P. Vibert is written by Brent Dickerson, whose web site can be viewed at: http://www.csulb.edu/~odinthor He bred with, and offered, roses of all sorts, from the new Chinas and Teas (he was the first to introduce to French horticulture the first yellow Tea, 'Parks' Yellow Tea-Scented China', so important to later breeding in France), to Noisettes (he bred the still-popular 'Aimée Vibert'), to the traditional Albas, Gallicas, Centifolias, Mosses, and Damasks, remaining a large-scale breeder of these several traditional classes long after public interest in them had diminished. He had a particular interest in Damask Perpetuals, and also bred some early Hybrid Perpetuals. He delighted in striped and spotted roses, and bred many such among the Gallicas, Centifolias, etc. Many, many of the roses still being sold in these groups were originated by Vibert; a check of the catalog lists of today will find Vibert's name omnipresent.

Jehan George Vibert
Jehan was born in Paris, France on the 30th September 1840 and it was no surprise that he became an artist. His paternal grandfather was Jean Pierre Vibert the famous botanist who is also covered elsewhere on this site. His maternal grandfather was the celebrated French engraver Jazet.
He studied engraving with Jazet, but soon realized he wanted to be a painter and entered the studio of F.J.Barrias. At the age of 16 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and by his own accounts topped the class for six years in a row !
In 1870 during the siege of Paris he joined the " sharpshooters" and was wounded at Malmaison on October the 21st, receiving the medal of the Legion of Honour. This injury did not seem too bad however as he continued to paint profusely until 1899.
He died in 1902, of what I do not know. But one thing is for sure. I wish I had his talent instead of his waistline !.The following picture is the only one I know of him.

75. ATELIER BOOTLEG PRODUCTIONS
(a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau), and Jehan Georges vibert a star of the anecdotal genre painting of the previous century.
http://www.street-level.net/booklist/information.html
Information View the booklist To the student, practitioner and advocate of the classical painting tradition, and all those interested in furthering their knowledge of the craft of picture-making as it was practiced from the time of the old masters, up until the ateliers of the previous century... I have in the past been allowed brief access to a number of manuscripts and treatises on classical painting and drawing methods, techniques and instruction. These books range in date from the late 1600's till the late 1800's (and a few from the early part of this century). Being a student of classical painting, I've found books to be an invaluable supplement to my apprenticeship in my master's studio. Among the authors of these manuscripts, I was pleased to find the names of Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst... (a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau), and Jehan Georges Vibert... a star of the anecdotal genre painting of the previous century. (a great and successful painter, in all sense of the word... similar in style to Jean Leon Gerome and Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier). I was allowed to make photocopies copies of these manuscripts for my continued use. The list of the titles is available by clicking on titles in the left hand navigation bar. Once the original books are received from the loaning agencies, a master copy is then made from them. (the original is leant to me only for a few days before it is due to be returned). When an order is placed, a copy is made from the master. As this is a third generation copy, the text will be fine (though due to age and handling, once in a while a page or two might be missing... but the books are mostly in tact), but complex illustrations will be low quality. These books were ordered for the text (I search primarily for treatises written in the previous century... or at least good texts that are rare). It is often difficult to find many worthy treatises, manuals and accounts of academic and old studio practices of painting and drawing methods of the previous centuries written in the present day. It is also doubtful that we will have reprints of many of these old manuscripts. I feel the sacrifice of printing quality of a photocopy, the
