Born in Pittsburgh to Czechoslovakian parents, Andy Warhol graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949 and went on to work as a professional illustrator.
The conjunction of commerce and art seemed to lead to his big break. In 1962 the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles held an exhibition of his personal artwork including the now famous Campbell's Soup Cans. The soup cans made him (ironically, of course) a household name, at least in the art world. Andrew Warhola became one of the first and most famous members of the Pop Art set.
For many years after the exhibition he produced what is considered to be his best work, often based around altered and painted-over photographs, and poorly duplicated screen-print reproductions of his work.
Warhol's art often dealt with the superficial nature of the modern celebrity. When he is mentioned nowadays, it is most often in conjunction with a remark he made (although I can't for the life of me find out when or where he is supposed to have said it), that: 'In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.'
A member of Warhol's circle, Valerie Solanas, is probably best known to the world for producing the SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, a pamphlet explaining how the male of the species should be systematically removed from society. In 1968, the year she published the manifesto, Solanas shot Andy Warhol. His health never fully recovered (he once remarked 'I always wished I had died, and I still wish that, because I could have gotten the whole thing over with.'), and the incident may have helped drive him to an early grave. After the shooting, Warhol concentrated on making experimental films.

Developed by The Andy Warhol Museum, One Stop Warhol Shop is an evolving Web project encompassing the single most comprehensive Internet resource on Andy Warhol and a unique online experience to represent his multifaceted and (re)inventive spirit. To this end, One Stop Warhol Shop embraces the idea of a museum as an "open work," enabling users to easily navigate their own path of discovery. Much like Warhol browsed the myriad worlds of our culture and "shopped" for the most potent images, ideas and technology, visitors are encouraged to "shop" the site and, ultimately, construct their own Warhol. It is done in quasi-documentary style and tells about the life of Valerie Solanas (Lili Taylor) who shot Andy Warhol (Jared Harris) because "he had too much control over my life." The reason he had so much control is because he would not produce her play claiming it was "too disgusting even for us." I can not even repeat its name in this G rated review of an R rated film. The movie starts with Andy alive but his body bloody and quivering after being shot. The police want to know why she shot him, but she keeps telling them it is too complicated to explain. The film then switches to her time in college and works it way back to the shooting.

Andy Warhol :
Biography
A ndy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928. In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York."
Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote . His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

Dia exhibited one of Warhol's major late series: the Last Supper paintings, at 548 West 22nd Street. Based on the renowned painting by Leonardo da Vinci, this image was used by Warhol at the end of his career for a remarkable group of monumental paintings. Approximately half of the dozen vast paintings, some up to forty feet in length, were made by silkscreening the image, and the other half by outlining the image as projected on the canvas. Very few of these monumental Last Supper paintings, often considered Warhol's finest late works, have been seen in United States museums. The initial exhibition for which the series was devised was held in Milan in 1987. Dia brought together five of the major monumental paintings from collections in the U.S. and abroad, plus a group of related works on paper.
