Artist - Whistler Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903) Portrait by Walter Greaves Born in the United States, Whistler trained in Russia and France before settling in London. His passion for Japanese art and his interest in creating mood through colour, composition and musical suggestion made him a leading figure of the avant-garde. His defence of art for art’s sake at his famous libel trial against the critic John Ruskin also made him the champion of the British aesthetic movement. Whistler, James Abbott McNeill
Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903). American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. He spent several of his childhood years in Russia (where his father had gone to work as a civil engineer) and was an inveterate traveller. His training as an artist began indirectly when, after his discharge from West Point Military Academy for `deficiency in chemistry', he learnt etching as a US navy cartographer. In 1855 he went to Paris, where he studied intermittently under Gleyre, made copies in the Louvre, acquired a lasting admiration for Velázquez , and became a devotee of the cult of the Japanese print and oriental art and decoration in general. Through his friend Fantin-Latour he met Courbet , whose Realism inspired much of his early work. The circles in which he moved can be gauged from Fantin-Latour's Homage to Delacroix , in which Whistler is portrayed alongside Baudelaire, Manet , and others. He settled in London in 1859, but often returned to France. His

Home James Abbott McNeill Whistler "Whistler was the son of a railway engineer, born in Lowell, Massachusetts, but throughout his life he pretended to be a Southern gentleman. He was, in most imaginable ways, self-invented. Like West "Whistler was accepted by Paris as no American painter before him had been. As a young man, he worked with Gustave Courbet . He enjoyed the respect of Šdouard Manet and Edgar Degas , though the latter sometimes gave him the sharp edge of his tongue - "Visslair, you behave as though you had no talent." He appears (with Baudelaire, Manet, and other luminaries) in Fantin-Latour's group portrait of the rising art stars of 1864, Homage to Delacroix . "This American is a great artist," said Camille Pissarro , "and the only one of whom America can be justly proud." And Marcel Proust would turn part of his name, unpronounceable by the French, into an anagram: he became the painter Elstir in A la recherche A temps perdu "Valparaiso was as close as Whistler ever got to the Orient, but he was seen in France and England as a cultural bridge to Japan. He was obsessed by the formal beauty of Oriental art, especially Japanese prints (which were available by the ream in Paris and London) and Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, of which he amassed a choice collection. Through the study of Japanese concision, he brought an esthetic of hints and nuances into late-nineteenth-century painting. His abhorrence of narrative, his refusal to moralize through art, his preference for the exquisitely designed moment over the slice of life: these were new, and they epitomized the ideal of Art for Art's Sake. It was provocative, in 1871, to call a portrait of his mother

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill 1834-1903, American painter, etcher, wit, and eccentric, b. Lowell, Mass. The Little White Girl To advertise and defend his credo of art for art's sake, Whistler resorted to elaborate exhibits, lectures, polemics, and more than one lawsuit. In connection with his Falling Rocket: Nocturne in Black and Gold Nocturne in Black and Gold, and Arrangement in Gray and Black (the famed portrait of the artist's mother, 1872; Louvre). Whistler won the argument in court but payment of the court costs left him bankrupt. Toward the end of his life Whistler won wide recognition for his admirable draftsmanship, exquisite color, and extreme technical proficiency both as painter and etcher. As an etcher he achieved a high reputation. More than 400 superb plates remain. He also excelled in lithography, watercolor, and pastel. Fine examples of Whistler's painting are in the galleries of London, Paris, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York City. The most representative collection is that in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., which also contains an entire room that he decorated in a style that anticipated art nouveau Nocturne in Green and Gold, Cremorne Gardens at Night

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter and etcher, who assimilated Japanese art styles, made technical innovations, and championed modern art. Many regard him as preeminent among etchers. Whistler was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, did not do well in his studies, and left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coast Survey. One year later he left the United States and went to Paris, where he became a pupil of the Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. Formal instruction influenced him less, however, than his acquaintance with the French realist painter Gustave Courbet, other leading contemporary artists, and his own study of the great masters and of Japanese styles. In Paris, Whistler won recognition as an etcher when his first series of etchings, Twelve Etchings from Nature (commonly called The French Set), appeared in 1858. Soon after he moved to London, where his paintings, hitherto rejected repeatedly by the galleries of Paris, found acceptance. At the Piano was shown by the Royal Academy of London in 1860. In 1863Symphony in White No. 1: The White Girl (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) won great acclaim in Paris. Thereafter exhibitions of his work aroused increasing international interest, as did his flamboyantly eccentric personality.

    Nocturne Palaces
"Whistler's immense graphic talents influenced American style: he led a number of Americans to a new attitude about art, to a new view of etching and lithography, and to a 'new' medium, the pastel. If he was not an Impressionist-and in any strict sense he surely was not-he nonetheless led others toward an impressionistic style. Economy of means was always important for him, and even his critics recognized that his 'audacity is based on directness and simplicity of color.' American artists had been moving toward the subjective, the expressive, incisive strokes. And watercolor for Whistler was the most evanescent of mediums: his small sketches are literally impressions, with a few strokes of a wet brush conveying the most delicate moods of nature."
quotation from Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr.

    Biography
James A. McNeill Whistler, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on 11 July, 1834 to Major George Washington Whistler and Anna Matilda McNeill. Although he had employment as an etcher for the US Coast Survey, Whistler moved to Europe in 1855 to pursue a career in the arts. He spent most of his life in London, while making many trips to Paris, France. He painted as a Symbolist, as opposed to his contemporaries, the Impressionists. He had a strong preference for decorative effects, and his work could be considered a precursor to the Art Nouveau. Whistler believed Modern Art should be a homage to beauty. Whistler died on the 17 July, 1903, in London. Born on 8 January, 1836, in Dronrijp, Denmark, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was an accomplished artist. His father was Pieter Jiltes Tadema, and his mother, Hinke Dirks Brouwer. At a young age, Alma-Tadema was accepted to study art at Antwerp Academy, and by the age of thirty, he was an established painter of ancient and medieval history. In 1870, Alma-Tadema moved to London, where he continued to paint scenes from Roman life. By the 1890s, Alma-Tadema had become a naturalized British citizen and a member of the Royal Academy. Alma-Tadema died in 1912, on the eve of WWI, and his reputation all but disappeared.

Museum purchase, 958-0-152 Since the time of its first owner, New Yorker Edward Holbrook, The Thames from Battersea Reach has been attributed to James Abbott McNeill Whistler. The painting shows the embankment at Battersea Reach overlooking the Thames from Whistler's neighborhood in Chelsea, with the factory smokestacks and church steeple of Cremorne visible on the opposite shore, and interprets these much as Whistler did around 1863-64, with predominantly gray coloring and swift, thin brushwork. In recent years, it has been suggested that the painting is a document of Whistler's friendship with Walter Greaves, and partially or wholly Greaves's work.
When Andrew McLaren Young examined the painting around 1971, he felt that the embankment and figure in the foreground, and the docked boats in the middle distance did not ring true to Whistler, conjecturing that it might instead be the work of Whistler's former pupil, Walter Greaves (1846-1930), an attribution in which Young's co-author, Margaret MacDonald, concurred. A technical examination of the painting revealed that the boats, embankment, and figure were all made with the same paint, and that the inscription at the lower left, "Whistler1863," which is not in Whistler's handwriting, was applied at the same time as the surrounding passages of paint.

Whistler was among a group of Americans living abroad in the late nineteenth century. Along with several other expatriates he gravitated to Paris. Whistler moved to London where he became an influential artist. His poetic temperament led him to develop a style based on colors, textures, and tones. This delicate pastel of Venice combines all of these attributes to produce a sense of mystery and transience. ACTIVITY
Begin by asking students to identify the materials used for this work. Then have them write essays comparing it with Woman at a Window by Glackens. Note that although both artists used pastel on paper, the subjects and compositions are very different (vertical format/horizontal format, interior/landscape, cool colors/warm colors, intimate/expansive, etc.). Have them conclude their essays with a paragraph about which work they prefer and why. Learning Results
