21. Vermeer: Genius Ignored
Lucius Furius view on vermeer and how he was almost forgotten after his death.
http://www.serve.com/Lucius/Vermeer.index.html
Genius Ignored , Chapter 3: Vermeer [Summary: Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer in Delft. After his death he was forgotten almost entirely.] Rembrandt was underestimated; his contemporary Jan Vermeer of Delft was completely ignored. Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer, well-respected in Delft, but never gained much of a reputation outside. After his death, he was forgotten almost entirely. In the nineteenth century he was "rediscovered" and since the beginning of the twentieth has been considered one of the finest painters ever. Link back to Genius Ignored Table of Contents Johannes van der Meer was born on October 31, 1632. (In adulthood he shortened his last name to "Vermeer", apparently to avoid confusion with numerous other "Jan van der Meer"s.) In 1653 he married Catharina Bolnes. He was received into the local Guild of St. Luke (the artists' guild) that same year and by the age of 24 was an accomplished painter: "The Procuress" (Fig. V1), one of only three of his paintings with a date, is from the year 1656. Almost all his paintings have interesting arrangements of figures and objects the large, dark back of the soldier and the bright expression of the girl in "The Soldier and the Laughing Girl", for instance. The paintings I love the most, however, are those in which the humans are most central.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring
The Hague, Mauritshuis (Holland), Johannes Vermeer 1665
Seeing this painting, how do you feel? This might be the most famous painting of Vermeer. I remember that there were no words to say, when I met this wonderful painting at the first time. Then I noticed the turban, which has beautiful and bright blue, and contrast toward yellow clothes. The black of the background is very dark, but we can see the delicate light from her front. They are, however, just factors of this paintings. What impressed me the best, is her gaze. It was very keen, but looked like sad. As other his paintings, this girl seems to be still moving. This painting allowed me to think that she was about to speak to somebody, smile but at the same time, she also seems to be scared. In my private opinions, I prefer a girl who looks like so-called 'short-lived'. So it might be obvious for me to be interested in this picture. At that time, about 5 years ago, I didn't know just his name. I saw this picture on a book. But this picture is used without a name of Vermeer. Then I examined who painted this girl. In fact, it was not so difficult to find his name, Vermeer. 'cause he is enough famous for also people who don't have a specialty of arts.

Vermeer, Jan
Jan or Johannes Vermeer van Delft , b. October 1632, d. December 1675, a Dutch genre painter who lived and worked in Delft, created some of the most exquisite paintings in Western art. His works are rare. Of the 35 or 36 paintings generally attributed to him, most portray figures in interiors. All his works are admired for the sensitivity with which he rendered effects of light and color and for the poetic quality of his images. Little is known for certain about Vermeer's life and career. He was born in 1632, the son of a silk worker with a taste for buying and selling art. Vermeer himself was also active in the art trade. He lived and worked in Delft all his life. Not much is known about Vermeer's apprenticeship as an artist either. His teacher may have been Leonaert Bramer, a Delft artist who was a witness at Vermeer's marriage in 1653, or the painter Carel Fabritius of Delft. In 1653 he enrolled at the local artists guild. His earliest signed and dated painting, The Procuress (1656; Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), is thematically related to a

Glazing in the Art of Johannes Vermeer
the mysterious old masters' painting
technique and how Vermeer used it
O f all the old masters' painting techniques, glazing is probably the most discussed but the least understood. Completely abandoned in the twentieth-century, it was once one of the most valuable tools possessed by painters. In recent years glazing has been called upon by many art historians and painters alike to explain every nuance in many a masterpiece, assuming an almost mystical character. In order to better comprehend glazing's technical complexities and true purposes, both the technique itself and how Vermeer utilized it in his own masterpieces, will be examine
Glazing a Red Satin Dress
step one
Vermeer first painted the so called underpainting , modeling forms and creating light effects with shades of opaque vermilion and flake white. Vermilion was the only strong red opaque pigment available, it had an orange over tone. A small amount of bone black was added in the darker shadows. This layer was allowed to dry completely
step two
Over the underpainting Vermeer applied one or two very thin layers of madder lake, a deep ruby red, which is tranparent by nature.

Girl with A Pearl Earring
An In-Depth Study by Jonathan Janson The Girl with a Pearl Earring is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's absolute masterworks. It is also the one most surrounded by mystery. After more than a century of study, the painting still poses significant questions. Who was the sitter and was the painting even intended as a portrait? Why had it remained in complete obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1882 and sold for the price of a reproduction? Was it a part of a pendant? Did Vermeer sell the painting during his lifetime? Why was the original background a deep transparent green rather than the black we see today? Was the pearl a real one? What significance did the turban have? How was it painted? Which pigments were used?
In the following in-depth study, these, and many more questions are addressed drawing from the most up-to-date and widest historically founded sources.

His entire life was spent in Delft, where, it has been suggested, he may have been trained by Leonaert Bramer or Carel Fabritius. His work does indeed show an affinity with that of Fabritius, but their relationship remains uncertain. Vermeer was a Master in the Delft painters' guild from 1653, was elected Dean ( hoofdman
A chronology of Vermeer's work is complicated by the fact that only three paintings are dated: The Procuress The Astronomer (1668, private collection), and The Geographer The Procuress ; both are history paintings, painted in a warm palette and in a relatively large format for Vermeer - Christ in the House of Mary and Martha (Edinburgh, National Gallery) and Diana and her Companions (The Hague, Mauritshuis).
