Henry Wallis and the Death of Chatterton
Thomas Chatterton's face had long been lost to the ages when Wallis chose acquaintance George Meredith to pose for his painting "The Death of Chatterton." The long English nose and the shock-red hair, those belong to Meredith, a novelist and poet himself. The picture was painted in the attic of Chatterton's Brook St. garret apartment. George Meredith (1828-1909) The son of a tailor, Meredith was born in Portsmouth. His mother died when he was two years old, and soon after his father went bankrupt. Still, Meredith was educated as a gentleman, eventually going to London to study law, a field he gave up in favor of poetry. In 1849, he he married Mary Nicolls, a widow six years his senior the beautiful and intelligent daughter of writer Thomas Love Peacock. The marriage was not a happy one. As the story goes, painter Henry Wallis fell in love with Mary and, in 1858, the two eloped to Capri. When Wallis soon tired of her, she returned to England a broken and destitute woman. Meredith never forgave her and she died in 1861.

Biographical History
Henry Wallis (1830-1916) was an artist, ceramics expert and collector. He achieved acclaim as a painter with the exhibition of his portrait 'The Death of Chatterton' at the Royal Academy in 1856, and followed up his success with 'The Stonebreaker', which was exhibited in 1858. Although he continued to paint and exhibit, he became increasingly interested in archaeology and ceramics. He travelled extensively and became an authority on Persian, Egyptian, Greek and Byzantine ceramics. He wrote and illustrated twenty volumes on ceramics during the period 1885-1899. He never married but he did have a son, Harold ('Felix'), with his lover Mary Meredith. For further details see Dictionary of National Biography

Henry Wallis Henry Wallis, Born in1855 in England did not start to paint until the death of his wife in 1925. He was discovered in 1928 by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, and his primitive style had a huge impact on the art movement that sprang up around the St Ives painters in Cornwall. His scenes of fishing life, with harbours, ships and lighthouses where not drawn directly from life but from his memory and experiences. Despite becoming the best known naive artist, Wallis was poverty stricken and died in 1942 in a workhouse in France. The Death of Chatterton
