HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Whistler, James Abbott McNeill US painter and etcher. Active in London from 1859, he was a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement . Influenced by Japanese prints, he painted riverscapes and portraits that show subtle composition and colour harmonies, for example Arrangement in Grey and Black Portrait of the Painter's Mother (1871 Muse d'Orsay, Paris). He settled in Chelsea, London, and painted views of the Thames including Old Battersea Bridge (about 187275 Tate Gallery, London). In 1877 the art critic John Ruskin published an article on his Nocturne in Black and Gold The Falling Rocket (Detroit Institute of Arts) which led to a trial in which Whistler sued Ruskin for libel, claiming 1,000 he was awarded symbolic damages of a farthing (a quarter of an old penny). Whistler described the trial in his book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies Determined to avoid the sentimental storytelling that dominated Victorian painting, he sought an art that was concerned solely with aesthetic qualities. The delicacy of his work is best seen in his etchings, lithographs, pastels, and watercolours. His Peacock Room (187677) for the London home of a Liverpool shipping magnate was an original departure in interior decoration (reconstruction in Freer Gallery, Washington DC) .

One of the most charming of Whistler's early ethings, this portrait studie of Annie haden was etched around 1859. The etching is not to be found among the Twelve Etchings from Nature, having only been available as an independent print. Annie Haden was the eldest daughter of Whistler's half-sister, Deborah and the famous etcher, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. At the time of this etching, she would have been about 10 or 12 years old. A fine impression on cream laid paper with wide margins. $1,750. The Beggars. 1879-81. Etching. K 194.ix. 12 x 8 1/4. A superb impression printed in dark brown ink one of only 12 or 14 impressions printed by the master printer, Frederick Goulding for the Fine Arts Society, to complete the edition due to them from Whistler. Inscribed verso in ink, "F. Goulding. Printer. Nov. 27, 1903." In 1879, Whistler was declared bankrupt as a result of the combinedeffect of his break with his wealthy sponsor, F.R. Leyland, costing him more than £2,000 in unpaid fees, and his hollow victory in the Ruskin libel case, which left him with only one farthing in damages and massive legal costs. He wa commissioned by the Fine Art Society in London for a series of twelve etched views of Venice. In September 1879 he left for Italy on the trip that was to produce his most celebrated etched works. One of these magnificent etchings was

Artist. Born in Lowell (Massachusetts, USA), Whistler was brought up in Russia (1843-8), where he studied art in St. Petersburg, before spending time in London (England). His mother was a MacNeill, descended from a chief of the clan and a Jacobite, who had emigrated from Skye to North Carolina in 1746. After his father's death in 1849 the family returned to America and Whistler joined the US Military Academy at West Point, but was expelled in 1854. He briefly joined the Coast and Geodetic Survey who training him in etching. In 1855, he travelled to Europe once more to study art and was never to return to the USA. Although Whistler visited Scotland only once, in 1888 he married Beatrice, daughter of Scottish sculptor John Birnie Philip. Mark Harden www.artchive.com James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the American painter and etcher, was born July 10, 1834, in Lowell, MA. His studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point didn't go well and he left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coastal Survey. After a year in its service, he left the United States for Paris where he became a student of Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. This formal education had less influence on his work than his association with French realist Gustave Courbet and other contemporary artists or his independent study of the Masters and Japanese prints. In Paris, Whistler gained recognition as an etcher when his first series
