Woolner was born to Thomas and Rebecca ( née Leeks) Woolner in Suffolk. He was educated at Ipswich, and at the age of twelve studied sculpture with William Behnes. In December 1842, at the age of seventeen, he exhibited a model of "Eleanor sucking the Poison from the arm of Prince Edward" at the Royal Academy. By the time he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1847, Woolner had won the 1845 Society of the Arts medal for "Affection," a model of a woman and two children, and the Academy exhibition for his bas-relief, "Alastor," was well-received. His bronze model of Puck attracted the attention of Tennyson, to whom he was later introduced by Patmore, and who became the subject of two famous busts. His acquaintance with Dante Gabriel Rossetti escalated to membership in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but despite "My Beautiful Lady," Woolner averred to William Bell Scott that "[p]oetry is not my proper work in this world; I must sculpture it, not write it." Yet his success in sculpture and medallion portraiture yielded only modest financial reward, prompting him to try his luck in the Australian goldfields. When he sailed for Melbourne on 24 July 1852 the Rossettis, Hunt, and Ford Madox Brown accompanied him on board. When the Australian venture proved unsuccessful, Woolner returned to England in 1854, seeking a commission for a statue of William Charles Wentworth, the father of Australian self-government. Failing this, he continued with busts of distinguished men. In 1857 he completed his Trinity College Tennyson, followed by his bearded Tennyson in 1873. His medallion of Wordsworth (now at Grasmere Church), among others, is credited with restoring the art of medallion portraiture. In 1871 he was named associate of the Royal Academy, where he was made academician in 1874.

WOOLNER, THOMAS
WOOLNER, THOMAS (1825-1892), British sculptor and poet, was born at Hadleigh, Suffolk, on'the i7th of December 1825. When a boy he showed talent for modelling, and when barely thirteen years old was taken as an assistant into the studio of William Behnes, and trained during four years. In December 1842 Woolner was admitted a student in the Royal Academy, and in 1843 exhibited his " Eleanor sucking Poison from the Wound of Prince Edward." In 1844, among the competitive works for decorating the Houses of Parliament was his life-size group of " The Death of Boadicea." In 1846 he had at the Royal Academy a graceful bas-relief of Shelley's " Alastpr." Then came (1847) " Feeding the Hungry," a bas-relief, at the Academy; and at the British Institution a brilliant statuette of “Puck” perched upon a toadstool and with his toe rousing a frog. “Eros and Euphrosyne “ and “The Rainbow “were seen at the Academy in 1848. In 1864 he married Alice Gertrude Waugh, by whom he had two sons and four daughters. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1871, and a full member in 1874. Woolner wrote and pilblished two amended versions of “My Beautiful Lady “ from The Germ, as well as “ Pygmalion” (1881), Silenus “ (1884), “ Tiresias “ (1886), and “ Poems “ (1887) comprising” Nelly Dale” (1886) and” Children.” Having been elected professor of sculpture in the Royal Academy, Woolner began to prepare lectures, but they were never delivered, for he resigned the office in 1879. He died suddenly on the 7th of October 1892, and was buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s, Hendon.

Thomas Woolner RA (1825-1892)
The sculptor Thomas Woolner was born in Suffolk, and came to London in about 1838 where he studied sculpture under William Behnes. In 1842 he joined the RA Schools, and in 1848 he was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . Some six years later he left for Australia to seek a wealthier life, and his Pre-Raphaelite brothers drew a famous collection of portraits of each other to send to him. Woolner proved popular in Australia, making in particular portrait medallions. He was able to return to England in 1857 with an enhanced reputation, and it became de rigeur for intellectuals, poets, scientists and similar thinking people to have their portrait sculptures done by Woolner. Among others, he did Wordsworth, Tennyson (four times, the best in 1873), Macaulay, Browning (twice), Palmerstone, Gladstone (twice), Darwin, Huxley, Sedgewick, Kingsley, Dickens, Carlyle, Coventry and Captain Cook. He combined a Rossetti-like sympathy with a Pre-Raphaelite truth to nature, which at first some found hard to accept: Woolner’s busts of Tennyson and Maurice are what may be called a new style; they purport to represent the actual man, without any smoothing over or idealising. We have no objection to the style - the more realistic the better. But we object to Mr Woolner’s rendering of it... in the Maurice we cannot see the face for the wrinkles... in a similar vein the Tennyson’s hair looks so hard that one might take it for strong nicely curled candlewicks steeped in oil. -
