Resources Menu Categorical Index Library Gallery Andy Warhol Artist and Filmmaker They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Andy Warhol (Andrew Warhola) was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is considered by many as the most influential American artist of the second half of the 20th century. Warhol's signature style used commercial silkscreening techniques to create identical, mass produced images on canvas, then variations in color to give each print of an edition a different look. Warhol first applied his silkscreen techniques as a commercial artist in the 1950s. Window displays of a Fifth Avenue department store featured his comicbook superhero images. His initial forays into the POP ART came in the early 1960s with his Coca-Cola Bottles (1962) and sculptures of Brillo Boxes (1964), which brought worldwide recognition. Condemned as consumerism by many critics, his work was enthusiastically accepted in Europe, Australia and Japan. Later in the 1960s, Warhol produced a series of motion pictures dealing with such concepts as time, boredom and repetition. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal. Warhol's generally sunny and upbeat artwork turned to more serious subjects in his images of Jacqueline Kennedy mourning the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, and his "Birmingham Race Riot" (1964). His "Endangered Species" prints (1983) including "Pine Barrens Tree Frog," the "Orangutan" and the "Bald Eagle," inspired concern, not at the subjects themselves, but at their possible absence.

Andy Warhol, natch BY GARY MORRIS The Whitney Museum and New York MOMA's restoration of Andy Warhol Paul Morrissey 's distinctly different and ultimately quite un-Warholesque films like Trash and Heat (no putdown of those classics intended). Warhol's disengagement with an art form whose course he radically altered is legendary; the image of a permanently distracted Andy turning on a camera, corralling some of his "superstars" to primp and prance in front of it, then wandering off on some new tangent seems irrefutable. And arguably some of the best of the early films that are only recently surfacing suggest another auteur at work: poet and campmeister Ronald Tavel. But it's Warhol's personality that dominates, just as it does his more obviously personal works like the silkscreens. A film like Inner and Outer Space (1965), with multiple Edie Sedgwicks, is clearly related to the multiple Elvises, or electric chairs, or soup cans. The obsession with surface, and the terror of what lies beneath it, that's rampant in his visual art is all over films like Hedy and Horse (both 1965) and, supremely, the hundreds of four-minute

Album Cover Artists Soon after its introduction in the 1950s, the LP began to offer a medium for the marriage of the musical arts to the visual arts. The appeal of LPs over CDs continues today for certain collectors who find the larger visual canvas of the LP to be esthetically superior. Five decades of intermingling art with music has left a certain expectation that such a coupling is just in the natural order of things. So, perhaps the biggest challenge with the evolution of audio technologies like mp3 is not encryption or intellectual property protection, but in somehow attaching visual art to the sound file. Check back in the future, since additional covers will be added as I get the time and images (feel free to suggest any LP covers that have been conspicuosly excluded from any artist gallery). Yousuf Karsh was born in Armenia in 1908 and grew up under the horrors of the Armenian massacres. His photographer uncle, George Nakash, brought him to Canada in 1924. After an apprenticeship in Boston with the eminent portrait photographer John H. Garo, Karsh settled in Ottawa in 1932, where he began his professional career. As early as 1936 he was photographing visiting statesmen and dignitaries, among them President Franklin Roosevelt. Karsh's major photographic exhibitions have attracted enthusiastic audiences worldwide, and he is much in demand as an eloquent and engaging speaker. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Canada,- the National Portrait Gallery, London, and other leading museums. He is a recipient of the Canada Council Medal and is a Companion of the Order of Canada (akin to a knighthood). Karsh was awarded the Presidential Citation (U.S.A.) for meritorious service on behalf of the handicapped. He has been Visiting Professor of Fine Arts at Ohio University at Athens and Emerson College in Boston, and has received more than two dozen honorary degrees.
