese printmakers as Hiroshige and Hokusai, van Gogh began to experiment with current techniques. Subsequently, he adopted the brilliant hues found in the paintings of Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat. In 1888 van Gogh left Paris for southern France, where, under the burning sun of Province, he painted scenes of the fields, cypress trees, peasants, and rustic life characteristic of the region.
For a time he was in a hospital at Arles. He then spent a year in the nearby asylum of Saint-Rémy, working between repeated spells of madness. He shot himself on July 27, 1890, and died two days later.

Vincent Willem van Gogh is born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, in the south of the Netherlands, as the oldest son of Theodorus van Gogh, a preacher and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Four years later, in 1857,Vincent's favorite brother, Theodorus (Theo), is born. Vincent van Gogh at age of 13. In June 1873, Vincent is moved to Goupil in London. Daily contact with works of art kindles his appreciation of paintings and drawings. He admires the realistic paintings of peasant life by Jean-François Millet and Jules Breton. Gradually Vincent loses interest in his work and turns to the Bible. He is transferred to Paris, to London and Paris again, to then be dismissed from Goupil's in March 1876. Driven by a growing desire to help his fellow man, he decides to become a clergyman. Vincent van Gogh at age of 19. Vincent returns to England in 1876 to work as a teacher and assistant preacher at a boarding school. In November, Van Gogh delivers his first sermon. His interest in evangelical Christianity and ministering to the poor becomes obsessional. Due to a lack of professional perspectives, he returns to Amsterdam in 1877. When he is refused admittance in theology school, Vincent briefly enters a missionary school near Brussels and in December 1878 leaves for the Borinage, a coal-mining area in southern Belgium, to work as a lay preacher. Vincent identifies with the miners, sleeping on the floor and giving away his belongings. His extreme commitment draws disfavor from the church and he is dismissed.
