Hubert von Herkomer was born in Germany in 1849. Hubert's family to England and in 1857 settled in Southampton . Herkomer studied at Southampton School of Art, the Munich Academy and the South Kensington Art School, where like his fellow student Luke Fildes , he was influenced by the work of Frederick Walker
Herkomer left Kensington Art School and 1867 and started a career as a book and magazine illustrator. Herkomer found most of the work fairly boring but as a young man with radical political opinions he was excited by the news that the social reformer, William Luson Thomas , planned to publish an illustrated weekly magazine called the Graphic magazine. Herkomer sent Thomas a drawing of a group of gypsies. Thomas accepted the picture and the following week it appeared in the

Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA RWS RI RE (1849-1914)
'Two things are to him superlatively attractive - old age and poverty. With these subjects, Mr Herkomer has taken the line of truth, sincerer than that of the sentimentalist, and nobler than that of the humorist.' Hubert von Herkomer Hubert von Herkomer was born in Bavaria, came to England in 1857, and studied art at the RCA from 1866, under the direction of Sir Luke Fildes . Herkomer first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869, his famous The Last Muster was one of the pictures of the year in 1875, and he became successively RI (1871), ARA (1879) and RA in 1890. He was influenced in watercolour painting by the painter J. W. North, and after spending some months painting in his company, became RWS. (In 1897, he was narrowly beaten for the Presidency of the Royal Watercolour Society by E. A. Waterlow Herkomer founded a school of art at Bushey, Hertfordshire, directing it personally from its foundation in 1883 through to 1904. He had very strong ideas on the proper way to teach art, using a scheme of progressive study, centred around study from life. First the students would study casts from life, then they would enter the life room, and only afterwards could they work from the antique. (This was the reverse of the system used in the Royal Academy Schools and South Kensington, where students started with the antique and ended with the life class.) The idea was that the students would develop their own character as artists, and then use the antique as examples of the ideal figure, rather than slavishly copy what they saw. The School was very successful, and students there included

Frank Holl, the son of an engraver, was born in 1845. The Holl family were active socialists and from an early age Frank was taught that he had a responsibility to help change society. Frank's father was frustrated by the fact that his work consisted of expressing other men's ideas and he told his son that he wanted to be an independent artist but had "been driven by a graving tool to earn his bread".
At the age of fifteen Frank Holl became a student at the Royal Academy . His first large painting, A Mother and Child , was a portrayal of working class poverty and like much of his work, reflected his socialist upbringing. However, he was criticised by his tutors for the political content of his work and he agreed to paint biblical subjects to win the Academy's gold medal award. Afterwards he told a friend that in future he would never paint pictures that he did not "feel".

Since novelist Thomas Hardy did not even meet Hubert Herkomer, the principal illustrator in the collaborative team to whom Locker assigned the illustrating of Tess of the D'Urbervilles , until 1904, his six plates cannot be regarded in same light as those, for example, that Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz') developed in collaboration with Charles Dickens for Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-4). However, in each of his illustrations Herkomer offers a perceptive visual interpretation that he formulated prior to the book's serial publication. An accomplished single-and-group portrait-painter, landscape artist, etcher, and lithographer (and the inventor of the "Herkomergravure" process), Sir Hubert Von Herkomer, R. A., was born in 1849 at Waal in southern Bavaria, making him nine years Hardy's junior. When Herkomer was eight, his father brought the family back to Europe from America, settling at Southampton. After some early training in his father's workshop in wood-engraving, at the age of 14 he attended the Southampton School of Art, then the Munich Academy, and finally the South Kensington School of Art in 1866. With the acceptance by the recently-founded Graphic of his drawing of a gypsy encampment on Wimbledon common, a strong piece of social realism, Herkomer began a ten-year career as a magazine and book illustrator. Among the many British illustrated periodicals to which he contributed were the

View matted image Artist: VON HERKOMER, SIR HUBERT (Bavaria, 1849 - Hertfordshire, 1914) Date: Medium: ORIGINAL ETCHING AND DRYPOINT ENGRAVING Printer: EUGENE DELATRE, PARIS Note: Hubert von Herkomer: A prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers, Hubert von Herkomer left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer also wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous book, Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving , was published in 1892. In 1896 he was Knighted by Queen Victoria. Many of Sir Hubert von Herkomer’s etchings particularly his figure studies deal with the Bavaria of his early childhood. Early German folklore and related literature was one of his lifelong interests and perhaps the book the young girl is reading from in this etching deals with that subject.

Biography
Hubert von Herkomer c 1890 (self portrait in lithograph). Hubert Herkomer was born in Waal, near the town of Landsberg in Bavaria in May 1849. His family were all craftsmen and his career into art was, perhaps, pre-determined. His father was a woodcarver and his mother a pianist and teacher of music. In 1851 in search of new opportunities the family emigrated to America arriving in New York, and later settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Work was not easy to find and his mother became the main breadwinner. In May 1857 the family moved to England setting up home in Southampton. These early years were to have enenormous influence on him and helped develop his symapthy for the poor. Aside from the obvious hardships of travel the family had faced poverty and predjudice against their German origins. Herkomer went with his father to Munich in 1865 and received formal instruction in art which was continued in 1866 and 1867 at the South Kensington Art School in London on their return - although he was largely self-taught. From 1869 Herkomer's work, in the form of woodcuts and as an art journalist, began to appear regularly in periodicals of the period - notably The Graphic and he was one of a small number of illustrators who impressed and influenced Van Gogh. Scenes of poverty, the poor, and social realism were favoured themes. Under the influence of Frederick Walker and others Herkomer developed his own artistic style.

From London: Liverpool Street Station, trains from 9.30 (weekdays) about 30 pounds day return, that price for all trains including early ones on weekend, 9.30 am gets in at 11.20 so one can have a full day there. Norwich Castle holds the museum of the city, and this is the place to go to see the Norwich School of painters, which was centred around John Crome (1768-1821) and John Sell Cotman (1782-1843). There are lots of works by these two and their followers, typically brownish landscapes in a bright light. These artists are at their best in watercolour, and this is a great strength of the Norwich collection. For the Victorians and later, the later generation of Norwich School artists don't really compare to Crome and Cotman. There is a whole room of paintings by latter-generation Cotmans, and another with Crome's contemporaries and pupils. The best of the bunch is Henry Bright (1816-1873), whose shore and sea paintings include powerful studies of light in stormy weather, most notably in the large pictures St Benet's Abbey and Orford Castle, Suffolk

Hubert von Herkomer Hubert von Herkomer was born in Bavaria in 1849. His family left for the USA in 1851 and, after spending a few years in Cleveland, returned to Europe to settle in England in 1857. Herkomer studied at the Southampton School of Arts; in 1865 he briefly attended the Munich Academy and later on the South Kensington Art School in London. He began his career as an illustrator and preferred real life subjects, especially the lives of the poor and disadvantaged. Nevertheless, he also completed several portraits of famous people and romantic landscapes taken from his travels to rural England, Wales and Bavaria. Herkomer was a multi-talented artist; he enjoyed experimenting with new media, such as enamel painting, and developed what he called "pictorial musical plays" designing props and directing plays. He also founded a successful art school in his home in Bushey, Hertfordshire. In 1913 Herkomer became involved in filming and must have made several films, at least two of which are known. The painting Eventide was considered as the female companion picture to the Last Muster, now in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Both paintings describe the life of the old and entail notions of death. Eventide was based on three more realistic drawings that Herkomer had made for the Graphic magazine in which he focused on the hardship of the women's lives.

Eventide: A Scene in the Westminster Union, 1878 by Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) Hubert von Herkomer is regarded as a British artist, although he was born in Germany. He started his early career as an illustrator for the Graphic Magazine in London, producing wood engravings of scenes of everyday life. The famous Dutch painter Van Gogh admired Herkomer's work for its expressive qualities.
Eventide depicts inmates of the St.James's Workhouse in Soho, London. Workhouses were the last resort of those - often the old - who through extreme poverty were unable to support themselves. Herkomer was drawn to the subject because of his sympathy for what he called "the sorrowful side of humanity". The workhouse scene appears to be quite comfortable with its table cloth, vase and prints on the wall. The women look cheerful engaged in their sowing: one holds a bible on her lap, another enjoys her tea. The inclusion of a young woman in their midst shows the contrast between youth and age, a popular Victorian theme. Eventide was considered as the female companion picture to the Last Muster (now in the Lady Lever Art Gallery), which shows elderly Chelsea pensioners and Crimean War veterans.
