James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) One of his era’s most outspoken proponents of art for art’s sake, James A.M. Whistler thumbed his nose at conventional Victorian notions of storytelling in painting. The subtle harmonies of his misty, impressionist landscapes and of his portraits, which were more compositions of muted colors than actual representations of the sitters baffled the public and outraged critics at first. In the end, however, he was recognized as one of the most original and influential painters of the 19th century. In many ways his later work paved the way for the abstract art that emerged some 50 years later. Moreover, his representational etchings now are considered by some the finest since Rembrandt. Whistler was born in 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts. His father, a civil engineer, took the family to Russia in 1843, while he supervised construction of the first railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow. Following the aristocratic Russian custom, the young Whistler grew up speaking French. He also had his first art training at the Imperial Academy of the Fine Arts. When his father died, the family returned to the United States and, in 1851, Whistler entered the military academy at West Point. He excelled in drawing, but failed chemistry and was expelled in 1853.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American painter and etcher. He is perhaps best known for his nearly black-and-white full-length portrait of his mother, reading in a rocking chair, titled Arrangement in Gray and Black, No. 1 , but usually referred to as Whistler's Mother . Though American, Whistler lived and worked mainly in Britain and France. His painting The White Girl (1862) caused controversy when exhibited in London and, later, at the Salon des Refusés in Paris. The painting epitomised Whistler's theory that art should essentially be concerned with the beautiful arrangement of colors in harmony, not with the accurate portrayal of the natural world, as recommended by the critic John Ruskin. In 1878 Whistler sued Ruskin for libel after the critic condemned his painting Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket , calling the artist a "coxcomb". Whistler won a farthing in nominal damages. The cost of the case bankrupted him. Whistler was friendly with various French artists, illustrating the book Les Chauves-Souris with Antonio de La Gandara. He also knew the the impressionists, notably
